Most people aren't, its just the assholes stand out and make themselves heard, basically, all an asshole is is someone trying to bring attention onto themselves, so just ignore them.

People aren't assholes, individuals are assholes, being "an asshole" is not a symptom of the human race, it's something an individual chooses to do.

Only problem is that a lot of people choose to be assholes because it's really quite easy.
Personally, I try my best to not just go around pissing people off and I actually can't understand those that do.

I know how you feel dude, I posted on a friends status and this other friend of his started being an ass to me. My friend is an Atheist and this other dude is an Atheist so he starts just openly insulting me and my religion even though he doesn't know shit and starts calling me terrorist and other things. He can't really say anything to you unless you are posting on your friend Melanie's wall or whatever. Just ignore him, best thing you can do unless he goes to your school.

I've been thinking that maybe we should be mean on the outside. To those that we know or want to know we're still nice, but that's an exception to the rule. You see if we're rude to strangers they can be justified assholes. They have something to complain about and they have an excuse to be mean. In a way you're letting them enjoy life even more. (I'm dead serious.)

Alright, so I was on Facebook tonight, and an acquantance of mine (named Melanie) posts in her status that she is watching District 9. I like that movie, so I post a comment on it.

Immediatly this guy, named Nick, starts calling me gay. And for no reason. I have never done anything wrong to this guy, yet he sees it fit to make fun of me and call me names and stuff. And it is kind of pissing me off.

Now, let me set the context here: I'm smart, shy to people I don't know, and a massive nerd. He is pretty much the polar opposite: dumb, ripped, and constant;y being a douche to everybody, butting in where he isn't wanted. a stereotypical jock (we are in highschool btw).

Alright so here is my question: we are people such douche bags? Seriously, I have been playing this flame war smart. and he looks like a total asshole. So I mean what is the point? Why do people do this shit?

If anyone has any comments, please post them.

If your name is Threx, then check Melanies Facebook. You'll see what I'm talking about.

Just ignore him. I catch shit from people all the time, especially where I work. Some people are just jonesing for attention, and all they know how to do is be a prick. Just leave it alone, and he'll get off of it.

After all, he looks like a git acting like that anyway, and nobody is going to think any less of you because of what one dude says on Facebook.

You answered your own question, but I'll contribute.

I swear to you that the reason they are like this is because they're life is a "bowl of dicks." They hate things about themselves so they punish you. They think it's funny because they're immature. I'd say you just ignore him because people like him are exactly like people who say marijuana doesn't do any bodily harm, driving using a cell phone is safe, and their religion is THE ONE RELIGION TO RULE THEM ALL.

In all honesty, being a dick is alright. I'm a dick to people I see. For example, when "Douchebag" decides he wants to yell at my friend working at Gamestop because he didn't understand his poorly worded question then I put my foot down. I tell "Douchebag," "he's a worthless ************ that doesn't need to share the same air I breathe because he's the shit I wipe off my shoe." =]

And if they have kids, it's even funnier. None of their threats can be taken seriously (I've never been beaten up in my life!! Woot!) because they know that the law doesn't favor drunken idiots who don't bathe daily.

People don't need to be dicks to other people. Customer service jobs are the worst because there are way too many assholes.

Some people do that to feel big. I suggest ignoring him completely, not acknowledging his existence whatsoever. Sure, you'll get a few attacks at first, but later he'll get bored and realize that your not worth his time if you do nothing.

I like... I like A LOT.

Anyways, the guy's being a dick because he wants attention. You've already said he's a "jock". Well, speaking from a psychological standpoint most jocks are attention seeking because they are really good at ONE thing and one thing only; and generally suck at everything else. Additionally, they usually see everything as a competition to be won because of the "sports culture" that they've been brought up in.

Medically speaking, he probably has an over-active Hypothalamus gland which produces an excessive amount of Major urinary proteins (Mups) and that, in turn leads to aggressiveness. Also, studies have shown that reduced activity in his pre-frontal cortex can lead to violent anti-social behavior.

Or some mix of the two.

Sadly, he's very likely to breed at a young age and not be able to "fit in" socially after high school unless he gets a college scholarship or joins the military. And if he ends up breeding while in high school, that very likely eliminates the college option. On top of all that, there is a high likely hood of him harboring feelings of resentment or anxiety over his perceived social ineptitude that stand a good chance of manifesting themselves violently against his life partner. Any way you cut it, I feel sorry for the mother and child.

It's the internet and people do that. I believe Penny Arcade summarizes it best.

Yep. Pretty much ninja'd.

But even in real life, I think people are such assholes because it used to be wink-wink legal to slug a guy if he was being a dick, but now we're all hyper-whiny little bitches about the slightest act of violence. There's no check on human behavior, so even without anonymity the Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory is just becoming the Greater Fuckwad Theory.

Its actually a disease, a very smart disease. It realized that no matter how good at killing people a disease was, it was always cured or overextends itself. But an Asshole Disease, well, people might not even notice it, no one would look for a cure and no one would care, it would spread via rage, especially over the internet. No one would question it because the disease makes people defend it with philosophical reasons. Until it just lets everyone kill everyone else for it !

But seriously, minorities are rising of all kinds, people are just making them up because it works, and everyone wants 'equality' and they want 'respected' no matter what they think or do or value, if they collect dead animals off the road and having them stuffed in naughty positions, its every bit as much of a real and respectable hobby as gardening or shooting birds. Kind of reminds me of all the crazy lawsuits that go around.

That the amazing thing about the Internet- He abuse you, you abuse him back. As you say, he is dumb and therefore easy to abuse.

Find what he likes and torment it. He likes Slipnot, calls them gay. He like the raiders, say they are the gaiders.

I think that would ultimately prove to be counter-productive. Whether in real life or on Facebook, the best way to deal with him is still the same, "Don't feed the Trolls."

I second this.

But outside the internet, it probably has something to do with looking cool or a trait in ones personality.
