As my friends and I sat in the computer lab of the university today trying to complete yet another frustratingly anal programming assignment; we began arguing amongst ourselves as to who was going to piss off our professor next by asking him the umpteenth question of the day about said assignment.

The argument came to an end when they looked at me and said "Well you're the one wearing the red shirt, you should go ask him." Yes, I had a red shirt on and thus was the expendable person.

For those few of you unfamiliar with the concept of the "Red Shirt" I feel this quote rather sums it up quite well The Red Shirt is a sci-fi idiom for the anonymous, the expendable, the smoking boots behind a boulder."

So I now ask you, who in your life would you consider the proverbial "Red Shirt" when the going gets tough?

I'd say I'm the crimson shirt. Yeah, it's red, so I take all the risks, but I ain't died yet. I mostly come out on top, if not just alive, so I'm just a good Red Shirt.

Most of the time, I get selected as the proverbial 'red shirt' simply because I'm the one that makes the decision and isn't afraid to see it through. I'm not afraid of 'death'.

Haha, I heartily approve of this topic! In real life I'm not so sure, but one of my friends tends to be the one who has caused the situation in the first place, so he tends to be the one who gets "phasered" by the disgruntled teacher, so to speak. Not so much a red shirt as a red face, usually!

actually it comes from Star Trek, they were the ones who started the trend because usually on an away team there was Capt Kirk, Spock, Dr McCoy and an ensign in a red shirt who would die a horrible death shortly after arriving

i don't really have an ensign expendable in my life

Well I'm wearing a red shirt right now, so I guess it's me. If fact, I was always the one sent up to ask questions are school, no matter what, so I guess that's me in general. :)

The IT guys at the office.
The folks who call me up, saying that their computer's not working when their monitor's off.

Ah, IT...

Aye I knew it comes from star trek, but I felt that particular quote was a very good sum up of the red shirt's role :)

-EDIT-
I remember one particular episode of TNG where you've got all the officers and one random unnamed person surrounded by surly aliens with disintegration guns. I could only say "Oh you poor bastard" as the aliens took aim.

That's the same for me. I'm not the Red Shirt by nature, but when I'm working on a group assignment, and no one knows what to do, and their idea of fixing the problem is to sit around asking, "gosh, what now?" over and over again, I get so fed up I change into a Red Shirt, bite the phaser, and just ask the guy in charge what to do.
