Why Are People Willfully Ignorant?

I am in high school, and all my short life I have considered myself smart. Not Eistein smart, just a bit above the average. I often liek to question things. Just kind of who I am. But lately there is a question that has been slowly growing in the back of my mind: Why are people so goddamn stupid and ignorant?

I don't mean people with a low IQ or a disability. I mean your regular, everyday, bleached blonde dumb whore. I see them every freakin day, and I always wonder why? I chose to believe that everybody is born at (roughly) the same level of intelligence. So why are there so many dumb stereotypical Jocks and Blondes? It's not even that they're dumb, they're just ignorant. They don't see anything past there little bubble involving their BFF's and OC. Why? Like am I the only person who sees the value of getting their head out of their ass? The other day in my civics class we were talking about how sports are valued so much over smarts, and somebody(another stereotypical girl) said "Who cares about being smart? It's pretty much worthless." Honnestly? Nobody even argued that point.

And for the most part it's true. People go through years and years of school just to have thousands of dollars of debt that they magicaly have to pay off. Meanwhile, Johnny nobody goes straight to work and does almost aswell as the guy who spent all this time getting educated. What the fuck?

So here is my question to you guys (actualy, I have 2):
1-When did being a dipshit become cool? And how the fuck did we let that happen?
2-Why doesn't society honour those who do well, get educated, ect?

I'm shure this topic has been done before, but I would still like you guys to go for constructive critisms, not trolling me. Otherwise, post away.

Because "all the cool kids are doing it", perhaps?

For what it's worth, I value wit, smarts and intelligence over looks and popularity (in fact, popularity actually scores points AGAINST a girl, in my opinion)

I'm going to say it's a cultivated media image. It's who our society idolizes, and who is seen as a figure to emulate.

Precisely, especially in high school.

OT: Just wait it out man, when you get into your college years and upward into your 20's the image of what is cool or favorited becomes a mish mash. I know alot of really cool people that weren't in the popular crowd in high school. However I also know alot of people that were apart of that crowd but no longer suscribe to those thoughts and ideas and could care less how popular they are. It's just a sign of immaturity and ignorance, they will learn or be delivering your pizzas for the rest of their lives.

1. No, I'm pretty sure being cool is still in relation of how similar one is to Batman. And as far as I know, stupid dipshits are very un-Batman like.

2. Society doesn't honor the educated, it doesn't value the diligent, it rewards the lucky.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
the US has had this weird anti-intellectualism to it for awhile, we value football players more then scientists. I would guess it started creeping in after Darwins origin of species before that science was bringing neat things but nothing that really challenged thinking of the genral public but suddenly you have something that explains how life changes and where we come from that challanges traditional religions belief so suddenly science became a boogy man that some ppl were more then happy to try and get rid of. Altho I suppose also the nuke doesnt help it since that showed just the sheer power that science could unleash, if instead of a bomb it had been a power plant things might be diffrent but who knows.

Yahtzee!

I'm not sure where the anti-intellectualism trend started, but I figure it won't stop.
Ever.

It's a vicious cycle.
People see jocks and whores are popular.
People want to be popular.
People become jocks and whores.

Cycle repeats.
Endlessly.
Hopefully natural selection will do it's thing and all of the dumb whores/jocks will be dead before humanity becomes a lost cause (if it hasn't become one already).

That line is well said but you also left out fighting in the military and pumping my gas. :)

I feel like taking the conspiracy theorist side of things right now.

With how I see our government systems run it seems like they want us
to be ignorant and bias. My favorite example is how Republican and
Democrats may hate each other with a romantic passion, but won't acknowledge
the fact how close their parties political agendas are. This creates
the 'us against them' mentality in people. So once a person picks a
side they will use tactics like self deception and conformation bias
in order to continue to believe what they defined as true.

And if you wonder why the government would do such a thing just think,
who is easier to control: Free thinkers who do not affiliate themselves
with any part in order to escape a bias opinion, or a majority of people
who are ignorant and easily mislead.

My good friend, you may be my hero, as I love conspiracy theories. And yes I am aware of this, which is why my rise to power will be softenned by this ignorance. Still a pain in the ass on a day to day basis though

This begs other questions: How do the idols in our society become idols? How do trends change? Do people try to change who they are or do they try to emulate their idols to the tee? For example, meathead jock likes (American) football, meathead hears that favorite quaterback went to an upscale college, does the jock change because he wants people to think he is smart or because he wants to emulate his idol and receive a similar experience?

Who cares? It sounds like you just found out that you are not one of the "cool kids" in high school and want to vent your angst here. In a few years who will never see those "ignorant" people again and will become so fucking jaded with life, like the rest of us, that it doesn't matter anymore.
