Possibly COD4 but I'm not sure. There's hardly room for care and empathy in Super Mario World.

Hm, probably GTA4 (believe it or not.) What an emotional rollercoaster that was.
But maybe Metroid Prime 2, that part where all the marines died/got possessed. That was probably my first instance of gaming morality, having second thoughts after shooting them, and feeling terrible that they got themselves in such a situation.

I remember I always used Tails in Sonic 2 when I was young, but these days I prefer to laugh at his failures when playing as Sonic. I do get angered when Tails ends up killing me (Chemical Plant Zone boss, his hit would make me pass though Robotnik and into the death pit).

The first game was definatly Beneath a steal sky, but doubt you kids will remember that. The most poignant was for sure Mass Effect II taking it from former champion kotor.

King's Quest VI. I totally cared about Prince Alex and Cassima as a little kid. It was also the first game I played that had characters and a real story that you could get into, as opposed to, say, a Quake style game...

The Lion King game for the Sega.
Man, every time Simba kicked it and Rafiki showed up all disheartened and shaking his head... god the pain in my heart.

I still care deeply for a lot of characters, but the only time I remember being genuinely upset was in Professor Layton and the Unwound Future.
When Claire died, oh god man
oh goooooood ;_____;
and then Layton took off his hat and was crying... jeebus cripes I swear I was blabbering like an idiot.
Then I just completely lost it when Luke started baaaawing when saying goodbye.
DAMMIT, I THOUGHT THESE WERE WHIMSICAL PUZZLE GAMES.
WHAT EMOTIONAL INVESTMENT IS THIS?

The Darkness, the characters and storytelling in that game are unreal, the bit where
Jenny dies
is heartbreaking and the ending's even more so.

People will laugh and say I have no taste but... Gears of War.

Yep, I said it. I cried my eyes out when
Maria died.
Maybe it was the astounding voice acting, but I cared for what Dom was going through.

Probably KOTOR, that was the first time I realized games were more than time sinks and actually had good stories and charecters that weren't one dimensional.

Final Fantasy VI, first scene in the World of Ruin. I didn't quite get the point of the fish minigame, so...

Followed immediately by "holy shit...wow!"

I think I've always cared about characters but it probably started with Legend of Zelda, Dragon Warrior, or Final Fantasy. Then I hit a huge chain of JRPGS so I really started caring about about characters and character/story development.

The first monster that died on me in Monster Rancher 2... I cried like a little boy...wait, I WAS a little boy, so that's ok. They even made you go to the funeral and all...very sad.

.hack the orginal four, I was so wrapped up in that game I became almost obsessed with it the story the characters every aspect of it. IN fact I still am and can't wait for Link to get to our shores, even if it sucks.

Hmm...

It must have been Shining Force 2 for the Sega Genesis. But then again, I didn't care enough to get past a particularly difficult puzzle and finish the game. So if not SF2, the definitely Vandal Hearts for the PS1.

Can you tell I love turn-based strategies?

Believe it or not.. James Bond: Golden Eye for N64
I really cared about the characters in that for some strange reason lol and I mean greatly too
the same feeling accrued about actually caring about the characters was in the Brothers In Arms Series..

(until they ruined it with Hell's Highway~!)

Mass Effect, I grew to love everyone, Ashley, Wrex, Garrus, Tali, Kaidan, Liara, Joker.... everyone.
Seriously, I actually felt hurt when I had to sacrifice Kaidan but I had also grown too attatched to Ashley to lose her, and I went crazy making sure Wrex lived as well.
Same with Mass Effect 2, I went insane making sure my whole team lived.

Also, I don't know if this counts but in Halo 2 and 3 I worked like mad to keep all my elites alive in combat.

Probably KOTOR. I loved Bastila and Mission. That started the moment Mission asked Bastila if she ever used the Force to trip someone, just for the heck of it. That was the moment I first though 'holy crap this game is amazing!'.
