Which Myst game is the best, after the original? I played part of the original until I lost it and didn't get to finish. If I wanted to pick it up again, which one should I get?
In my opinion? Riven (Myst II) was the best. But a lot of people would probably put Myst III: Exile as being better than Riven.

In any case, it's all a continuous story, so you might just wanna take the next logical step.

Thanks! I'll just pick up where I left off!

I rented the originall MYST when I was like 9 years old. I couldnt figure out a damn thing. I recently got RealMYST the remake of MYST and playd from beginning to end in about 2 days(with only a little help from strategy guides). I havent playd any of the other MYST games but I certainly intend to. It has become my favourite game of all time. I have even just recently picked up the first of the three books.

I never played the sequels, but I'll never forget some of the locations and the wonderful music in that game. Man - I forgot about the endings too! Crazy stuff. I think the reason I never played the sequel is because I moved on from that type of game to others I enjoyed more.

I don't remember the puzzles in Myst being all that complex. Or even hard.
The only one that really stumped me was the tram ride in the dark, listening for the different sounds and knowing which direction to turn. I had to ask a friend about that one. The puzzles were complex enough that it gave me a nice sense of accomplishment for figuring them out; but it was also my first "point-and-click" game like that, so...

Depends what you want:
Myst = Surreality
Riven = Tougher puzzles
Exile = Stylized events
Revelations = Gorgeous graphics

Haven't played Myst V, can't find it. I want to play it though.
My personal favorite was actually Uru, mostly because I like genre hybrids, and also because I can play as myself (it also nicely ties Earth, "The Cleft" and the Star Fissure together quite nicely).

Now that I think of it, why why does no one like Uru? Again, it was my favorite, and I dabbled in the MMO for a while (the most rebooted MMO of all time, I think, I'll join when it reboots AGAIN). It seems that it's almost fashionable to shun the little hybrid that pushed fantasy into a realistic setting, but that's what I LIKED about it.

I liked Uru, too. Especially Gahreesan. (Spell that right?) That place is very possibly my favourite of all the ages, second perhaps to Riven. Crazy stuff.

Uru just kind of interrupted the stream by having a 3PS interface, is all. People don't like change. I didn't mind it so much. It prepared me for a world of FPSs/3PSs. Uru is, however, kind of necessary to the story if someone intends to play Myst V. Myst V picks up at almost the exact moment Uru ends.

I never got the Uru expansion but I heard it was rubbish.

Myst was great, never could beat any of the games but the first though. Spent a lot of time on the 4th and got stuck, I've been meaning to go back though.

I remember watching my Dad play Myst. I had tried playing it a couple of times, but couldn't figure out what had to be done and couldn't be bothered to read all of the in-game books that hinted at what to do. I basically got to the second (or even third!?) island through memory alone of watching my Dad play it.

It's weird because I have a positively atrocious memory but when it comes to games and random trivia(or otherwise) then my recollection is amazing. To the point where I often install old puzzle/adventure games from the early-mid 90's and can run through the game in an afternoon with only minor moments of memory lapse as to what to do.

The aptly named Mechanical Age. Probably the second-hardest one, after Selenetic. No one liked that Age...well, no one who is tone deaf anyway.

I loved playing the original Myst. The only puzzles that I didn't like were the sound ones, mainly because I am tone deaf and could never get it right.

I remember Myst from way back. I was only 12 when I first played it (my Dad was into the series). It was an awesome puzzle/ logic game. Riven was a great game too, lots of interesting puzzles as well as a good story. I didn't really get into Exile though, I found it too hard and even now I can't be screwed going back to it. I don't see the point of using a strategy guide either because that defeats the point of the game.

Who remembers 7th Guest? That was an amazing game along the lines of Myst.

Phantasmagoria was pretty sweet too, although that was more like King's Quest meets the horror genre, but still great fun.
Oh, I LOVED 7th guest back in the day almost as much as Myst. Unfortunately, I went back and played 7th Guest again recently and was severly disappointed in everything. Myst did puzzles so much better and was so much more immersive, and stands up much better than 7th guest. But I've got so many good memories about it (except for the Globule game aggh die!)

I just read in Wikipedia that 7th Guest was one of the first computer games put onto a CD-ROM. Thought I'd pass that little tidbit on. Always nice to have a little useless trivia under your hat.

But anyway, I haven't played 7th Guest in well over a decade, so I can't even remember a single puzzle anymore, just that I generally had fun with the game. From the way you word it, I might be better off not revisiting the game and instead keeping it as a fond memory.

I remember getting headaches from reading too much into the puzzles. Eventually looked up some of the solutions. The final solution irked me a bit. I miss Zork.

EDIT: the later Zork, not the text adventure game ones.
