i dont understand the hate, either... i mean, its not my kind of show, but i watched it for a while when it first came out in America. it was okay, with a few exceptional episodes. i particularly enjoyed the one episode (or two? it is a saga, afterall) where that dude that controls shadows was battling that girl in the arena. the series isnt bad, thats for sure.

maybe the hate is due to the fact that some kids in high school like to wear Naruto headbands to school, and it gives the show a bad name? who knows

Naruto is my favorite anime. Probably always will be, too. That show is amazing, maybe some of the filler isn't but the battles... breathtaking. I'll never forget the battle against Pain for as long as I live.

I know threads about why someone else does or doesn't like something I do or don't like are abundant, but this is one I just really don't understand, and I'd be interested to know why. Personally, it?s not my favorite anime, but I love it anyway. It?s a fantastic coming-of-age story with interesting, strategic battles and well-developed characters that are easy to care deeply about.

It?s fine not to like it, of course; you are entitled to your tastes. But the anime community seems to largely consider Naruto the quintessential example of a terrible, overrated anime, like it?s the cool thing to hate, and I just don?t understand that.

A common complaint I?ve heard is about the filler, but the fact is this is not sufficient reason to decry the show?s quality, mainly because it is simply the lesser of two evils. Shows like Full Metal Alchemist and Death Note, while both amazing shows, amount to disappointing endings because they just did their own thing when they caught up with the manga. Naruto instead takes the approach of making a filler arc when it catches up to the manga on which it?s based, in order to let the manga get ahead enough for the anime to adapt it. Filler is necessary in order to keep the show running while allowing the show to still follow the story of its source material. That?s far better than just going off on its own and eventually ending disappointingly.

Beyond that, if you hate the filler, skip it. The rest of the show is great, even if some of the filler really isn?t; something such as filler, which is made specifically so it can be easily skipped, simply does not speak to the quality of the show as a whole.

I?ve heard plenty about the constant flashbacks and monologues, but it?s really only a little more excessive than most everything that comes out of Japan. They love that stuff. When a character realizes something important, or has a moment of self-reflection, they will monologue about it. That?s how it works; the vast majority of anime and JRPGs consist largely of this inner dialogue. So I don?t understand how this can be an argument against one particular show without being an argument against the entire artistic culture (which I think we can all agree would be a bit ethno-centric).

These are just my thoughts; anyone care to share what it is that apparently makes this show so terrible?

EDIT: The English dub is also a weak argument (though it is awful). Don't complain if what amounts to an American vocal adaptation is sub-par, just watch the original.
Different strokes for different folks man, not a hard concept to grasp.

Noooooo you watched the dub how could you!!! Watch with subs or you ear will burn...
Listen, I know the sub vs dub argument inside and out. Despite efforts by people to insist watching in the original language, the vast majority still only watch in the language they speak.
I must say that is probably right in USA but Im not so sure if that is competely correct if you look at EU/asia but I could be wrong..

For an example.. I do no like to watch movies/series in Swedish since it just doesnt feel right and very few people can actually sound "badass" in Swedish (Imo)
I'm Canadian, but that doesn't really matter. North America is still the largest individual consumer of anime outside of Japan itself, so most people have only watched the dubs.

Of course, dubs can still be funny, like the Swedish Digimon.
Er, no your wrong
Good to know, mind telling me how?

I watch it now and then. When you filter out the fillers Naruto is a pretty good anime with a nice story and great characters. I hope the current filler arc doesn't last too long because I honestly am sick of those one episode stories. I don't want Naruto on a boat. I want Naruto kickin' some Akatsuki a**!

Know what I'll never forget? The rage that 4 months of filler after the battle with Pain.

4 months. Let that sink in a little.

tbh... dont do dubs on any anime what so ever... it sucks go subtitles with original voices... makes them 75% better than what they already are

I grew out of Naruto when I found more sophisticated Anime (i.e. the works of Katsuhiro Otomo and Satoshi Kon), but I was really into it for a while. Here's what happened:

The filler, obviously, is a major deterrent (there's a major problem when 90% of a given season can be cut out without missing anything), and distracted from the main storyline. As the series progressed, it became more and more apparent to me that a lot of the character's (especially the female ones) were flat as all fuck (unless you count breast expansion, zing!). I really just stopped caring about what anyone was doing after a while, and that wasn't helped at all by the series falling into "one-upmanship syndrome." After a certain point in the series, the show just lost any touch with restraint and had characters of all skill levels (especially Sasuke) pull increasingly ridiculous overpowered attacks, completely out of their asses- with little or no consequences. Then everyone else did the same thing just to catch up. A lot of the episodes started to have degrading animation quality later in the series, and tons of new characters were introduced with little reason to make me care about them. Finally, and what was really the last straw for me, was that they just wouldn't fucking die. Entire villages get wiped out, entire swathes of people get torn apart, and just when I think things are finally getting serious in preparation for the big finale, everything returns completely to status quo within two episodes (with maybe, one named character death in all that)- and it continues again with a completely unrelated storyline, totally undermining any drama the series had built up to that point.

Fine, I said, if you're not going to take this seriously- why should I?

The build up in the story, like this, is what makes it my truly favorite anime.

The Pain battle was.. just..
Pure amazement.

And I can guarantee the final Naruto vs Sasuke fight will be just as breathtaking.

The anime was catching up to the manga.
It was 4 months of filler or 4 months of nothing when it caught up completely.
EDIT: I do, however, totally agree with you.. I stopped watch for that entire time because it was so ridiculous.

It's obnoxious, repetitive, and dragging. Personally, I never actually SAW Naruto, but judging from the character design and general personality about the show I'm pretty certain I wouldn't like it. Too many children and adolescents with baby fat as the main characters.

The shonen tournament show I REALLY can't stand is Ruroni Kenshin. CONSTANT COMMENTARY from the peanut gallery, and the fights move at a snail's pace.

"Oh no! He's using TWO swords, and they're short! That means Kenshin won't be able to blah blah blah, blah blah blah blah blah!"

"What!? TWO swords? And they're short!?! Kenshin is so screwed because short swords are defensive and Kenshin won't be able to blah blah blah blah blah!"

Yes, I get it...

"WOW! Kenshin's holding it at the base of the blade instead of the handle, which removes a full three motherfucking inches! That means he'll be on even footing with him because blah blah blah, blah blah blah!"

Shut up.

"The base of the blade!? Wow!"

Shut UP.

"Hiten Mitsurugi fighting style!"

SHUT UP!

"Hiten Mitsurugi fighting style!? Wow!"

GOD MOTHERFUCKING DAMN IT.

It's the kind of shit that makes the infinite stare-downs in Dragonball Z look like they move at mach 2 and are full of rip-roaring suspense.

My favorites were always the sci-fi series. Give me Ghost in the Shell. Give me Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, and Outlaw Star. Give me the classic Gundam series. That stuff, that's what I liked; definite story arcs, definite endings, iconic characters and moments, fun toys galore.

The huge amount of filler probably. Yeah Bleach has filler too, but it does so a lot better.

And in the manga probably the huge ass focus on Sasuke for way to long.

That being said, the manga is probably the best its been in a long time.

I love Naruto too . . and I was fine with the filler . . . at first. When it was a long-self contained story it was fine. I had no problem with "Sora" arc, and even the crystal ark wasn't too bad. When they switched it to random episodes that were pretty weak in the story area, and still not that great action, then yeah I disliked it.

But still, I love Naruto.

Basically - in my opinion - if you're watching the Naruto anime, you're wasting your time.
The same goes for any of the major Jump titles, that's right One Piece and Bleach, I'm talking about you.

However, if you're reading the manga?
Naruto seriously lost me for a long long time, it became stale and boring. But recently (well over the last year) it's picked the hell up. The recent manga chapters are seriously cool with some pretty intense stuff going on. It no longer feels like basic shounen crap and has moved into the more grown up, and awesome, territory that I think One Piece has been occupying for quite some time.

So where does all the hate on Naruto come from?
I'd say, from people who have either only watched the incredibly drawn out and tedious anime, or from people that gave up on it before it became good again.

I started to hate it when I realized that the entire first season, with Zabuza and the damn bridge was pointless. I was buying the manga and for a series to make me want to continue purchasing it, it shouldn't waste my damn time. It's not the filler, it is the god awful story telling that bothered me. That and when I stopped (during their test to be promoted) there wasn't a single likeable character. Not one. Bad storytelling.

Out of all animes I think it has the most filler. I'd say it has even more than Bleach.

Also it's not animated as well as other, shorter, filler-free animes.

Well, there is a pretty simple way to bypass a lot of these problems. Just read the manga. No filler, and YOU come up with the character's voices. (hooray for imagination!)
