Sonic... I was obsessed as a kid, he was my hero, and despite the recent spout of games, I still a soft spot in my heart for the ole "Blue blur".

Dante from Devil May Cry. Not so much for his character, but because he's fun as Hell to play. And because he's one cool dude. Eh kills Satan and doesn't afraid of anything.

.. Would my choice be a surprise to anyone?

Lightning (Claire Farron) from Final Fantasy XIII.. before she went mushy in the second half.
She was kind of a double sided coin, if you get my jist. Auron and Lightning are tied for me

Ye gods, where do I start?
(spoiler warning)

<spoiler=Final Fantasy IV>
Kain
Kicks seven shades of arse, but is resigned to always being overshadowed by Cecil - especially in Rosa's eyes. Poor guy.

<spoiler=Final Fantasy V>
Gilgamesh
The only antagonist with any decency (and with no ill will toward the heroes) - gets banished to the Void after failing one too many times. Redeems himself in a rather awesome way when Necrophobe rears his ugly head. Also, <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtdQl6WuFeI>this is his theme tune.
Galuf
Just watch that solo fight against Exdeath.

<spoiler=Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII>
Zack
Such a nice guy, and really gets put through the metaphorical grinder over the course of the story. Even so, save for a rather understandable breakdown after Angeal's death, he keeps going.
Sephiroth
Actually a decent, caring sort before all that Jenova business. He has Zack take his place on a couple of his occasions (and even plans to leave SOLDIER) because he just can't bear to have to hunt his friends down.

<spoiler=Final Fantasy IX>
Zidane
The only member of the party without any real reason not to turn his back on the whole thing, but he sticks around anyway - he's just in it because he genuinely wants to help. He keeps the team strong and unified, which doesn't half pay off after Garland tries to tear his soul out.

<spoiler=Mass Effect>
Shepard
I don't really need to justify this one, do I?
Garrus
Even if he's not necessarily going about it in the best way, he's devoted to doing the right thing. Great sense of humour too, and falls apart quite hilariously if LadyShepard romances him in the sequel.
Tali
Like Zidane above, she's more along for the ride than anything else in the first game - completing her pilgrimage is just an extra bonus. And, seriously, who among you didn't give the poor girl a hug during her loyalty mission?
Wrex
He's a krogan with both a brain and a sense of humour. What's not to like?
Not to mention just how happy he is to see you in the sequel, assuming you spared him.
Mordin
Hilarious. Sings Gilbert and Sullivan. End of.
Joker
Lives up to his name, to say the least - and he does give a toss about his crewmates. Really well fleshed out in the sequel.
Thane
He's been through a lot of crap, and he's terminally ill on top of that. He just wants to do something good before he dies. *sniff*

Who holds my heart? I do. In a tight, cold grip. I'm literally squeezing it so hard it feels like it will burst...

Oh, you don't mean literally? Oh, okay then. Probably April Ryan, for being one of the few realistic and down-to-earth strong female game characters around :). The fact she's pretty damn hot in concept art doesn't hurt, either...
The Longest Journey? Never played it nor heard of it. any good?
Wait, you've never heard of the game yet you managed to correctly guess the game when I made no indication of what it was? You either used Google, or are psychic. Either way, smart guy :).

Anyway, yes, it is really good, if you're into point-and-click adventure games. Very artistic, too. Only gripe I have is that some of the puzzles are pretty damn obscure, but if you have access to the internet (which you obviously do) then walkthroughs will be quite a boon for you...
I searched the character name and the game popped up, Lol oh lovely internet! But if you want and for kicks, Lets just say i new the game just by looking at aprils name XD.

Rather, I'm an avid fan of the myst series, anything relevant to that? (well i mean in more then the point and click esque theme)
Hmmmm, not really, though if it's any help I quite like the Myst series too, and I loved The Longest Journey. Definitely worth a look, though the style and atmosphere are definitely somewhat different to the Myst games...
