I like characters who are actually proper characters like John Marston, and Ezio Auditore, instead of the usual silent protagonist. Don't get me wrong, I do like Half Life and other games with silent protagonists (except Modern Warfare 2) just I prefer characters that show more emotion than a brick.

Jimmy Hopkins from Bully. Me and him are like fucking twins its not even funny. I love that game! Played it for ever system and I cant believe Im saying this but the Wii had the best version. *Face Palm*

I'm disappointed in like half these answers. What about the Ye Olde heroes of lore! (i mean like NES, SNES, sega genesis, etc)
Oh and Magnus Gallant from Ogre Battle 64 is probably one of them. Probably one of the worse characters during the beginning the game, but ending up to be the 5th best. And i think that he is a hero that actually wants to do what he is doing. Unlike the John McClane syndrome most other heroes have. (Wrong place in wrong time [Har Gordon Freeman], ending up leading the rebellion or some shit)
If you want a silent protagonist from me, BOWIE from Shining Force 2. Only says 6 words the entire game, and only has his face pop up on a chat bubble 7 times (those 6 words are in 1 sentence.) One of the few characters that actually gets ?? attack with a level 20 promotion

-Phoenix Wright, from the Ace Attorney series. A heroic underdog that firmly believes in justice and truth. He is also secretely snarky and has hilarious facial expressions.
-Cate Archer, from No One Lives for Ever. A strong, smart and independant female lead that has personnality.

Yeah, John Marston was an epic protagonist and if real, he would be the manliest man in the history of manhood. Bulletraping Edgar Ross was awesome too. I also shot his corpse about 900 times with all my weapons. Did you know that if you shoot him in the direction of the water enough times he actually gets swept out to sea?
