DCI Gene Hunt

In Life on Mars he was the hardass who got the job done and then in Ashes to Ashes he was painted as the villian until being revealed as the true hero of the series

And he did it with a chest full of smart remarks

Have any other detectives mentioned in this thread died? Can they shoot fire? Hmm?

Apart from looking around building now and again, I can't actually think of much detective work he does. But his occupation's detective, so I say it counts.

I'm tempted to say Phillip Marlowe as well, but I'll go to Hammett's other detective and say the Continental Op. Because the Op is far more badass than Marlowe.

Im going to say John Constantine from the hellblazer comic, not the slaughtered version Keanu Reeves did, tho he should never have been cast to that role, the least they could have done was to get a guy that could do a decent english acsent...

Sherlock Holmes

Runners up include (but are not limited to):

Derrik (from german TV show)
Hercule Poirot (by Agatha Christie)
Samuel Vimes (the Discworld novels)
Inspector Morse
Inspector Douglesh
Taggart (the one and only!)
John Rebus
Det. Sgt. Jim Bergerac (I like john Nettles also in Midsommer murders)
Annika Bengtzon
Kurt Wallander
Mikael Blomkvist & Lisbeth Salander (Fuck yeah!)
Dr. Gregory House (does he count?)
Batman

These are just what I can thik of right now.
And why are most of the great detectives british??

Would the Doctor count? He finds things, figures out what they are, then catches the killers. Then he pwns them so hard that they won't try and shoot him the next time, which comes in handy a lot when the Daleks show up.
Do you really need a detective when Daleks are about? It's pretty darn obvious!

Other than that, I agree and then say Sherlock Holmes!

Because we invented the modern police force as it would be recognised today.
OT: Sherlock Holmes, followed by Monk and Dr Mark Sloan

INSPECTOR GADGET
So corny, it's amazing. I remember watching the two horrid tween movies when I WAS a tween. Good times.

His gadgets were wonky and something always went wrong, but he'd win out in the end. Very Scooby Doo that way.
Speaking of which...
This.
Inspector Gadget is just the best damned detective in the universe, no question.

And also, if Jim Gordon from Batman counts, I would gladly pick him.
