Why assume that everybody would want to be someone else?
For the moment I'm quite satisfied with being me.

Then why are you involving yourself in the thread.

Because it had to be said that there are quite a few people who are confident and comfortable enough that they don't wish they were a fictional character.

No it didn't. We all know there are people who are comfortable with being themselves, that goes without question. However why is it that you find it neccesary to participate in a thread that is not of your interest?

Yea, have to agree here. Besides, it's just a question. I like being me, but thinking about being an awesome anime character is fun too, no?
And uhm.. I'd like to be Shikamaru. Being lazy is always fun, and watching clouds is too. And I guess he has some fangirls, right? With being lazy, that's great.

Hmm... I can't decide, so i'm gonna pick two, a good guy and a bad guy.
First, I would like to be Edward Elric.

First, because I wish I was that ripped when I was 15 years old.
He is a decent fighter, hes got a robotic arm that he transmutes into weapons, and he is somewhat of a genius, even though he cheated by staring into "The Gate."
He is devoted, kind hearted, has a bit of a temper problem, and will sacrifice everything for what he has set out to do.

Okay, second, my bad guy of choice, I'm gonna bend the rules and go to a Video Game turned into a manga.

In the manga, which is much much better than the Battle Network games or dreadful anime, he was your standard "creation that was cast aside and now wants to take his revenge out on mankind that shunned and feared him. but what I liked about him in the manga was that when he fought with Megaman.EXE first it was out of hate, then it was out of respect for his power and he wanted to finally best him, and near the end of the manga Bass.EXE actually saved Megaman.EXE just so he wouldn't lose his greatest adversary.
Also, hes got a mother fucking cloak, I fucking love cloaks.

3 Anyone who has watched Cowboy Bebop knows he has a troubled pass but I could live with it
4 I could easily live with his faith as he goes out in a vengeance fuelled last stand mission to probably one of the best blues songs I know

Seconded, the only difference is that "me-Spike" would've stopped smoking, or never started at all. But I can relate to him very very well.

I don't have a picture, but Kenshiro, from Hokuto no Ken. The reason being, well, despite the whole world being nuked before the anime/manga starts, and despite the fact that afterwards, Kenshiro's life pretty much sucks, he's also basically the strongest pure human character ever, without any kind of "But he's actually..." He's a human. Not a demon, not a wizard, not an alien, (not anything else) he's just a human who has amazing abilities gotten purely through training.

Also, he practices a Kung Fu (literally, as it is a chinese style that migrated to Japan) called Hokuto Shinken, which allows the user to both heal people and make other people explode by poking them. What's not to like?

Goku from DBZ. It doesnt matter how badass, Cool, awesome looking, well written and developed other characters are. If I had to be someone, I would definitely be the one that flies teleports and shoots fireballs that can destroy planets out of their hands.

I know I've said Isara Gunther in the past. However after watching GITS: SAC, I would have to switch my answer to Motoko Kusanagi.
What sold me on Motoko was her calm yet assertive nature. She virtually never seems to lose control of herself or the situation she's in.

You seem to be forgetting in the film of the TV series GIT:SAC:solid state society
