Who would make the best Riddler?

The obvious choice would be Steve Buscemi. To be fair though I would cast Buscemi as every Batman villian (including Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn(in the same movie so Buscemi can go lesbian with himself, maybe there's something wrong with me))

I'm liking alot of the ideas so far...I'm truly hoping that Johnny Depp is not the riddler, he is crazy yes, but does not have the deep settled arrogance and intelligence that the Riddler has. It would be a hard role for him but I think if they did choose him, he would have a shot in hell of doing it very well. If he did do well, he has the potential to make the movie amazing, but as I've said, his acting style does not suit the Riddler.

Neil Patrick Harris was also a great suggestion but I don't think I've ever seen him portray a highly intellectual person very well. I think he could pull off a more subtle insanity mixed with extreme arrogance, but I wonder whether or not he could really pull off the kind of intellect the Riddler has.

As for Jim Carey, NO. He's just not serious enough, he does not portray the correct personality to play the Riddler in a dark batman movie.

My favorite so far still has to be Hugh Laurie, though I havent seen anyone else back it yet.

NPH is god.
But you're kinda right, I've never seen him play a sinister character, he always plays someone loveably awesome, but not genuinely evil. But maybe he could do it.
Johnny Depp, however, could nail this role with his eyes closed. He'd be perfect.
Though he could never play Dr. Horrible...
Let's mix them together and use the result!

But as for a Riddler in a GOOD movie... we need some one who can present hubris, genius, anger but also a sort've "fun" when it comes to the puzzles themselves. I'm going to go with either Neil Patrick Harris (So I watched Dr. Horrible recently, shoot me) or maybe Sean William Scott. I figure both of those guys are dying for a serious role, they both talk quickly but clearly for the riddles themselves, both have a lot of acting experience and both could dye their hair the necessary orange.

Neil would be very good but the soliloquizing songs would be out of place (what do you mean its not cool to love doctor horrible and have it on your Ipod?)

The thing about the current Joker or Scarecrow is that they came entirely from left field. Nobody pictured Heath "Brokeback" Ledger as a proper joker, and Cillian "Breakfast at Pluto's" Murphy as a proper scarecrow, and yet they ran with it. So, in the good spirit of the Nolan.

you've obviously never heard of Blackadder, several short-running comedy serieses that ran in britain in the 1980's with rowan atkinson (aka mr bean) playing the short-tempered, always-getting-scrooged lead character, and hugh laurie playing his moronic accomplice, george. hugh is a very talented actor, and one of the best comedy actors of all time. house proved to me that he can take on a more serious role, and the riddler's touch of lunacy mixed with hugh's skill could create something amazing.

if you've never seen any of the blackadder series, i highly suggest you do. blackadder II (set around 1100 AD, i think) was great, but my personal favourite was blackadder goes forth (set during ww1)

I also agree Hugh would be good but I'm not sure that his American accent would lend its self to the riddler's quick style, it would make me think differently of him but if he used his British one he would seem out of place but more suited to the role quite a conundrum

- Timothy Olyphant - His performance in Die Hard 4 and in Hitman sold him for me. If someone can play a cold-hearted psychopath or an almost autistic-like persona full of mixed feelings, that's Olyphant.

Longshot: Keanu Reaves - I know. "WHAT THE FUCK? THE ONE-ROLE-MAN?". Well, truth is, Keanu has gotten better at his "ability to excel at one role but suck at everything else". I was pleasantly surprised with his performance in both Constantine and Street Kings. With Nolan's guidance, I seriously think he could pull it off, his innate "...what?" look could actually benefit his character.

I was just thinking that Keanu could do this. He is kind of the one role man, but if he could loosen up for something like this it would make for good effect: seeing someone as typically stone-faced as him as the Riddler would make it really entertaining.

Also, I'm with you on Olyphant. He could pull it off really well. I just don't want to see it from Johnny Depp. I really do like his acting, but it just gets old seeing him in so many different places.

But, for a drastic change I would go for Max Theriot (Catch that Kid, The Pacifer). He is only about 20 years old, but from what I've seen he has great potential. If anyone went for a really young Riddler I would definitely make this choice.

OT: I don't want to see a Riddler in the next movie. There are plenty of good Batman villains, but casting another clever trickster would seem too repetitive, at least for me. Nolan illustrated the Joker as an intelligent, yet delusional, nihilist who's whole life is consumed with playing games with Batman (although they are usually more Mephistopheles-esque moral dilemmas than "games"). The Riddler also carries this persona- he plays intellectual tricks on Batman to see if he can solve them.

I'd very much like to see Killer Croc or Clayface. Although Clayface shouldn't be characterized like Sandman in Spiderman 3, lest people get confused.
