I just can't honestly say that I'd like to see Johnny Depp as the riddler but then again I may be wrong...there is definitely a chance that he can make it amazing and quite possibly steal the spotlight from other main roles -- as there is with any actor. If he did end up cast, I don't see it as the end of the world, I think Johnny can do it well, just not best.

Much as I would hate to see Riddler in the new movie (too goofy, same thing with The Penguin), if I had to choose somebody to play him I would pick....

John Cleese. Think about it and try to make your brain NOT explode.

i think riddler should be held back till they do bane then use him as the second string villain coz riddler on venom was a far scarier riddler than the usual kind.
as for actor im not that fussed coz so far theyve picked the right guys for the roles.

Hey Carey's Riddler was entertaining. In that particular train wreck of a movie a canonical Riddle would have been a little out of place, don't you think?

But as for a Riddler in a GOOD movie... we need some one who can present hubris, genius, anger but also a sort've "fun" when it comes to the puzzles themselves. I'm going to go with either Neil Patrick Harris (So I watched Dr. Horrible recently, shoot me) or maybe Sean William Scott. I figure both of those guys are dying for a serious role, they both talk quickly but clearly for the riddles themselves, both have a lot of acting experience and both could dye their hair the necessary orange.
I think what really killed that movie was the Two-Face that was scared by Peptmo Bismol. Everything else was just digging the grave.

While I do think that Carey CAN play a good Riddler, Batman Forever was already poorly cast enough along with sub-par dialog, so that not even Carey's best efforts could do anything to save the movie.

If they cast him again, I wouldn't mind at all(he CAN do drama, watch Eternal Sunshine on the Spotless Mind), but I'm sure someone different will be used.

If I were to vote, I'm agreeing with the guys who've said either Edward Norton or Jack Black. I think they would do great as well.

Carey could and would cut the brightness and bring that darker edge to the non-Burton movies.
My sarcasm detector is broken. Are you serious when you say that Carey brought a DARKER EDGE to the movies? He was a fucking christmas light.
Read what I wrote dude, I said he COULD. Yeah he played a colourful Riddler in Forever, I remember an interview with him saying that he would have liked to explore the darker side of the character instead of falling into his typecast faces/noises role. Sadly it was a PG/13 or something.

To be honest, I'm sick of playing this game with people setting up their fantasy 7th Batman film cast. It has been SEVEN films regardless of director, let it go already. They should have stopped at Batman Forever, not the best of the bunch but the 1st three got the general story across and didn't need anything after. NOT EVEN THE DARK KNIGHT.

Sorry, the milk-machine 5000 has been working overtime and you can't pretend it hasn't just because you like Batman or because they've changed to the name of the films.

That's my vote, stop this madness!

Then uhhh....Don't post? I don't know how old or devoted a fan you are, but I'm young and never had the opportunity to really talk about most of the movies. This is the first batman series to come out during a time when I could understand what was happening. Its important to me because of that. If your sick of it because you've seen this several times regarding the previous batman movies, then don't post. It doesn't give you the right to ruin it for everyone else because you have a different opinion.

In my opinion, (and yes, its only my opinion) Carey just can't bring the correct kind of dark insanity necessary for the role. I've seen him play serious characters, insane characters, and seriously insane characters and I can't say that I see him playing a dark riddler.

What about Brad Pitt? Seriously. He can do comedy, he can do crazy, I'm not so sure he can be serious enough when needed, but I'd still think him better than some options.
Meet Joe Black put Pitt in an awesome light in my book. That exact mix of playfulness and deadly seriousness but this time coated in madness instead of estrangement should be a fine Riddler.

But I don't know how well his face fits the riddler. He usually looks too stone-faced.

How about David Hyde Pierce, Dwight Schultz or Rainn Wilson?

They all seem to me to be able to pull off a twisted genius character, especially Murdoch!

I gotta say Hugh Laurie, Edward Norton, Neil Patrick Harris (yeah i think he could do this role pretty well, stop typecasting) and Johnny Depp (i mean why is everyone saying he wouldnt fit, he can do crazy and back before dark knight if someone had said Ledger was gonna play the joker i would have said he couldnt do it but i was proven wrong so why not again?)

First let me start by saying, if the riddler shows up in a nolan movie, I expect (hopefully) he'll undergo a "change" to a more realistic character, much like the Joker, Harvey Dent, Raz'a Gul (sp?) and even Batman himself did (and the result of that was amazing might I add).

That said, the new riddler would definitely be psychotic and obsessive compulsive, maybe even bordering the autistic (or asperger's syndome) with a very large IQ. He would lack self-confidence at heart, while, however, displaying a very confident and calm "cover".

We also have to factor in the performance of Ledger and Aaron Eckhart as Joker and Two-Faced (respectively) were nothing short of epic, you'd need actors to live up to their "legacy".

Such, I think the actors to best suit this character would be:

- Johny Depp - Because the man's a chameleon. Like, really... Go watch Pirates of the Caribbean, then watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Sweetney Todd. Seriously, he can pull almost anything off.
- Hugh Laurie - Classic actor. Seeing him do Dr. House, then watching him as Captain James Biggs is quite surprising. He can convey emotions and he can convey mixed feelings.
- Timothy Olyphant - His performance in Die Hard 4 and in Hitman sold him for me. If someone can play a cold-hearted psychopath or an almost autistic-like persona full of mixed feelings, that's Olyphant.

Longshot: Keanu Reaves - I know. "WHAT THE FUCK? THE ONE-ROLE-MAN?". Well, truth is, Keanu has gotten better at his "ability to excel at one role but suck at everything else". I was pleasantly surprised with his performance in both Constantine and Street Kings. With Nolan's guidance, I seriously think he could pull it off, his innate "...what?" look could actually benefit his character.

You will all call me an idiot probably, but I honestly feel like Jack Black could drop the weight like he did in Envy (he can get skinny) and take the role seriously enough to make a great Riddler.

Before you bash me, imagine JB in a role where he ISN'T playing his typecast character, but instead is just an outer shell for an insane personality like the Riddler. He's got the face for sure.
You're an idiot.

Simon Pegg (Shawn of the Dead) maybe? He can do crazy and he can do intense, and I'm pretty sure he can carry off smart... I haven't seen him do a really dramatic part, or do creepy, yet.

So if you went and watched the first 4 Batman films (5 if you count the Adam West TV series movie), you're telling me you wouldn't understand it because of your age. Seriously?

I've obviously misread the generation below me (I'm 24 btw and enjoyed Batman since I was a kid from the camp Adam West TV series, up until the Mr. Freeze film) and thought you'd be able to at least watch a film or two from a decade ago without having to have it mushed up with some 2008 cgi and spoon-fed to you because your eyes and brain couldn't possibly process that non-HD look.

If your sick of it because you've seen this several times regarding the previous batman movies, then don't post. It doesn't give you the right to ruin it for everyone else because you have a different opinion.
Actually, as an old fan of the franchise, it does give me the right. Don't spit out your dummy because I didn't agree with you. This is a discussion, not a "friends forever follow me if you agree" thread. I hardly think I've just spoiled anyone's Batman 2008 experience whilst stating my opinion on the matter.

I still vouch that Carey could pull it off but, shave the tasche off of Jason Lee's face and he'd play the shit out of The Riddler. Happy now young 'un?
