Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest has the best soundtrack of all Final Fantasy titles. I say it has the best because every track is Awesome. VI has the Opera which is Awesome and, Kefka's battle theme at the end is also bad ass. VIII has Succession of Witches. IX has some great music too and VII has One Wing Angel. Mystic Quest has...

Not the best Final Fantasy in the series but more worthy of a number than 11, 13 or, 14 for sure. Also, as I said, best soundtrack.

Assassins creed 2/brotherhood (the song they used in the revelations trailer, Iron by wood kid was also epic)

+ Halo

Well already mentioned are Silent Hill 2 and 3, and Morrowind, which are up there for me.

But how has no one mentioned Braid? The music in the demo was a stronger force causing me to buy the game than the gameplay in the demo. It's just brilliant.

GAAAHH!!

You're right, I completely forgot about that soundtrack. For such a small game it had some pretty awesome music, and I was even looking for sheet music for that game....

that's a really tough choice to make, and while it's a very close contest for me, i think i'd have to go with the game that came to mind first: Okami (Shadow of the Colossus, Halo, Banjo-Tooie and the LoZ series are definitely hot contenders, though).

This is the first time I've ever seen someone other than me mention Mystic Quest's good properties. I tip my hat, sir.

OT: I love Nobuo Uematsu's compositions. The man is absolutely brilliant, and he's written some of the most memorable video game music ever.

Shoji Meguro's done some amazing things too, but Uematsu is number one.

Bionic Commando (2009). You just feel like you're in the middle of the action just because of the music. And it has some of the most emotional intro music there is as well.
I was tempted to say Fallout 3 there for a second, just because I'm on a GNR groove right now, but then I realised that they picked good music which isn't in the slightest related to that game, so it's just cheating, really.
Also, a close runner up is Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, but then I'm just a sucker for that whole Western setting, so...

Mass Effect has the Sci-Fi thing down. My favorite personally.
Oh, I know right? There's nothing like cruising through space and letting the opennes suck you in with that orchesteral score blasting from your speakers (we'll let it slide for the time being that you cannot hear sound in space).

Bastion, no question about it.
Normally I'd say that the recentness of the experience is probably clouding your judgement, but since such a fuss has been made about it and they're actually selling the soundtrack seperately on Steam, I think you might be right.

I feel the Blazblue and Guilty Gear series have between them easily the best soundtrack throughout the entire vs fighting genre:

Rockstar pick great music for the soundtracks for their games: the GTA's, (particularly Vice City and 4), LA Noire, and Red Dead Redemption all contain great music.
Oblivion had lots of great atmospheric music, and the soundtrack of any Halo game is always memorable.
As for the best music? Too tough to choose.

ANY Castlevania game.

"Calling From Heaven" from Castlevania Bloodlines, is my favorite (at the moment at least).

Since I often find myself liking metal, I'm going with Iji as having the best soundtrack ever.

Hmm... okay:

BioShock: Best music for one of the best openings ever.

The Terran music from StarCraft 2. Yeah, I know everyone like the original game's music, and it's already been posted here. It was good and all, but the Terran 1 track from SC2 just really rocks my socks.
