Another thing that will make it more tragic to her fans is that she has died at the start of Black History Month. From what my colleagues are telling me she is a huge star amongst the black communities of the US, particulary Black Christians because of her ties with Gospel and Soul singing.

I have a feeling this is going to feature a lot in the news today! (12th)

To be perfectly, brutally honest, she brought this on herself. It's tragic that her life ended up this way, but she was irresponsible and decided to do drugs and drink irresponsibly. Wasn't a fan of her music, but I know many other people who love her music and will definitely be devastated. I just hope they keep in mind that her reckless behavior led to her own death.

Somewhere... A crack dealer is crying himself to sleep tonight. Wondering how hes going to move all these rocks that she wont be using.

RIP Whitney,
You will be sorely missed.

It's a sad truth... Unfortunately a lot of people who could have been great get sucked into situations like this, adn it's bad! But I agree with you, people should be careful in how they choose to treat her as a rolemodel, especially when in front of kids... I still haven't seen anything saying how she died though... Maybe it will be like Brittany Murphy, and 'natural causes'.

I'm going to go so far as to say it's not especially tragic. She liked doing drugs. So when she got rich and famous, she did them a lot. I didn't know her and I doubt anyone else here did either, so who are we judge her life choices? She probably wouldn't have had it any other way, otherwise she'd still be alive.

I've heard of a few of her songs, and I honestly don't feel too bad about her death. I will respect her as a human being and don't feel the need to punish dead people who didn't actually ruin the lives of others. Though, in the upcoming weeks, I will hate her. Because of this:

Meh, I mean that's sad, it's a little sad when anybody dies, especially when they are younger or not that old but she really didn't mean anything to me, so just another day I guess.

I just cant believe she was only 48. She looked so much older and was she like 18 in BodyGuard or was it a much later film than i thought?

No fucking idea who Whitney Houston is but the name is familar in a "thats a famous person right?" kind of way. Just gives me another reason to add to the list on why not to watch tv. Which is a considerably large list by now.

Probably mean another wave of mediocre too soon jokes to put up with. Fuck I hate it when unimportant famous people die and by hate I mean get annoyed at the mild inconvenience.

EDIT: I'm Australian btw.

Whilst it is sucky that a person had died, i will go on the record saying that she did have some talent and was a good singer but she did do some drugs and married a complete whack job in Bobby Brown which in the end is what did her in as unfortunate as that sounds.

I believe people who don't know who she is are probably too young. Her heyday was in the late 80s and early 90s, I was a kid/early teen back then. I'm 30 now.

So if you are born in the 90s, you were probably too young to remember her.

As a Canadian, I've never heard of her before. Though that isn't saying much, I haven't heard of a lot of people. Poll more Canadians before drawing conclusions about the land of Beavers.
I hear the moose are very effective at blocking televisions.

I think you may be right there! I'm very surprised as well that so many haven't heard of her. I mean, she was pretty huge, right!?

Well, "not in the know" teen like me had heard about her back in the day.

That and

Her list of awards includes two Emmy Awards, six Grammy Awards, 30 Billboard Music Awards, 22 American Music Awards, among a total of 415 career awards as of 2010. Houston was also one of the world's best-selling music artists, having sold over 170 million albums, singles and videos worldwide.

I would have to say, yes.

Holy shit. How do you people not know this?
If someone's just not into R&B, gospel or soul, they'll never have heard of someone in that genre, it would seem.

I only know her because My Love Is Your Love sometimes appeared on the radio in those days, and only the song, it's only today I learned she was the artist behind that song. My musical taste like many of my generation started with house and moved on into genres that developed from that. By the time she was making her last songs I was raving about at stuff that had about four times as many beats per minute.
It's not really about R&B or Soul with Whitney. She sold literally a quarter billion albums in the last 30 years or so. That's millions of albums per year, so yeah, I'm a little surprised when people don't know who she is/was.
