For me, it's hard to choose, beacuse my physique (overweight, but still not that fat by appearance) makes me preety incompatible with most fictional characters (especially from anime). That said, there are a few potential choices which would be quite fitting for me.
If I really had to go with an actual character (most cosplayers do), I would probably go as Hercule Poirot. My physique is compatible, I could grow a thick enough moustache to trim it to an appropriate size and the "unlimited" funds would allow me to have a costume made that was an exact match. The only issue I would have is that my head is kind of big:
If I was allowed to potray a creature rather then a person, then I think I would make a good Moonkin. I have some rather appropriate accessories here at home and I think the rest of the materials would be fairly easy to get as well. Plus, I could always use some sort of recorder to play the voices:
However, if I was really ambitious and I was allowed to potray any entity, regardless if it's sentient or not, then a true-to-life VOTOMS Armored Trooper costume would be awesome. Since it's only 4 meters tall (compared to mecha from other shows, which are usually in sizes of 30+ meters with the exceptions of
Megazone 23), it is arguably the most realistic mecha to potray. Plus, it would be really awesome to be able to stand above all others. That said, it would have to be some sort of outdoors convention, beacuse I seriously doubt such a thing would fit through doorways:
