This is tricky...

Let's see, evil with no redeeming qualities or anything resembling pathos or humanity to speak of.

The Emperor from Star Wars
Darth Nhilus from KotoR II
Joker from The Dark Knight(He may be right, but he's a complete monster none the less)
The Comedian from Watchmen(Here despite his occasional hints of humanity)
Micheal Myers from the original Halloween(No reason, no pathos, just pure natural evil)
Light Yagami from Death Note(He may think himself justified, but his delusional insanity comes seemingly out of nowhere)
Judge Turpin from Sweeney Todd(The guy exemplifies perversion and corruption)
A betrayer from Berserk, I won't spoil it... you know the one
Alex from A Clockwork Orange
Mr. Burke from Fallout 3

Any one of them would be an exceptional candidate

Can I ask why SammiYin got a warning for his post?
To be perfectly honest, I (and I'm willing to believe that I'm not the only one) was thinking the same thing. I know that this might seem like trolling because of the backlash that various gods (but mainly the Christian/Judeo-~Christian one) get on this site but the fact remains that god in the Bible is a fucking evil character.
So can I get an answer?
Low content post.

OT: Darth Malak. He destroyed an entire planet with the suspicion that you were on it, even though he expected you to be off it by the time it was destroyed.

Gideon, from Scott Pilgrim. Guy's a dick for the sake of it, and makes other people suffer just so he can be better. He also infected his GF with his own weapon. Not cool.

Wow . . . that's a hard one, plus all the cool obscure ones have already been mentioned. Darn.

I love villians, but picking one specific guy is hard.

Maybe the Emperor from Star Wars. I wanna make a good case for Clu from Tron Legacy considering how he almost destroyed everything he knew just for the sake of curiousity (plus he's Jeff Bridges), also, Master Xenahort from KH: Birth by Sleep should be nominated for the same reason.

(Facepalm) - This is driving me mad, I can't think of anything.

The question is fairly straightforward; Who do you think is the most evil character ever? They don't necessarily have to be a villain, and they can be from any medium (film/t.v.books/comics etc.)

In my personal opinion, Barnes from 'Platoon', Frank Costello from 'The Departed' and General Nikolai Alexandroich Zakharov from 'The Punisher MAX (Man of Stone specifically) are among the most evil characters I've seen to date.
The most evil are the ones who does NOT show it.
Ehe... The Carebears. They're nazies, you know? Oh... and Fluttershy... You saw what happened when her love is not requited.

"You're going to LOVE ME!!!!!!"

Jees.

Gnarl from the Overlord games.

He's clearly the most evil being of all time.

Edit:

List of fairly good quotes from same:

Not sure if I'd call him the MOST evil but the one I hated the most in a game lately is easily Zeus during God of War 3. Anyone who fought him knows what I mean

Captain Vidal from Pan's Labyrinth is the worst I can think of.

[image src="http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg156/KaryFabe/PICSPAM%20VILLAINS/CaptainVidal.jpg"]

Not only did he do horrible things, but he slept like a baby at night because he felt totally justified in his depravity.

If you haven't seen the movie watch it. The movie is so good because despite his evil he is such a compelling and well portrayed character.
"Wanna know how i got these scars?" - i remember this movie.. this guy was a Joker before Dark Night ever existed xD

But yeah Vidal was a real bastard... when i remember the rabbit hunters scene in the middle of the night when he bashes that other guy skull open, before realizing that the man was innocent, and then procceding into go to sleep with no worries...

Did love the ending... "Tell my son... what kind of man i was..." "NO... he will never even know of youre existence *BANG*".... loved it...

The girl was rather stupid tough... she was intructed not to eat anything in that monster house... she procceded in eating everything...

AM from I Have No Mouth But I Must Scream. His sole purpose is to torture the last remaining humans for all of eternity. He's like a robot Satan.

God in the old testament. *crosses fingers hoping not to receive warning*
1 Chronicles 21:9-14
Numbers 31: 17-18
The Great Flood. He did this to kill all the wicked people right? Well I thought he was supposed to be forgiving? Babies are innocent right? Why would he kill them if he was only killing wicked people?
Also, the 10 plagues of Egypt. I think it's Exodus 5:1?9, 7:8?13 though Exodus 11:1?12:36. One of them was to kill the first born of every family.
Edit: There's a lot more.

Actually, the whole concept of a "forgiving, loving God" didn't arise until the New Testament. In the Old Testament, he's a vengeful, spiteful, angry ************ that will kill you in the most painful, humiliating and drawn-out way possible for thinking about maybe putting a toe out of line.

Then Jesus came along and God went "Ohai, you know all that shit you feared for centuries? It's all good now bro."

Well, by definition that would be The Devil, I mean he's showed up in all kinds of media and differant generes, and oftentimes winds up totally one upping guys who thought they were more evil than he is by being in control the whole time.

Now granted, there are various stories that use a differant version of him, and cast him as an anti-hero, or even a straightforward hero. Sometimes this maks God the bad guy, but more often it usually comes down to differing perspectives. A good example of this would be the version from DC's "Sandman" and it's spin offs, where he kind of made a point by just walking away from running Hell, and by way of payback for one upping him on his home turf gave Morpheus the key to Hell and said "here you own, it and get to choose what to do with it, have a nice eternity".

But still, assuming it's not something like that, you just can't one up the evil one himself... and some actors and writers have come up with some outright amazing stuff using him as the villain (of course then again you have some pretty cheezy stuff as well).

Aside from him, hmmm, well, it's hard to say because there are just so many bad guys who ooze pointless malevolence. It should be noted that I don't consider being a sociopath or a willingness to to extreme things for what is perceived to be the greater good to be extremely evil, although they do make good villain motivations in the right forms of fiction.

Really the problem is that in most cases The Devil is really the only villain that can be justified as engaging in malevolence for the sake of malevolence as befits his nature.

Maybe "The Joker" if I have to pick someone. His motivation is pretty much "he's nuts" but in general he has no real goal to his mass murder other than his own sick enjoyment, and so he can get under the skin of this one guy in a bat costume who he's obsessed with. Even in a rogue gallery full of mad men, most of them have some reason, even if warped, behind what they do, The Joker really doesn't.

tough one
kefka if it's just about crazy unpredictability
and Umbridge if it's about making a conscious choice to hurt people.

i really don't know what worse, while one kefka in the right pace spells doom for everyone those guys are usually rather easy to antagonize because, you know they are crazy.
on the other hand the world is full of Umbridges who make sure it stays the shitty place it is, just ask the lady who tries to deny me my tax refund EVERY FUCKING YEAR.

John Ryder in the 1986 version of The Hitcher. Dude's nasty, messing with Halsey for no other reason than just because he can. Sneaks in and lies in the same bed as the lead's gf while they're in a motel. Damn.
