There's just something about the experience of the physical store. I know it's probably far from the case for others, but I enjoy going to my local game shop as a regular. Chat with the workers, swap stories, and get some recommendations while you're at it. Hell, I estimate about 1/4 of my collection wouldn't have gotten a look in, without some suggestion.

Very tricky to do that online.

I brought the new Zelda game from eBay for halve retail price $43 as apposed to $99. This makes me wonder, why did I even look in eb games first and does anyone else buy games over other internet shops.
You're obviously Australian (or nearby) like me if your prcing is anything to go by.
As such I suggest you check catalogues more often. $99 is like the recommended retail price, but Kmart, Big W and JB Hi-Fi all generally have specials which knock the price down by at least $10-$20. EB, Gametraders and Game, as well as anywhere else selling the game will generally match those prices.

Now I realise that still doesn't compare to your $43 (which I'll admit I'm a tad dubious about but I'll take your word for it). But when you factor in the time and cost involved with shipping, as well as the possibility of lost/damaged parcels, its can be easier to buy it in store.

Not to say there's anything wrong with buying through eBay its just not for everyone.

For the record I didn't even buy mine at the reduced price, I paid full price and a bit more for the version with the golden Zelda themed Wii-Mote.

I've bought games from Amazon but never from eBay. I don't really understand paypal to be honest and it seems like most sellers only take paypal. I've got some great deals on Amazon but I know there are a ton of excellently priced lots on eBay. At some point in the future, when I'm more familiar with paypal, I'll start shopping eBay more. Also, I don't shop gamestop because of a local play-n-trade. Better than gamestop and they repair stuff! eBay can't offer repairs and there's no human contact, two setbacks to online retail.
This for me.

I'm not too familiar with paypal, and ebay has always seemed dodgy to me, so I always buy my games from Amazon.

It's the same for me, I'm not exactly a regular cause I'm happy just having a few new games a year and then just filling up on amazon's under £5 section (surprisingly good) but I like being able to browse. On Ebay you go there with an idea of a game you want in mind and you either leave with it or don't, at a real store you can go in, see that the game's a bit overpriced or whatever and look around for other stuff to buy.

I always go with in store purchase. For one thing eBay doesn't give you pre-order rewards and the ones from ebay can be hacked knock offs.

Fuck Ebay, Steam sales are where it's at!
Except for people like me who actually like to own a game. Digital distribution is fast, neat and efficient, but the trade-off is possibly losing everything if the service you use isn't around a decade later. Or worse, if they turn your account off because someone used a swearword at you on their message boards.
Check the EULA's for some of your software, you don't own those, either. ;)

Although, I see where your coming from, and I understand that fear, but the success of Steam ensures that I have full access to my games for quite some time unless I cheat on multi-player servers. I have no interest in that, so I'm good and secure for some time yet.

Most shops here are easier than ebay as the postal service is not awesome when it comes to anything that won't fix in the tiny mailbox and I live in the centre of town, and still don't trust alot of the super cheap sellers

People who live in countries that don't allow for eBay-import, countries where eBay doesn't deliver to or simply countries where the transportation costs are to high to make it practical.

Yeah, in a 'fine-print' context you are correct, however while I don't own all my software legally, I still own it in actuality. This means I can do whatever I want with it, including play it regardless of my own actions or the actions of others. I can play it when the company has gone under or no longer supports it. Hell, I can play it in a bomb shelter while the world is being bombarded with radiation from nuclear war. All because I actually have it in my hand, and save for having it stolen from me, no one can say what I do with it. That level of freedom is worth more money then the game itself.

I go into a physical store when I can. Occasionally, the price of a game will be radically cheaper on Amazon than in GameStop, so I'll buy it there, but usually they're close enough in price that I just go to GameStop. That way, I don't have to worry about shipping, and get some benefits from the rewards program. And there's just something about going into a store that's quite nice. Alas, my hometown GameStop shut down recently... everyone there knew me, and we'd have some lovely conversations from time to time. Now I'm stuck with my college GameStops... one of which I actively avoid due to one of the workers leering at me constantly.

People still buy physical copies?
Yeah, some of us apparently like to pay for a physical copy, not just some vague right to play a game, through a service that can very easily go down the drain one day.

OT: I buy all my new games at a local retail store, with fair (same or cheaper than Steam) prices, good selection and frequent preorder bonuses. Case in point: Witcher 2. Bought it like a week after release for an equivalent of 39 EUR, while Steam wanted 49,99 EUR for it. Steam's good for an occasional sale of an older title I missed for one reason or another, but there is simply no logical reason for me to buy new games there.

I don't trust Ebay enough to buy games there.

You say that like I don't have that.

All it takes is a small amount of know-how, and the proper habits when it comes to securing your PC. If I were to lose internet access, I'd still be fine. Again, I understand where your coming from, but it's not so black and white, more like a couple shades of gray with white at the end. There is no "pitch black" like you perceive.

Aside, I'd probably be surviving a nuclear fallout, not playing Counter-Strike. :D
