With the recent 'My Life as a Tank' post that was made, and the opening of the Warhammer Online Beta, I was thinking to myself; "You know? Mr. Palumbo just might have had a point."

I personally tend to play the Hybrid classes in RPGs, and that reflects my life as well - I'm a jack-of-all-trades. I never like to be tied down to one particular thing; Especially in games.

I tend to lean towards the Melee Capable healers...simply because I like hitting things, but I always feel this pang of guilt when I see injured friends nearby, not being able to really do anything about it. It fits into my 'generous' nature, so to speak. Having an extra "Res" is always handy when the healer goes down, and that extra man standing beside you swinging away at the monster is actually able to help heal the rest of the group while the main healer is focused on the tank.

Not to mention - While the healer is working on the group, they can't always heal themselves, that generates even more threat...so it's always nice to have a hybrid healer that can toss the MH a few hit-points when he's down. It can, and has been, a raid/life/group-saver more times than I'd care to count.

In real life, I'm the first person to go out and buy a friend a new videogame if he can't afford it, just so we can play together. I'm the guy that all of my friends come to talk to when they have problems, or need to relieve stress. I'm 'that guy' in every group of friends that plays the mediator role, and is there when he's needed.

So it's only natural that I tend to stick with my healing classes, though..I can stand up for myself..which is why 99% of the time, you'll find me sitting in the Hybrid off-healer role in any group setting. It's fitting, fun, and that's where I do my best work. Always have, probably always will. Being able to fill multiple roles in a group situation is thrilling for me, and I love when the compliments fly in about how great my healing was, or - "Without ____'s damage, we wouldn't have made it through that one; great job!" Those moments are what keep my going through the grind. And I wouldn't want to do it as anything other than a Hybrid.

But basically, I'm wondering - for those of you that play RPGs, does your typical Archetype/Class selection reflect from your real-life personality? Or is it more of a 'I wish I was _____" a reflection of what you desire to be? Or something completely different than the two of those?

For me, the desire to protect those I care about, and to contribute to the group is a major driving force in my life. Considering this, my "natural" class is the stereotypical Knight/Paladin and usually I end up playing exactly that.

Myself I tend to go for the Mage style class if only that makes the most sense of who I would be in real life,Standing in at under 5'2 I doubt many people would fear me unless I could turn them in to a squirrel.

Also if the game is one of those horrible RPG's where you can not chose to play as a female,Then I tend to just go for the type of man I would love to meet which turns out to be some variant of a barbarian.

I'm definitely the guy with the cool sword and best combat abilities who is in your party for a while and then betrays you.

I am generally the Joat as well, which is one of the reasons I generally don't do so well at pvp when I try my hand at it. I have lots of abilites at my disposal, but I really can't use any of them extremely well, so I suffer for it. When I play Mass Effect, its almost always as one of the hybrid classes, usually the Vangaurd. I like being able to adapt to almost any combat situation, instead of relying on party members to cover something.

I'm gonna pretend that your talking about diablo style games as I don't play many mmos. I usually pick the warrior as he's almost as psykotic as I am, he also just plain looks like me (I'm built like a lumberjack). plus I like things to be dead as quick as possible. Thats why I don't play wow, warriors don't hurt people as much as they should.

I'd have to say cleric. I prefer to assist people than lead them, and my liking of friends is balanced by how arrogant a prick I have a tendency to act like.

I like using Disgaea's Master/Apprentice system to teach healing magic to my tank characters. I call it the "King Tiger Philosophy"-take a nigh-invincible killing machine, and then make it almost completely self-reliant. I also like 'overlapping' the two main types of spellcaster (healer and attacker) by teaching the healing classes to use offensive magic, and by giving them high defense and HP (since they tend to be really easy to kill).

In real life, I'm not really like any RPG type. I'm more like the popular "M16 with scope" from CoD4. I observe the problem from a distance, and deal with it before it becomes a bigger problem (ie, I shoot him before he turns around).

I'm a level 3 College slacker! My special attacks include "angst", "chain smoke", and "drink"!

I think I'd be a diplomat-type class from one of the old Fallout games, but I'd have a charisma of 1. I'm serious. It's really tough going.

Cleric, but not because I am all benevolent. It's because I have an unnatural ability to stay healthy, and am very difficult to hurt.

I also have a thing for maces.

I was never Into anything that was too complicated, but I was also into powerfull attacks and giant glowing swords from hell. Thus, on my character on world of warcraft (obvious choice, but whatever, stfu) I chose an undead rouge, simply because that was the closest thing I could find that I liked, and was the norm for the UDs. That was fun for around 6Lvls. I chose the next best thing, the warrior. Suddenly I could survive 1 on 1s without having to heal in the middle of things, I could kill enemies at least THREE levels over me ON MY OWN. And since I found the way of the warrior, I've never gotten another class past lvl 15.

P.s. I also rarely stray from the undead, mostly because I get to eat my enemies for health, no other action can be performed on a slain adversary that's as effectively humiliating.

P.p.s. Even the teabag

In my (partial) history of MMOS and Tabletops I've played;

The Red Mage
The Tech-Priest
The Cleric
The Paladin
The Bounty Hunter
The Warrior Priest of Sigmar

I've dabbled in the other arts, but I always find that the lack of the ability to perform the skills of another class to be a large grinding halt for me.

For example - I can take a warrior-archetype to about lvl 10-25...but then when I come to a sickening (examplistic) realization, typically due to a recent experience, that I can't heal..I go back to my beloved Hybrid.

Then when I try to play a priest, or ranged DPS, and realize that I can't sustain myself in the fray..I go back to my beloved Hybrid.

Sure, the warriors hit harder, the ranged DPS hit harder, and stay safer, and the healers heal more potently. But I can do it all well. I can fill any needed role within the group (save for the tank - most of the time). And as such, there's always room for me.

PS: While typing, I almost found myself spelling 'room' as 'rume' I don't know why, and I'm rather appalled at myself.

I usually go for summoner, necromancer, beast-lord/hunter type classes. Mainly because I'm too lazy to fight, so I have my minions do it. Or I do something to help my mini-horde if they're weak enough to require my assisting ranged weapon.

I like to dabble in other classes now and then, but sooner or later, I always come back to the heavy-duty meatshield class. I just love being in the thick of it, taking damage and giving it back ten-fold.

For me I usually go for giant direct damage spells and ranger DPS because it so satisfying to see your enemy fall fast and all his friends so try an avoid me for the rest of the battle while im safe and sound behind a tank, and I think Conan said it best when some one asked what he like best in life "To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women."
