Either P3FES/Portable or P4 you can't go wrong just avoid Persona 1 Portable and everything will be fine
See, I started with the first one on PSP and couldn't get into it. So, the third and fourth are vastly different?

Persona 3 FES and Persona 4, but get Persona 5 too xD!
Both are wonderfully done games, and it is no surprise from ATLUS.P3 is definitely darker and has more philosophical meanings than Persona 4 but P4 is much more lighthearted and is the first time in the Persona series to actually have a happy ending. <--- Technically not a spoiler.

So get both, and get onto my YouTube channel cause the PERSONA 4 ANIMATION IS COMING OUT SOON!!! YEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!
sounds snazzy, i better start playing one soon

I'll say Persona 3 FES. Played and beat all of them, gotta say 3 was by far the best. For some reason I just couldn't get into 4. Soji never really interested me like Minato.

They're a lot like the Final Fantasy series. Each brings their own quirks to the table. But personally speaking, I generally like 4 more than the others. 3 is next.

This. Avoid this like the PLAGUE!! Trinity Souls is just awful, and completely devalued the series. and the P4 anime is looking ot be just as bad. avoid them!

If your going to get Persona go for 3. I haven't played 4 yet I need to soon, but I would suggest Persona 3 portable for the psp. And if you want to know why becuase the newest versions of persona 1 and Persona 2 IS is on the PSP.

No, at least, not yet.
OP: P4 is fantastic. Persona 3 Portable is also very good. I'd recommend 4. You could wait until next month when Persona 2: Innocent Sin drops for the PSP.

3 is my favourite. I prefer the dungeon mechanics and how it was worked into the game, what with the tiredness, sleeping in class thing and being able to split up your party in the dungeon.
Plus the characters and story were just way better in 3.

That being said the combat system is a little annoying sometimes in 3 as you can't directly control your team mates. Something I *believe* has been changed in the PSP release.

Yes the game play is much cleaner/less rigid, using a modified press turn system.Only the MC has the ability to fuse personas and there are no random encounters. You split time between dungeon crawling and social sim. Most people like to think of P1/2 as one story arc while P3/4 as a separate story arc.

I don't know, I'm playing that right now and it's not too bad; not quite what I was expecting, but not bad. ...except for the random encounters. I HATE random encounters. Well that, and the whole negotiation thing is a *****, but overall it's sill pretty intriguing so far.
I actually really dug the story for P1 but I never liked the combat, always felt too constricting, and the whole negations system is really poor especially since I know the SMT franchise con do better.Plus like you said the random encounters are annoying and plentiful. I could probably stand them more if the battle theme wasn't bad.

Persona 4... It's just all round better imo

Though if you actually do decide to buy both (best choice) start with Persona 3 FES since going from P4 to P3 is like getting slapped in the face by the "everything is slightly worse" fairy

I'm finding it really strange how everyone is referring to the Persona series as being comprised of only two games.
Obviously I know that people must realise that P3 wasn't the first game, it's just odd that people aren't saying "of the only two any of us have played, Persona (3 or 4) is my favourite!" but are instead going more along the lines of, "out of the two Persona games, (3 or 4) is my favourite"

That being said, the first two are VERY different to the second two, and my personal favourite is 3. :)

I would suggest Persona 4 or the PSP version of Persona 3. That way, you won't run into any bad combat design.

Despite what some others have written in this thread, P3 does not have the better story. There are so many bizarre anime tropes jammed into the otherwise realistic setting, and it can't all fit. The ending is a lot stronger and the story is more "whole", yes, but everything else was done better by P4 and with far less nonsense.

Don't get me wrong, P3 is a fantastic game. I even love some of the parts that make no sense (Aigis~), it's just that they somehow got a couple of boring eccentricities mixed in with the interesting ones. This was less of a problem in P4, which very rarely sacrificed its realism. Because the other world and the Velvet Room play by their own rules, we don't expect them or the things that come out of them to behave normally. The only thing that really strains your suspension of disbelief is the "ALL YO' YENS" fox.

I feel this strengthens the supernatural elements of the game. It makes them feel like something grand and unexpected, rather than just being a hassle or a challenge. There's a reason so much weird fiction relies on the main characters being the only people who know the truth or being the only people to witness something horrifying. When it's common knowledge that YOG-SOTHOTH IS THE GATE!!11, it becomes mundane.

But you should still definitely play P3. My criticism does not take away from the fact that the game and its story are fucking awesome. It also has Aigis and Elizabeth. This won't mean anything to you until you play the game, but you'll come to realize that it is a very convincing argument in its favor.

I own a PS3 but don't own a PS2 or PSP, does this mean there is no way for me to play these games at all? I've heard a lot about the series and would very much like to play 3 & 4.

Any idea if either might be coming to the PS3 marketplace or anything like that? Or is my only option to buy a PS2? (Which I can't afford) :<
