As hard as ADOM and IWBTG are, the final bosses aren't really the worst part.

So instead, I'll nominate Yukari Yakumo, from Perfect Cherry Blossom. Let's say you beat the game on Normal with no continues - a feat in itself. Then you get the horrendously difficult Extra stage. Beat that too? Great! Now you get the Phantasm stage, which is the same but worse, culminating in the hardest boss of the entire series.

Keep watching, it gets worse with horrifying frequency.

You guys are all talking way new games. All the games in the past ten years are nowhere near as hard as the original games of NES. The newest boss I've faced that was actually so hard I couldn't beat him was the American Ultima on FFVII. I didn't realized this guy gets harder the higher level you are so I fought him as almost max level on all the characters. He has an attack that wipes out everyone on my team except Cloud with one hit and leaves Cloud with minimal life. Sephiroth's most powerful attack just always brought your characters to 10% life but couldn't kill them. You had to kill multiple body parts on this guy it took the combined forces all of three of my people to destroy them. Then on the next turn, THE VERY NEXT TURN, he'd just regenerate whatever body part I just destroyed. When I tried to revive my friends with Cloud he'd use that one-hit attack again and wipe out Cloud and my newly-revived comrade. Apparently the stratgedy was to fight him at level 60 or so but I didn't know he got so friggin powerful the higher level you got.

However the hardest boss I ever had to fight was the final boss on LoZ2. First off, you have to fight your way from the beginning temple across the entire danger-filed landscape to the last dungeon. Then you had to fight your way through the entire dungeon, which was relatively hard, so you could go fight Dark Link. Now this Dark Link way nothing like the Dark Link of OoT that you just had to know not to try to stab at him. This DL had every attack you had and was invincible to your magic, it was basically like fighting another player. If you made it past him you got to fight the last boss which was something like a giant phoenix that took most of the screen, spun around in an almost all-encompassing circle and shot tiny little kill bullets at you with, again, invincibility to magic. It might not sound hard but just try this out for yourself and you'll be able to see how ridiculous this boss was. Did I mention anytime you died, you didn't start at a save point close by, you started ALL THE WAY BACK AT THE BEGINNING TEMPLE.

Dullahan, but for some reason he seems easier in Dark Dawn. He still is a nightmare to defeat in TLA.

Only once was I able to beat him.
Why do people always find this thing hard? I easily murder him... Must have something to do with the fact I'm good at games with a fast pace. I mean I beat Dragonball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3 on hard mode.

Most of the higher marks for FFXII were unbearably difficult for me. Hell, even some of the regular bosses were true tests of endurance and patience for me. But those elite marks were just truly unbearable. I'll never forget the name Yiazmat. The horror, the horror...

The Antlion Bulls from Half-Life 2.
Not REALLY bosses, more mini-bosses really, but still. Those bastards practically ATE your bullets. I emptied 290 SMG bullets, 90 Pulse Rifle Bullets, 3 SMG Grenades and about 30 point blank shotgun slugs into the thick bastarding skull of the buggering thing and it FINALLY died, only it smashed me in my ruggedly handsome and mute face a couple time, reducing my bones to mush and pulp, but hell... It was dead...
Then combine rappelled off the roofs and shot my face off.
Never have I ran so fast for health kits.

Oh, and the wierd attack chopper things, I hated them, especially in the attic in Episode One, I distinctly remember it not giving me so much bloody trouble the first time I played through EP1.

Ah yes Yaimat... He was not particularly hard, just a HUGE health bar. AND I MEAN HUGE! 50 MILLION HP!? Is Square insane!? Took me 2 entire weeks to dig that health down.

that wasn't even the final boss, the final hazard was, the biolizard was harder but once you get the pattern down and with a little bit of luck on the final hit you're golden.

Actually, I had a bit of trouble (not much, but enough) with the Ice Queen in Dark Cloud, simply because Ruby was severely under-powered at the time. Oh, and I tried to kill the Lagiacrus during the monster guts quest ... don't judge me! I'd gotten in a few hits without being hit myself and I got cocky, luckily I had all 3 monster guts when I died, so I just ended the quest there.

This too, Aeon Spamming away (because you get the extra couple thousand damage from killing the symbiote thing)!!!

The Angel car in Rage Racer on PS1 (favorite racing game ever, incidentally). That game was famous for rubber-banding, and the Angel car was also just way faster than everything else. You spent the entire race watching him fly up in your rear view mirror, then swerving to block him. Also, you couldn't make any mistakes with respect to the actual track or he'd pass you. And you couldn't be driving anything less than the Devil car (faster than everything but Angel), so the racing was hard as hell. Three laps of that. I think it took me about 200 tries.
