...did I say anything about hardcore games? I was just talking about the influx of casual games and the transformation of previously non-casual titles into family entertainment. Sure, there are still those awesome companies who still have the gamer in mind. There probably always will be. But I disagree that they are increasing in number. I mean, the level of difficulty has decreased across the board (just play Supermario 64 and then play Supermario Galaxy, the difference is practically palpable) and casual games vastly outnumber hardcore games.
What you said was that people will buy games because they are 'casual' and that somehow bastardizes the industry, transforming 'hardcore' titles into something else. And yet the three games I mentioned happened. On Wii. Thus, the whole 'casual games corrupting the industry from within' is utter bullshit. These aren't half-thought out titles. These are bona-fide quality games. 'Casual' games aren't damaging the games that are truly great.
I never said that every title for the wii was a casual game. And yes, those games did well. However, saying that casual games have quality is a stretch. Have you seen all the carnival, baby sitter, zoo pets, dress up, teaching, and cooking games that are out right now for the wii as well? You can't tell me those were well-thought out. There are so many glitches that they are practically unplayable, they have virtually no plot, and the graphics look like someone slathered pixles onto a tv screen. The fact is that many companies use innovative technology (such as the wii motion controls) to make half-hearted and half-assed games because they know that people will buy them. It's simply an excuse to put as little effort into a game in order to maximize the profit.

Not all of those games are well thought out, no. Sturgeon's Law shows itself true again. But there are well thought-out 'casual' games. Games like Puzzle Quest, the Wii _____ series, the Raving Rabbids games, Nintendogs, Plants vs. Zombies... I'm sure there are more, but I really can't recall them right now. These are high quality 'casual' games. They're also the ones selling the best. I think that 'casuals' can actually tell a good game from a bad one for the most part.

Casual games don't have to be deep and intricate. Simplicity = mass market appeal. Mass market appeal = lots and lots of money. It's why the Wii is now the equivalent of crack cocaine and every developer is coming out with some idiotic minigame fest, and the Xbox and PS3 are coming out with motion controls to appeal to a greater demographic. Not to mention the overabundance of quicktime events and short single-player campaigns. Sadly, those halcyon days where you could play forever on single-player and then crank out a fun session in multiplayer are at an end.
