Basketball, IMHO, is America's true past time (in my opinion, i don't know the history of BaseB. in the states) and i think it's fine to watch a game of BasketBall because people can genuinely suck at it (I.E. me)
yeah but it was invented by a canadian :)

probly why it won't be the american past time

I agree with all of OP's points, apart from the first two sentances of 5. I'm no historian, but I've heard that back in the day, footballers didn't get payed an awful lot (or maybe even nothing at all), and most of them had to have other jobs to earn a living. I think most sports are crap to watch and play, because although some people claim that "it's not the winning, it's the taking part that counts" (or something to that effect), in reality it's all about proving you're better than other people. I'm not trying to sound senstive or intelligent here, but to me, that seems a bit primative. The only sport I do enjoy playing with my freinds from time to time is Rugby, because taking people out and being taken out is always hilarious (no matter how many bones you break in the process).

I'm not big on sports, but "football" (soccer henceforth) is pretty low on my list. Also it only takes me about seven minutes to have sex-- if you take up 90 minutes you're doing it wrong. It's called being economical-- I've got shit to do... like not play soccer.

I do agree, however, that athletes are paid WAY... WAAAAAY too much fucking money for playing a game.
god, i feel sorry for your girlfriend/boyfriend/right hand/ Real Doll/pet (trying not to discriminate against anyone there.) Seriously.
Sorry because I get the job done quickly and effectively? 90 minutes is an absurd amount of time to spend on one session, unless you can't figure out which hole it goes in. Seriously.

My philosophy-- get in, get out, go play more video games.

something to ponder, which I guess has already been touched upon fueled by the conduct of Rangers fans who swept through my city destroying anything that wasnt nailed down. The CCTV footage was unreal some thing akin to a ROmero film with a surging horde sweeping aside all in its wake on one scene a luckless riot policeman falls and is pounced upon by the fans in the crowd nearly kicking him to death.

So if a horror film comes out and inspires no matter how indirectly a percieved act of violence everyone screams for that film to be banned, football fans can behave like extras in a zombie movie and no one calls for the banning of football.

That and footballers can earn the national debt of Zimbabewe for a years wage!

We as a society have our ideas cockeyed

Every time i played a little football at school i was pretty good, not the best but i did allright. Basically to be average in football you just need to be able to catch the ball sometimes and run.
there talking about football as in soccer

like him though i at first thought this was about football american style until i read the first post

Like many people on here I HATE watching sports on t.v. (except american football)

Unlike most people on here though I LOVE to play sports especialy american football
I'm tall and pretty fast have pretty good hands and can dodge and avoid tackles better than most which makes me good for wide reciever
(if you don't know what that is it is the guy who runs out in a certin direction and gets the ball thrown to him)
(p.s. that last part wasn't ment to be sarcastic)

As for soccer, or if you prefer, football i like to play that to. I have long legs (thats why I can run fast) and long arms so I can reach the ball a lot eaiser than most so I am good at goaly.

one thing I think is funny about football/soccer is Zinedine Zidane headbutting that guy for making a joke about his mom

I prefer watching rugby because of the way the players conduct themselves. Somebody wiser than I am once said

"Rugby is a c**t's game played by g**tlemen, football is a g**tleman's game played by c**ts"

Oh, and to all the Yanks and Aussies crying "That's not football! That's soccer!" I merely quote Ray Charles (aka Dave Lister):

"If god had meant us to use our hands, he wouldn't have called it FOOTball, would he?"

that was very uncool for him to make that comment, it was his last game and he left it in disgrace

not a fan but also not a fan of being disrespectful to other ppl, especially during their last game of a long and great career. same goes for any sport really

I can't stand football either. That said, most sports bore me. One reason is I just can't get into the same mindset as some football fans, always talking about strategy etc. I agree with every point in the original post.
i just hate the lack of dignity in all professional sports. everybody fakes falls and optimizes their perforamnce against the rules in a punitive metagame that undermines the intention of the game.

People like things you don't like. Get over it. You seem to think that someone elses hobby is inferior to your own. So if I want to talk about the football game I can. Don't be so ignorant about something and bash it just because you don't like it. It's quite frankly childish.

I dont care for any sport. You see one game you see them all, and all the good events you miss will just be on the news the next day.

No, I cant stand watching football, it is rather quite boring. As well as sickening to see people getting paid millions to do what everyone else can do. I would rather see no one get paid through contracts, rather, after the game, everyone in the stadium gets to throw out whatever money they want out on to the field, where the remaining players get to battle royale it out for their paychecks.Throw in a few sledge hammers and a pitchfork and just let them go.Bonus points for getting the chainsaw and shotgun down that are suspended from the oposing goal posts.Make it pay-per-veiw or whatever.I would watch it then.

Yes, I love football, whether Im having a kickabout with friends or watching my team Chelsea from the pub or from the West Stand. If you dont like it, thats your choice and your grown up enough to make them.

It is almost indescribable to someone who doesnt understand and is looking in from the outside, there is definitely an emotional attachment amongst the fans and their team. Its something that you could only get after watching your club for x amount of years, the atmosphere that surrounds you during games is electric and should be experienced at least once in your lifetime.

From watching all the banter between both sets of fans, to have a goal scored in the last minute of injury time winning you the game. Even the solemn lonely feeling you get when it went in the other teams favour, it can be one of the most dramatic sports. (a tight game ending 2-1 is usually much better to watch than a 7-0 final scoreline)

oh, i understand it. i used to like sports when i was a child, but the fervoring momentum of the masses is not a complex phenomenon that is difficult to understand.

thousands of people all unified as one, together for a single meaningless cause.

in the defense of football though, i had a discussion about why i hate sports with a serbian college football player. he could see my point but as he explained it, in europe football is like a safe proxy war by which each region demonstrates dominance and a false sense of superiority over the other.

i guess it's a lot cheaper than using the size of your military as a penis measuring contest.
