Why are people so stupid?

I wake up this morning and go online, looking for the reviews of recent movies. I notice Grown Ups 2 has a 95% 'want to see' ratio with the public. I check the comments and see things like "Adam Sandler is so funny lol can't wait for this one." Thinking this is a fluke, I go to the movie theater. A massive crowd swarms the place for Grown Ups 2, including a family with several small kids (have fun explaining that deer urine scene, parents) and maybe 20 people in the line with me for Pacific Rim.

While I'm waiting I see a commercial over the concession stand for the Xbox One. 'As if it's not already a lost cause', were my exact words I watch the movie and come home, then look on the internet. A suggested page from Target grabs my eye as it shows a PS4 and an Xbox One on the cover. The subtitle: 'The only hard part is having to choose.'

Before I jump to conclusions, I remember Target is a soulless company trying to sell more and would hardly know about the turmoil going on. Really not their fault, when you get down to it. Then I check the comments. 66 likes: 'Um its obvious Xbox PS4 will suck because I had a PS3 and it sucked.' 25 likes: 'PS4: cheap & poor people. Xbox: Classy, wealthy gamers.'

Why? How are there so many of these people? I mean, I'm used to a smug sense of superiority, but this brings me no joy. To see a great many people clearly taking the wrong, torturously worse path just brings me down. The Honey Boo Boo generation is still here, and they're not getting any brighter. Let's hope none of them ever end up with nuclear missiles or something.

EDIT: All right, this is probably a bit harsh. I have a bad habit of judging other people (like I said, I've got that smug sense of superiority going on), and it may have gone too far. I welcome open discussion, too; if they had good, justifiable reasons, I probably would've debated them, but thought no less of them afterwards. However, most of the people I saw had absolutely no reasons to support their ideas. (Actual quote: 'Well its not cheaper because you have to buy the PS Eye and that's $100.') And yes, in some cases this sort of anger falls perfectly into the 'stop liking what I don't like' category. Grown Ups 2 is not one of these areas. It's basically pattern recognition at this point.

Alright, forget OP's dribble of "I'm so much smarter than these plebs", let's change the subject.

I haven't seen Pacific Rim yet, is it any good? Should I wait for it to come cheap at the end of my street, or go out now and watch it at a slightly higher price?

Dr. Tippy2k2 recommends that you take two chill pills and see if it clears up by tomorrow morning.

Yes, Grown Ups looks like a terrible movie. Yes, the Xbox One seems to be doing everything in it's power to convince me not to purchase it. However, people can like what they want...even if what they like is a piece of dog doo on a stick.

I guaran-damn-tee that there are entertainment choices that you have that would cause me to question your intelligence (just as there is certainly something I like entertainment-wise that would have you question my intelligence). Liking something does not make you stupid.

Yes, very. It's the most fun I've ever had from a movie. Also, sorry I was so vehement about my hatred, but I can't think of one reason why the Xbox One should succeed. It was very nearly the worst thing to happen in the gaming industry ever - that's not something you can forgive and forget.

I would agree with you, for in some cases there's no problem with it. For example, there's still some people who genuinely like the Michael Bay Transformers movies. They'll go watch the 4th one when it comes out, and I could care less. But in some cases, it's actively harmful to the world. As long as Sandler's grossly unfunny movies keep making money, he - a genuinely good actor - will put less and less effort into each one, thus wasting his talent. And the Xbox One was almost the worst thing to ever happen to the games industry in ages. If it managed to win after all the horrible things it did, that would create a horrible example for the rest of the industry. I don't mind people doing stupid things, but if it hurts the rest of us, then that is problematic.

Then I guess my question here is this:

Why do you get to decide what's "good" and what's "bad" for the industries?

You just stated that Transformers is a good series. I 100% disagree with that and I think that Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon is one of the worst movies to have ever been crapped out of Hollywood. Why is it then OK for Transformers to make money and not Grown Ups? Both are incredibly terrible movies so why does one get to exist and the other one doesn't? Because in your opinion, one is really really bad while the other one is just kind of bad?

Does what I'm saying make sense? I hope so...

I get that it sucks to see people not educate themselves and/or just like really awful things (since I'm sure as you've noticed, I 100% agree with both of your assessments so hopefully I'm not coming off too harsh here) but if people enjoy X, let them enjoy X. If they want my opinion, they will get it but otherwise let them have their fun.

Er, yes, that show came out in the last year or so, didn't it?

(As an aside, isn't that show about laughing at poor people? Are you saying poor people are stupid, or people who laugh at poor people are stupid?)

...

However, in general I agree with you. OTOH, most people seem to think that most (or at least too many) people are stupid, just that the majority of those put themselves in the other category.

But doing a little bit of research about something before pontificating about it seems to be beyond most people. OTOH, that's only important if you actually care at all about it.

Can't speak for the second Transformers movie since I didn't see it, but the other two were pretty good, regardless of what overtly nostalgic fans may think.

As for the Xbox One, I can't say I saw anything wrong with what they were trying to do. All the DRM would have been publisher specific(something PC gamers already deal with)and internet is rarely a problem for most people who intend to use it either for multiplayer or the tv services.

People just like to make a big fuss over nothing.

I agree people are very stupid, and unless you're a typing dog, you're included in that OP. And you to random person reading this you are as well, as am I. Deal with it.

Aw :(

Anyway, I find people are simply inconsiderate or lacking empathy rather than stupid, whether consciously or unconsciously. Many people are too wrapped up in their own lives, to adequately reflect on things.

Seems like a flame war thread that never took off to me. Why don't you just stop thinking about this? Is it really that big of a problem that you can't just get over it?
