Halo's story:
- Barely existing in Halo 1.
- Very good in Halo 2.
- Not as good in Halo 3, but still pretty good.
Halo's graphics:
- Halo 1 was very good for its time.
- Halo 2 was pretty bad, barely an improvement over Halo 1.
- Halo 3 has very nice graphics, and more than that, great environmental design.
Halo's music:
- Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori have done an amazing job for all three games, creating a unique, enjoyable, and memorable set of soundtracks for the Halo series. You can identify them as Halo's music just by listening to them - they are distinctive.
Halo's gameplay:
- The halo series has very fun gameplay; the shield mechanics save players from the uncomfortable scrounging-for-health business of bad games like Ghost Recon. Movement is steady and accurate, combat is simple and precise, and the difficulty system allows for everyone to have fun: casual gamers and fratboys can play on easy/normal, and get a really easy game, perfect to unwind and relax, while those of us who want a challenge can play on Legendary, and get a very difficult shooter.
Problems with Halo:
Honestly, I can't think of any. The halo series is fun, it's well-made, I would go so far as to say it's perfect. Meant to be first person shooters and they are basically the perfect FPS - I challenge any of the haters to find a better FPS than the Halo series. As far as I can tell, most of the problems seem to stem from people hating on it just because it's popular.
About myself: I'm not a fratboy or a casual, so stow your assumptions. I primarily play RTS games and true RPGs, almost always on the PC, I stand against things like "next-gen" and casual games, and my favourite game is Thief 2. So no, I am not biased in favour of the Halo series - indeed, I'd be somewhat biased against it due to later console exclusivity, and I still regard it as the perfect FPS series.
PS: The reason Halo feels bland to you is because it's so awesome it's spread everywhere, and you've gotten desensitized to it. Imagine if all you drank every day was Root Beer. It may be modern-day ambrosia, but soon enough you'd find it pretty bland too.
