The Black Whirlwind, Mad Kang or HK-47 for me; those characters were so awesome, I have to give them kudos as potentially awesome mascots.

Funny enough, all 3 characters come from Bioware games. Coincidence?

I'd say any helicopter pilot from the Resi Evil series. Apart from Brad. He deserved to be mutilated horribly.

Not sure if he counts as a mascot in-game, but he'd be a great one to have.

Boo, the only miniature giant space hamster in the Realms!

I still think Earthworm Jim came and went too quickly back in the day. Shiny games tended to be funnier than just about anything else, and Jim would've made a good mascot/spokes-thing.

^ This guy. John Vattic from Second Sight. I love that game, and the story is amazing (even though a bit cliched at points). Plus, the fact that Vattic is a super-powerful psychic, good with a gun (especially snipers, snipers FTW :D), and funny to boot, the guy is awesome. He can be a complete badass when he needs to be, and the rest of the time he's a nerd. It's awesome.
John Vattic is a phenomenal character, I freaking LOVED second sight.

Slightly obscure, slightly unliked, and slightly alternative (to the major mascots)? I can only think of one character:

She's quite possibly Nintendo's greatest character in several years. Yeah, she's annoying when you first meet her; even I wanted to strangle her. But how she changes as TP progresses is one of the most beautiful things in gaming. That, and her personality screams "mascot."

If we're talking about characters who appear in more than one game, then I'd have to go with Travis Touchdown.

I picked Travis mainly because he's really obscure, and not an ordinary video game character. He's a nerd, and he's proud of it. That, and he could be a decent representative for gaming, if he weren't so bloodthirsty and arrogant.
what game uther than no more heroes does he appear in?

Minsc and Boo! [http://www.minscandboo.com/index.php]

How can you not like a half-crazed but oh so lovable and rightgeous Barbarian Ranger with his Giant Minature Space Hamster companion, whom imprint their boots of justice into the swollen and unsightlky backside of Evil, anywhere it'd hides!?!!
Seconded.
"Evil around every corner. Make sure not to step in any."

Alternate Mascots for a few big companies:

Nintendo: Cranky Kong
Capcom: Barry (from Resident Evil)
Square-Enix: Rabbites

I don't think they're exactly mascot material... but I'd say Benjamin and Anthony Carmine from the Gears of War series.

They're like gamers that actually have the chance to be in the game, and perform about as well as I imagine the average gamer would in such a situation.
I couldn't of chosen better people. It makes me sad to think what happens to the average character in video games... poor Carmines...

I want SimEarth!! It takes Spore outside and beats it to a pulp with its crappy graphics that seem to blend everything into one. Yeah it's that great.
