Not entirely sure. I remember being little and having the first boss of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes stump me so bad I put it down and never played it again for a whole year.

Flashing forward to something more recent, the first time I fought Mankar Camoran in TES IV: Oblivion I was drastically underpowered due to a horrible character build and equipment set. Shamefully, I had to turn it to easy.

/goes to cry in the corner out of shame

I would normally agree to this, but I finally decided to challenge Dullahan. Stupid Djinn Storm...just like the Doom Dragon.

I have four, and to be fair they're pretty tame in comparison, and I did eventually beat them, it just took a while. The final Darth Vader fight in Force Unleashed on the hardest difficulty, not because he was hard, but his fucking health DID NOT GO DOWN, and then he'd hit me with some bullshit unblockable attack. Deadpool in Wolverine on the hardest difficulty, that fuckers health didn't go down either, that took me a long fucking time to do. Legate Lanius again because of his health, and running out of ammo I didnt think to turn the difficulty down to easy. And finally the final boss on DMC4 on any difficulty harder than normal, because the only way you can beat him is by blocking at the exact right time, theres literally about a second in which u need to block, in the end I just used Holy Waters on him, it pissed me off that much. Special mention goes to Nightmare Train on Tekken 6...fuck that level, seriously, just fuck it.

1st Alma in Ninja Gaiden xbox on higher difficulties.

Also, Nero vs Dante in DMC on Dante Must Die, not really that hard to beat (once you get to DMD you can beat him easily), but it's really hard to beat him with STYLE. Cheap shotgun blast BAM there goes two style ranks.

As hard as ADOM and IWBTG are, the final bosses aren't really the worst part.

So instead, I'll nominate Yukari Yakumo, from Perfect Cherry Blossom. Let's say you beat the game on Normal with no continues - a feat in itself. Then you get the horrendously difficult Extra stage. Beat that too? Great! Now you get the Phantasm stage, which is the same but worse, culminating in the hardest boss of the entire series.

Keep watching, it gets worse with horrifying frequency.
It's too bad that guy completely cheesed the last two phases. And he has the gall to upload such a shameful video! Pansy...

I was going to mention proud mode Sephiroth in Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, but yeah, Yukari probably takes the cake.

Sephiroth only took me a week, maybe two. Think I was on Yukari for a good couple months before I finally beat her. Felt amazing when I did it.
I hear there are harder shmups out there, to be fair. And, say, Demons' Souls might be harder. Never played it.

Sephiroth proud mode on KH2... that's a funny story. A friend had trouble beating him, so he asked me for help. Except I had never played KH before. Four hours later, Sephiroth was down. I'm still not sure how that happened.

This makes the dude who double-plays (one guy piloting two aircraft) Ikaruga look like a pansy. Also... Them patterns are beatiful, hypnotic AND DEADLY.
That they are. One of the appeals of the series, really, that sets it apart from other shmups - really nice-looking, elaborate patterns rather than "here, just have some more bullets."

Also, really? I kinda thought the double-play thing was a good deal more impressive than beating Yukari. On the other hand, I've never played Ikaruga (plan to some day, though), so I may be way off.

Most of the higher marks for FFXII were unbearably difficult for me. Hell, even some of the regular bosses were true tests of endurance and patience for me. But those elite marks were just truly unbearable. I'll never forget the name Yiazmat. The horror, the horror...
The flashbacks, oh dear lord the flashbacks... NO! I don't want to go back there, you cant make meeeee!!

Ehem.

I can't beat Sephiroth from Kingdom Hearts 1. I just can't do it. Bastarding Sephiroth.

The God Dragon in Demon Souls. It was pure luck if you get through it or not. Almost every move he has is an insta-kill, unless you have the right armor then the moves only take you down to half health.

All I can say is that I never thought I could swear so much at a game before I played Demon Souls.

Tela Vasir on Insanity.

Dear.
Lord.

Never could I have conceived something with so much damned health.

EDIT: That's my recent one. My general one is Queen Larsa from Mushihimesama. That's just insane.

My mind goes to the hard games. Demons Souls, and stuff like that. But, I think the trophy goes to the first hard boss of the modern generation of games; Phantom from Devil May Cry! When you encounter him, you've had so little opportunity to advance Dante's abilities. Maybe you were able to buy a green orb. Perhaps another rune for when Dante goes into Demon mode. Working with so little, Phantom smacked the crap out of Dante, requiring you the player to skill up in a real hurry. If you didn't have what it took to beat The Phantom at the time, the rest of the game was going to demolish you. It was a trial, almost litterly, by fire.

I might have been exaggerating... Still tho, if this doesn't impress you, you aren't human:

Ah yes, lava scorpion-spider combo beat the everloving shit out of you. If you look up "wake-up-call boss" in the dictionary, chances are, you'll see a picture of him.

Pffft! Try the final bogeys in Vanquish on "god hard", then talk about difficult bosses.

god of war:
final boss = Ares
difficulty = god mode
god mode= RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGEE
especially when he is on his FREAKIN SPIDER LEGS
it took me 3 days (with breaks thank god) to master every block and every dodge for his moves

Oh yes, definitely. I've seen it before. Like I said, it's probably a fair bit better than what I managed. I mean, it's not like I got a landslide victory or anything like that - I rarely manage to end the level with anything more than one life and one bomb.

Ninja gaiden will always win these things. Any boss on the hardest difficulty could make a new apocalypse.

Well, as other posts have confirmed, Demon's Souls has got to take this. Every boss can take you down to about half health in a single hit, if not insta-kill you.
