Who do you Save?

Seriously, the hell? Not only is that no base for a society, you couldn't breed a new race from them either, you'd get inbreeding by the fourth generation at least

4) An elderly male, famous historian - Probably won't live long anyway. History is important, but there are more important things to worry about.

why the hell is everyone picking the male historian?!?! ye history is important enough and all that, as a matter of fact i study history, but when it comes to building a new society you dont need a historian, all important records and documents would be safe in a vault to rebuild on.

I heard this question the other day in my philosophy class and what at first seemed like a harmless conversation starter slowly became an all out philosophical brawl. I now pose this question to, members of the Escapist, and ask: who do you save?

The question goes as thus: You are a government leader who is aware of an impending nuclear war, and is faced with the decision of who to save. Their is only one fallout bunker capable of escaping the radiation (just go with it), and it only has enough food for 3 months, which is how long the radiation is supposed to last, and 6 people total. Keep in mind that these people that are in this vault may be the last humans and must reinhabit the vacant Earth. You have a list of 10 people to choose from...
1) A male Librarian
2) The Librarian's wife, who is 6 months pregnant
3) An Olympic male Athlete (for arguments sake, of all sports)
4) An elderly male, famous historian
5) A renowned female starlet (dancer, actress, singer, songwriter, etc)
6) A college co-ed
7) A second year medical student
8) A police officer
9) A rabbi
10)A biochemist

So now it is entirely up to you... Who do you save? Only 6 people can survive, meaning 4 people have to die.

Biochemist to recreate SCIENCE, med student for Medical stuff, librarian's wife, police officer, historian.

Screw the college co-ed with the rest of her life, the rabbi, the librarian, and some stupid bloody starlet. The librarian would obviously sacrifice himself for his wife, so he'd be a HERO. The historian would remind us of the past, the police officer would keep the peace, and the med/biochemist would help recreate science and become AWESOME.
Plus the biochemist could clone people.

I went the reverse route. A rabbi was the first to go, because we those, who survive, don't need somebody spouting bullshit about cosmic carrots and sticks. Next - Famous historian, because for all it's worht, he might not make it through the first week once outside in a hostile enviroment and is thus a liability. His skillset pertains to events of large human collectives - something this bunch will not encounter for several centuries. Then we drop the cop for similar reasons - a police force works in societies beyond a certain critical mass. Then i was left with a choice between athlete and starlet. I chose to drop the athlete, because he has the greater chance of extensive gene damage from a life of extensive physical stress.

would the police officer abuse his power as one of the few truly active males? essentially digressing the human race into animals with alpha-males and such. Plus, can the new world truly function without ART or RELIGION, arguably the only true ways to express the true desires of the soul?

2 - Woman and child seems like the most ethical thing to do and I'm good with kids.
4 - A historian would give me someone to talk to. I love history and I love chatting shit about what could have happened, why it didn't and the potential for it to repeat itself.
5 - I don't like celebrities so I would only save them if it was Natalie Portman.
6 - I'm not familiar with the term 'collage co-ed' (being British and and all) so I would save them just to find out more about this mysterious species.
7 - Some medical skill is better than none.
10 - Only because I don't really want to save any of the others and if really forced to choose, I'm sure that a biochemist could come in handy for fire wood and food.

Why I wouldn't save the police officer:
Cops in this country don't have guns (thankfully) and they're all a bunch of power crazy loons who have nothing better to do than pick on people for the crack of it. They have no real power and insist on making undeserving peoples' lives hell and for that reason alone, I would let the fucker die.
