Apparently someone hadn't realised that Alex has been a girls name for centuries.
It went Alex, Bonnie, Colin, Danielle, so I'm guessing it was -der, rather than -dra.

Did i ask for your opinion?
NO!

Now begone, i have much to ponder and make threads about.

Disclaimer: This was sarcastic, do not take this seriously.
I need to say this since the Escapist is as good with sarcasm as i am with people.
Why can't you read it in my voice!?
(that was also sarcastic, andi hate myself for doing this disclaimer)
I hate the internet for the fact that a disclaimer is even necessary. One would think the use of the term 'begone' would give it away, but alas, no.

Edit: see also 'IMO'. It's sad that i have to say that so much, unfortunately i do. Isn't it just a given that my post is just my opinion?

And in answer of the OPs question its just an existing naming convention, theres some sort of weather phenomena that is named after men, I just can't remember what.
I don't know how you missed the, approximately 4 or 5, correct answers but managed to see that one. It baffles the mind.

As others have said, it alternates between male and female names and they are named in alphabetical order.

Adam
Betty
Carl
Daisy
Edward
Francesca
George
Hillary
Iain
Jessica
Keegan
Leanne
Michael
Norah
Oliver
Patricia
Quinn
Rebecca
Samuel
Tracey (Darwin anyone?)
What the fuck name starts with U?

Anyway, you get the point, I assume they skip some letters, like X or Z but you know what I'd getting at.

Cyclone (opposite of a Hurricane, it goes the opposite way because it lives in the southern hemisphere) Larry destroyed a massive amount of property and crop damage in Far North Queensland, Australia a number of years back.

But you're correct, the more publicised Hurricanes and Cyclones tend to have been females. It's merely a coincidence.

Is it me or did they miss a great oppertunity for Bonnie and Clyde?

They're not. As as already been stated, they alternate between male and female names going in alphabetical order. So if this one has a female name the next one will have a male name.

EVERY OTHER HURRICANE IS GIVEN A MALE NAME. Including Hurricane Alex.

I thought cyclone naming convention was pretty much common knowledge, apparently it's not.
It is in Australia. We learned it in Primary (elementary) school.

Then again, I lived in the Northern Territory for about 6 years and weathered about 3 cyclones.

One of which was called Hamish. He was the largest one worth mentioning while I was there.

The two places I've lived have been New England and Florida, two of the most hurricane-prone place in the US, it's sort of sad that more people aren't familiar with it here.

Originally they were but to avoid sexism they were changed to add male names in 1979.

Also, the reason for it was meteorologists would say "Because they're HER-icanes, not HIS-icanes!"
No that is not me pulling a bad pun out of my bum, that is the real reason.

To answer OP's question, every other hurricane is given a male name:

The87Italians said:
They're named in alphabetical order. Everytime theres a new storm, they go up a letter

Arlene
Bret
Cindy
Don
Emily
Franklin
Gert
Harvey
Irene
Jose
Katia
Lee
Maria
Nate
Ophelia
Philippe
Rina
Sean
Tammy
Vince
Whitney
If you look at that, you can see that there are male names on there (Bret, Don, Franklin and so on) so not ALL hurricanes are named after women.

I also feel compelled to set something else straight:

Boats ow sorry ships are also named after women.
Planets and asteroids in our solar system are named after figures of greek/roman myths.
so many things to google.
While true that all the planets are named that way don't mistake the fact that not all MOONS are. The moons of Uranus are named after characters from plays by Shakespeare and Alexander Pope. The minor (that means small) moons of Saturn are named after figures from Inuit, Gallic and Norse myth. Asteroids are named by their discoverers, and though many of them are named after Greek/Roman myths not all are (793 Arizona, 691 Lehigh as two specific examples).

And boats and ships are named after whatever someone wants to name them. Many sailors are men and they like to give them female names for.....whatever reason (because they can get inside them? hehe) but if ALL ships are named after women how do you explain US Navy ships? Many of them are named after states, places and former Presidents and whatnot. Many naval ships for other nations are named after historic figures/places too.

New England get Hurricanes??? Wow. Mind = Blown. You're a little far from the equator for that kind of weather aren't you?

I can see Florida, it's essentially the US's equivalent to where I'm from in Australia. It makes sense. But New Englands like all Massachusetts and Maine and that right? You guys get snow and everything. Wow, I thought it was a tropics only thing.

I suppose Hurricanes don't mind the cold whereas Cyclones tend to be all about the warm sun and beaches. (We tend to get most of them in Summer.)
