I think I liked RDR's story a bit better, but that's really all it had going for it.

GTA IV's gameplay was more fun, which is what counts. It had a better physics system, and there was more to do IMO. Not to mention the multiplayer is much better in GTA. I also much preferred the small city area over the large but sparse western wasteland. Also I find driving is hands down far FAR more enjoyable than horseback riding, in which you just hold the button down until you get to your destination.

It's really no contest for me. GTA IV is just more fun to play.

I tried to play GTAIV after hearing all these great things about it, and it's SO BORING. Seriously, I kept forcing myself to do another mission to see if it picked up, but I just got bored with it.

I never got to that point in RDR.

for hating on RDR you get a big lazer shooting middle finger in the eyes. just because it dosent have explosions or fast cars, dosent mean its not fun.
also, if you didnt know already, RDR is soooooooooo much better than GTA IV. dosent mean GTA IV is bad though.

It's servers situations are pretty bad for a good portion of people.

Constantly getting kicked out of server... unable to connect... etc.

I am one of those people.

It also appears to be more or less random.

p.s. RDR is better.
I don't get kicked or anything, but I mostly get connected with Spanish speakers that always have their mics on. And I live in Indiana. What the hell.

Apples and oranges, you can't really compare them except in the essence of being 3rd person, made by R* and gritty.
Otherwise one is a crime drama set in "modern" times, one is a western turn-of-the-century story...
RDR trumps GTA4 tho, for one reason... you never have to hear "Cousin!!!" after the cell phone rings followed by an invitation to some retarded activity you have all of 2 minutes to get to before he gets pissed.

Well John Marston didn't have his cousin sending him telegrams every 5 minutes asking to go out on dinner dates.

Both were excellent, but if forced to pick I would say GTA4. I found myself getting bored a lot travelling between objectives on RDR but not on GTA4, besides that I can't fault either of them.

GTA IV was fun for the occasional romp anda bit of fun, but I thought overall, RDR was a much better, more compelling game.

I think RDR was the better game in just about every aspect honestly. GTA IV was good, don't get me wrong, but the story was pretty boring for the most part honestly, whereas I loved almost every minute of RDR's story. I thought the gameplay was so much more refined in RDR, and while RDR is easier than GTA IV, it was funner to play in my opinion. It's pretty much one of the greatest pieces of Western entertainment, including other Western games, movies, and books. It got the feel and setting of the West perfectly, with some diverse and interesting characters, especially so John. The Multiplayer was, in my opinion, better than GTA IV's. By a long shot actually. This is all without adding in DLC's like Undead Nightmare and Liars and Cheats. Granted, The Lost and the Damned was amazing for GTA IV. But I honestly believe with all my heart that RDR was so much better than GTA IV, though both are great games, RDR still stands as one of my all-time favorites.

EDIT: And, from what I remember of GTA IV (Even the Lost and the Damned mind you), it's missions were just as repetitive as RDR's. I think RDR just isn't the game for you, which is fine, but I still suggest to at least finish it.

I prefer Red Dead Redemption since I wasn't forced to be an ass. GTA forces you into criminal situations without providing any alternative, and I really don't care for that style of game, especially when I'm supposed to take the story seriously (I'm okay with SR3, for example, because it's so extreme that it's entirely implausible). With Red Dead the only morally ambiguous mission was (I felt) when you go to the mine, and even then you can just lasso the miners (Which I did. Yeah, I know).

I can't for the life of me figure out why people think RDR is FUN. I respect all the effort R* put into the game, all the random events, he weather changes, the animations and mini games, but the GAME IS SO BORING. Every mission is travel here by horse have a shootout, mission complete. Then you are stranded in the mission area, and have to travel all the way back to civilization for another round.

GTA IV had much more variety (at least going by memory, I actually somewhat enjoyed my stay in Liberty City) in the missions and the gameplay didn't stay static from hour 1 to hour 15.

I swear the only thing different from the beginning of the game to the point I'm up to now is that I have a sniper rifle. RDR is BORING AS HELL
you are one hard to please guy aint ya

I found the gameplay and the multiplayer (which is pretty much all gameplay) rather repetive and boring after a few hours, but the story in RDR was a hell of a lot better and more engaging than that in GTA IV. GTA IV has a lot more replay value, even in multiplayer, than RDR, even though it also gets boring if you play it too often.

The only criticism I had about that was the throwing knife cheat but they patched it, and that they should have kept the level 1 dead eye part of the level 3 dead eye (able to shoot in slow motion while keeping the dead-eye activated).
There`s a cheat for the different dead eye levels. I`m not sure if you`ve to sign up into the R-social club to get it. If you`re not into collecting achievements or trophies anymore it`s a nice way to play this game. I like dead eye 1 the most too.

I liked John Marston more than Niko.
I liked Liberty City more than The West.
I liked Poker in RDR than the minigames in GTA IV.
Both stories were fine by me.
Both appearances of costumes is eh. Though some costumes in RDR do have function, which I liked.
GTA IV had the radio. RDR had excellent background music.

They just too different for me to compare well.

You're on the wrong side there bud.

GTA IV is a masterful game, only a fool would deny that, but RDR (and in case you didn't know I'm a huge RDR fan) is just perfect. It may not be my favorite game of all time (Skyrim) but I can't deny: its probably the best game I've ever played.

The setting of the Old American West has never been executed as well as in this game, hell the genre (Western) had never been executed in even any sort of fraction that is comparable to how R* accomplished it.

The gunplay is as polished (if not even more) as GTA IV's. Dead-Eye was implemented greatly into the multiplayer. The only criticism I had about that was the throwing knife cheat but they patched it, and that they should have kept the level 1 dead eye part of the level 3 dead eye (able to shoot in slow motion while keeping the dead-eye activated).

The horses are so beautifully drawn and detailed that I outright prefered them to GTA 4's cars, besides cars would have ruined the setting of 1911.

The story of GTA is amazing in how fluid the change of location and character hubs is from one part of the city to the next. In RDR it was a much more sudden change but still done just as fluidly and naturally.

Truly RDR is just indomitable in its genre in every aspect.
That's why I said I respect the game greatly. Its very atmospheric and the attention to detail is amazing. The way enemies react to where they are being shot is a nice touch and all but I find the game very easy and slow paced. 15 hours in, I haven't really been challenged yet, and I found most of the main story missions very repetitive.

GTA IV suffered from the same thing, but I felt that the bustling city was more enjoyaable to play in than a barren landscape, and the weapon variety offered a little bit of a difference when in shootouts.

Plus getting 5 stars and trying to survive is always fun. (I should try it RDR, what happens?)
LOTS of authorities, but more dangerously the constant bounty hunters even after you've escaped from the area

I thought GTA4 was straight up garbage, and RDR was refreshing. Hell if you want a good GTA game play San Andreas or Vice CIty. GTA4 = over-bloated over-hyped piece of crap.

So I guess I'd say RDR>GTA4....I guess?

:p

Basically everything that's already been said, particularly about the similarity of mission formats (being left somewhere after a mission). If thats something that bothers you then it seems mostly a problem with setting. Personally I didn't find it boring, though I am a fan of what few wild west games that there are so I liked the setting of Red Dead. I did also like a lot more things about RDR then GTA IV like the story, characters and minigames and such. Not that GTA was a bad game, but I felt that Red Dead just improved on it.

As far as multiplayer goes I have no idea, didn't do objective matches, only free roam.
