Why are 'casual' games bad?

I know that we're fucking tired of Hardcore vs. Casual threads. However, I have a bit of a bone to pick with the folks who bother to call themselves 'hardcore'. They continually say things like "Nintendo's going to die because they only make casual games!" and "Only idiots and old people like casual games!" While I could go on through the whole spiel about Nintendo being the top provider of 'hardcore' titles on the Wii (generally accepted to be a 'casual' console), but I won't because A) nobody will listen, and B) that isn't what I'm talking about. People assume that a game being 'casual' means that it's bad. Why is that? I like the Wii Sports games, I intend to pick up Wii Fit+ due to the fun I had with the original and I even liked Wii Music (for a few minutes, anyway). What's the problem with 'casual' games? I will accept that there are many bad 'casual' games out there, but there are even more and even worse 'hardcore' games also. So what is the problem?

They aren't bad. They just are geared towards a certain audience and I don't particularly like them.

I don't like sports or sports games, but I don't consider them bad games.

Its when casual gamers call themselves actual gamers is when I get pissed.

They're just a bit dull really, all there is to say about it. Great if you're on a bus or a train and you have to keep a bit of yourself focused on what stop you're at. But if I was going to sit and play a game at home for fun and not just kill time I'd play something with lots of bullets and fire.

Because people are insecure and need something to rail against in an attempt to justify their own vices.

There's nothing wrong with casual games themselves.

Meh, to me someone who is a "hardcore" gamer is someone who picks up a controller more than once in awhile. While a casual gamer would be someone who, well, games casually. Picking up a controller in their spare time when they have nothing else to do.

Or at least that's how I classify them in my head. The console owned or games played matters not.

Lower quality games for the same price as a decent game?

No thanks.

I refuse to support that. Nintendo are dead to me.

I can say this: In my opinion, most casual games I've played suck.
Same with me - not all are bad (I'm a sucker for Peggle) but the amount of utter shite the Wii gets is astonishing.

Why? What makes them less of a gamer than you?
Its not that I'm better than them in any way. Or that I'm above them.

Its just irritating. I can't explain it.

Like when someone has an opinion on something when they've never experienced it before. Like when someone starts babbling on about a movie/book/game that they've never played before yet they go on like they know all about it.

Sort of like this ****:

She has no clue what the hell she's talking about but she says it anyway to fit in with the crowd.

Its the same when casual gamers start spouting shit about how they're hardcore gamers though all they play is Wii Fit.

They aren't always bad. As a matter of fact, I enjoy many of them. I consider myself a hardcore gamer, yet Peggle is kick-ass.

More casual gamers = more casual games. If a buttload of people buy games like Wiisports resort, developers realize that they can make a mint with half the effort. So they begin to churn out easier, less inovative games because they know casual gamers will buy them. They continue to milk the cash cow and begin to reach out to more famous titles as they seek even more money. Soon, bastardized versions of our most beloved characters reach the market in games easy enough for Hellen Kellar to beat.

So to put it simply, casual games and gamers corrupt the market from within and generally screw things up for the rest of us.

Does that answer your question?

The main irritant for me that stems from casual games is a seemingly increasing attitude of developers and writes of "that's good enough" and thier willingness to push absolute shit games into the market. Developers like Gearbox (Borderlands), BioWare (Dragon Age, Mass Effect, ect), Blizzard (Starcraft, Diablo, Warcraft) and Bethesda (Oblivion, Fallout 3) that are willing to go the extra mile to ensure that they produce quality entertainment are getting to be a rare breed. More and more companies are adopting a "milk it till it bleeds and dies" attitude towards thier games, for example Infinity Ward and that steaming pile of goat shit that has become Call of Duty. Electornic Arts is also criminally guilty of perpetuating shit game franchises (Madden, Medal of Honor, others) while letting potentially amazing projects wither and die.

R.I.P. Ensemble Studios, your magic will be missed. I know it's been a year, but damnit!
