Why all the hate for TOR?

Iv been her for a while and iv enjoy looking through the forums and stuff but there is one thing that i keep seeing pop up that is kind of bothering me. Everywhere i look someone is saying that The Old Republic, or TOR (the upcoming Star Wars MMO that BioWare is making) is stupid or a bad move for MMOs in general or other random bad things about it, but iv never seen one piece of worthy evidence to back this up. Anytime i see somebody trying to explain why they think its gonna be bad their logic seems flimsy and easily dismissed. I honestly think that BioWare has some great ideas for TOR and the finished product will be interesting to say the least. So I wanna know why so many people are so hostile towards TOR.

I don't know. I'm looking forward to it. Each class has its own full-length KOTOR story. You'd be getting 8 KOTOR's in one, so yeah, I'm psyched as hell for it.

It does seem a bit too much like WoW though, which is probably where quite a bit of the hate stems from. Which is understandable I guess.

It's yet another WoW clone, except one with a huge budget. For some people that's an awesome game. For others, it's boring and they would rather see something innovative in the MMO market, like The Secret World is trying to do. I'm in the latter camp.

This. Some people might not be interested, but most people seem to either be super psyched up or cautiously optimistic about the whole thing. I fall into the latter category. I'd love to see it succeed, but I don't want to get too invested.

Haven't seen many folks hating on it, really. I plan on giving it a shot, as I like BioWare games in general and KotOR in particular... but I don't expect much out of other players when I do play it...

...I really don't think the combat is going to be merely another EverQuest clone (which is what WoW is). It looks more like a hybrid of certain classes within typical MMOs mixed with a little of the philosophy behind City of Heroes/Villains combat (as in, there is no "normal" attack. Everything is a technique, and each attack has to be activated on its own).

'Course, I'm a little biased. Boring, lackluster combat is my #1 complaint about EQ, WoW, and all of their clones.

I personally can't wait. And I detest MMO's.

There are a few nay-sayers, but that comes with almost every game ever. I can't name one game that has gotten community wise praise from this site.

That all said, why would I hate it? I love Bioware games. Mass Effect was great, Kotor was great, Dragon Age was great, whose to say this game won't be?

There's only one personnal thing that bothers me: Bioware not making KOTOR 3. Not only that, but They said that TOR is KOTOR 3, 4 , 5 and 6...

I'm going to say "dick move guys".

I personally look forward to this game. I mean being a Jedi or a Sith is like everyone's dream from the minute they watched Star Wars. And there are some interesting details in the game. I actually think the Crew Skills system will make me want to craft since I don't have to sit down and craft everything myself. Especially if I don't have to worry about the day, the time, how full the moon is, and what direction I'm facing. And yes, I know a MMO that you had to consider that, though there was no hint in the game about it. People just figured that out.

But I have seen some hate for it. I don't think they have any good reasons though. Haters gotta hate, right?

Most of the negativity I've seen comes from people who wish Bioware were doing KOTOR 3 instead of an MMO.

I'm sceptical. I think it'll be interesting, but that's not the same as being good, and Bioware's reputation for making good single player games doesn't necessarily translate to MMOs.

Bioware fans will like it, but will they pay monthly for it for any length of time?

Star Wars fans will like it, except for those who'll hate it for not being a proper KOTOR 3, or for not being pre-NGE Star Wars Galaxies.

MMO fans will burn through it within a month and then start bitching about the endgame and the lack of balance in PVP, because that's what they always do.

I think TOR's emphasis on story will turn out to be its biggest weakness. Quality content takes time to make, and subscription MMOs needs either regular updates or huge endgame timesink grinds to keep people coming back. WoW's quest writers have a strict, and short word limit to work to for a reason, and there's an awful lot of MMO players who don't give a shit about the story and will keep their finger poised on the Skip Dialogue button.

Frack, I haven't heard of The Old Republic since the trailer came out a few months ago.

But all I've heard is praise, speculation or skeptism about it.

And how does that make TOR bad? I'd say Bioware has been planning this for a while. Probably why they didn't make KOTOR2 themselves (for all that that means). I think what they are trying to say there is that this game is the size of 5 or 6 or more KOTOR games. Besides it does continue the story of KOTOR and you can play solo from what I've heard. Where's the problem?

1. It's Star wars for gods sake, we already had an MMO, it wasn't that successful, this IP needs to die with dignity already, if it has any left that is.
2. Bioware has Mass Effect as a perfect MMO setting available immediately yet they're doing Star Wars, the only reason for this is financial security, usually I wouldn't mind but this is Bioware we're talking about, probably the best developer studio at the moment, if they won't take risks, who will?

I'm curious about it. Depending on how it does and what's actually in the game it could be the first MMO I've ever played.

In a genre market where WoW is something you have to compete against, making any game at ALL is a risk. Mass Effect might have an MMO come along somewhere down the pike, but Star Wars is the better option for an initial attempt.
