Why ae so many mediocre guitarists being mentioned here? The only ones I can really agree with so far are Downing and tipton. My pics however, would be Jari Maenpaa, Jeff Loomis and John Petrucci.

Thomas. Fucking. Erak.

He's from The Fall of Troy, and he also does most of the singing for the band.

And finally their masterpiece, if you listen to one of these listen to this one, the Phantom on the Horizon EP - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_Hp_Pu7H9o&feature=related

Sorry for all of the videos, but it's my favorite band.

i'll have to say van Halen, he's just the best guitarist i've ever heard, Hendrix at a close second.

Hendrix was a decent guitarist but he ruined most every song he did by opening his mouth.

I dunno who the best is, but right now I'm listening to some Stevie Ray Vaughan and enjoying the hell out of myself

John 5. He's underrated as hell, mainly people who know the bands he's in know him, but not many others. He also improvises 90% of his solos live so yeah... He kicks ass.

Attempting to give an answer (especially a ridiculous one involving people like Tom Delonge or Dave Grohl) would be sacreligious.

Hardest question to answer, ever. Is this both Bass and Electric Guitarists?

Then I'd have to say for sound and unique quality, I'd have to go for Tom Morello, very few can match what he does, because he does it so well.

For style, John Mayer. His "where the light is" show was a surprisingly soulful experience.

For rippage, Angus Young. Why? Angus Young.

Honerable mention goes to the Silversun Pickups.

This is difficult to answer but my all time favourites are Chuck Schuldiner, Alexi laiho, Jari Mäenpää, Jani Liimatainen.

There is no doubt in my mind that Jimi Hendrix was the best guitarist that ever lived.
