I am getting really annoyed at horror movies. The characters always make the same idiotic choice to split up,whoever isn't white dies and the girl can't lift anything exceeding 3 grams and trips over every single object in her path.

For me its pretty hard to watch horror movies when the only thoughts going through my head are:Go back to your car theres nothing stopping you. Or Why wont you lock the door!

I always end up on murderer's side because he's the only one who can actually think!

its not exactly a horror movie, but the Walking Dead characters seem to be generally capable, at least from what ive see/ read.
Feel free to correct me, I only saw one episode, and read a few issues

Wow.. That's a massive generalization.
My thoughts exactly... broaden your horizons, buddy. There aren't all stereotypical.

Those aren't horror movies, those are mindless slashers pumped out like bunnies. All they're good for is the occasional startle due to the cheap 'horror' that doesn't stick with you.

Horizons do indeed need to be broadened. From the sound of it OP, the only horror movies you've ever watched had the words 'Friday' and '13th' in them.

And now I have the moral dilemma of whether or not to link to my top 10 list <.<
DO EET! Your top ten is awesome anyways.

Well, think about it; the vast majority of all movies in any genre are going to be generic, cliched, not particularly good, or follow the same basic formulas. There just happens to be an abundance of cheap executive mandated horror movies right now, perhaps because there's a stigma against the horror genre that makes people think that horror films, especially slashers, can be mindless and poorly written and still be profitable.

That doesn't mean there aren't good horror films being made today. It just means that you have to wade through the generic popcorn flicks to find the genuinely thoughtful ones. Also, don't forget that a lot of writers and actors get their start in something like horror, which isn't too difficult to get into, which can make for less in the way of quality, although inexperience doesn't automatically equate to lack of talent or creativity.

Seriously, though, horror isn't the only genre that's become ridden with cliche, where you can anticipate every single thing that's going to happen right from the start. Most movies are going to be strictly formula, because they know what works. Look at romantic comedies or sports movies, for example. There's an abundance of those movies which are pretty much indistinguishable from one another.

hmm I'm beginning to see a pattern but whenever I try to find a non stereotypical one I never can because those are the ones everyone recommends for some strange reason.

Well if they didn't make stupid choices this is what a lot of horror movies would be like:

1. Creepy things start happening.
2. Characters sensibly leave for safer area.
3. THE END

It a bit of a generalization but having the characters make mistakes helps to heighten the tension of the movie. Plus they're scared out of their mind, they might just make a wrong choice here or there.

Exactly what i was going to say.
Suspension of Disbelief if the characters didn't do things that you wouldn't usually do, there'd be no movie.
Chances are if a Billionaire got trapped in a cave by terrorists he wouldn't make a big iron suit to break himself free :) (Bit redundant but Cookie for the OBVIOUS reference)
