Johnny Depp is always a good choice (the man's a genius), but I latched onto that rumor a while back that they were trying to get David Tennant to do it.

Now THAT would have been awesome.
Agreed. Sorry for these one word posts, but you really just summarized the two points I wanted to express. ^^;

They're already trying to bring Johnny Depp in to play him. I think that's a perfect idea.
And apparently Phillip Seymour Hoffman might play the penguin XD

Goddamnit Hollywood. What is up with you and Johnny Depp? I actually like a couple Johnny Depp Movies, there's nothing wrong with the guy as an actor but stop trying to Shoe-horn himin every time you have a character who isn't completely sane! Other actors are capable of showing emotional imbalance you idiots!

So he looks good in eye shadow! Fine! So his eyes bulge from his head a bit, fine! Maybe he's equipped to play 80% of over the top crazy people movies.

Mark my words though, he is wrong for the Riddler. He'll screw it up. Riddler is a character that genuinely delights in playing games with the people catching him, he's a character grounded in arrogance. Believe me, that's different than playing homicidal maniac. It's also different from playing a pirate full of bravado. I realize Depp as other roles and taken to them well but I just can't see him here.
I sense you don't want Johnny Depp to play the Riddler.
I think he could do fine. I'm sure there were people pessimistic about Ledger when he was going into the role of the Joker.

I think Edward Norton would be able to do it (I just saw Primal Fear, for some reason that was the first thing that sprung to mind).

Jim Carrey. Hands down.

If he's in a darker Batman milking film then he'd play a darker version of the character.

Well, all I ask is that Jim Carey (sp?) not be brought back to do this Riddler.
i thought some of what he did in batman forever was pretty good, but i kinda agree with AVGN: it was more like ace ventura than the riddler, just acting goofy more than really creating a character.

buuuuuuuuuuuut, it was batman forever. not good, not bad, just ... not good. it wasn't just carrey, it was everything about that movie; it was like they took the 2nd-lamest issue of batman and put it into film form, frame by frame. that's a good song, too, frame by frame by king crimson. --oh, yeah, topic at hand ...

tom cruise as tom cruise. that man is already an e(dward)nygma, so he'd be perfect for the role. ... i really don't have a suggestion.

and the all-time lamest issue of batman? that became batman & robin

Hugh Laurie would do well, but i feel like he'd just be house with a costume...
you've obviously never heard of Blackadder, several short-running comedy serieses that ran in britain in the 1980's with rowan atkinson (aka mr bean) playing the short-tempered, always-getting-scrooged lead character, and hugh laurie playing his moronic accomplice, george. hugh is a very talented actor, and one of the best comedy actors of all time. house proved to me that he can take on a more serious role, and the riddler's touch of lunacy mixed with hugh's skill could create something amazing.

if you've never seen any of the blackadder series, i highly suggest you do. blackadder II (set around 1100 AD, i think) was great, but my personal favourite was blackadder goes forth (set during ww1)

How about David Hyde Pierce, Dwight Schultz or Rainn Wilson?

They all seem to me to be able to pull off a twisted genius character, especially Murdoch!
lol, david hyde pierce ... once you get past the whole niles crane image, he could play one creepy ************, and not just some whipped mama's boy

I'm still not entirely convinced that The Riddler is where they should be going with the next batman film. I'm still kind of annoyed that my favorite batman villain, The Scarecrow, has been turned into a second rate thug, particularly in the brief "cameo" in the Dark Knight.

-Guy Pearce- This guy was in Nolan's Memento, and the only other memorable thing he's done is Priscilla. I think it's time this guy proves his stuff again.

But, in keeping with the dark theme of the recent Batman movies (and the comics in general), I'd like to see a revamp of Firefly with Giovanni Ribisi taking a stap at it.
(note I left some bits out of the above for relevance)

Hi everyone. Big Riddler fan here, random search came across this thread. Read it with interest. The above is what finally made me want to register and comment (interesting looking magazine anyway).

1. I think in different arcs of the comcis Scarecrows been treated far worse than he was in begins/DK- Joker curbstomping him in knightfall, the whole `scarebeast' fiasco, his part in Hush... I think he came across as a creepy, capable pyscho in begins, and as a pragmatic `do what I can in the current climate to contin8e my experiments' kind of guy, not a thug, in DK.

Ribisi would nail a properly done Firefly.

However, the thing that really jarred for me...

Guy Pearce's onyl two memorable movies being Memento and Pricilla? What now? What about LA Confidential, Two Brother, and The Proposition? Sure he's made lots of less than stella movies too, but the problems were seldom due to him, and more about the rest of the flick.

But I digress, I don't like him for the Riddler! But he's be a better fit than many other sugestions Ive seen round the net. (would definetly prefer him to johny depp).

Id be a Tennant man myself (he's brilliant), except that Id actually like to see Nolan cast an american... couple of suggestions here are good. I really hope we get to see a decent, Justice/Dark Knight Dark City/Riddle Me That, kind of Riddler on the big creen for once. (as much as alove Gorshin, his performance/role in the old batman novie wasnt as strong as some of his generally menacing, especially for a campy show, turns in ther original program. Seriously; rewatch some of those episodes and he's the only villain that comes across as a genuine threat; while still ebing funny.)

No, no, Johnny Depp. Fantastic actor, but no.

Edward Norton

Carey Elwes

I could also see the guy who played the father of the main character in the movie Wanted doing it as well. Don't know either of their names.
