Rats, I was gonna say Jo Brand, but you beat me to it!

I'm a woman and generally, there are not that many female stand up comedians to choose from. In terms of comedy in general, not just stand up, you can't go wrong with a bit of French and Saunders, particularly when Dawn French has her own things going on like the Vicar of Dibley.

I mean, someone mentioned Sarah Silverman before and I've seen some of her stuff and I just don't think she's funny. After all, humour is subjective.

My favourite comedian though, has got to be Bill Bailey. He keeps it clean, doesn't swear too much, but is just really funny to me.

Also, why is it funny when men tell dick jokes, but gross when women do it? I just don't understand the logic.

(NB, I'm not saying that I laugh at the dick jokes jokes men tell, I just don't think they're funny in the first place, regardless of the gender of the person telling the joke.)

She is an exception. Sarah Silverman, however, is not. Just compare her to someone like Frankie Boyle and see the difference for yourself.

My reasoning to why there are no "funny female comedians" is that guys have a harder time relating to jokes by women than jokes by men. Men either talk about food, sex, or marriage (there are comedians who specify in other things, like Carlos Mencia, but that's a bad example because he's not funny). Everyone eats, everyone has sex, and both men and women get married. Women often talk about the same things, but they'll talk about what food does to their weight, or dildos, or complain about men. Men tend not to care about what food does to their weight, they tend not to use dildos, and they tend to take criticism worse then woman (unless a woman is in a fight, don't criticize your girlfriend or wife while fighting). Also, sex with women tends to be about all the guys they've had sex with whereas men often mock themselves or speak in general terms, like jokes about their weight in sex or how some people think that nodding their heads a bunch and not moving is having sex. Women can relate to those jokes, but a man doesn't want to hear about a dildo.

Also, every example in there I've heard from a standup comedian.

Being a comedian is about having a core need for attention. Women use their bodies (sometimes unintentionally) to get attention. In short women aren't funny because they have boobs

Men are more prone to do crazy things that are worth noting in their routine.
We also are more likely to have attention-deprived outbursts.

Because most women will willingly watch a male comedian, but some men are too stubborn to enjoy a female's comedy. ...well thats 1 theory at least.
I wouldn't really buy that, at least not for the vast majority of males. I've got a few female friends that are really funny. A lot funnier than any female I've seen on television.

Being a woman, to all the people making sexist jokes, i.e. "I only listen to someone who will jerk me off" "they're only funny cause they have boobs" etc. SHAME ON YOU. You know who you are, you smarmy bastards. No wonder you're single.

Moving on. Many people have mentioned several comediennes in this thread. I think I have one more to add, unless someone else said it: Carol Burnett.

As for why there aren't that many female comedians, being a comedian takes a very outspoken person who is good at public speaking, timing, etc. Several personality profiling tests show that women show greater strengths at nonverbal communications, more intrapersonal stuff (spelling is crap right now). Also, women realize that sometimes telling jokes is not a secure way to make a living. :p I agree with whoever said cultural norms as well.

Here's a question: why aren't there more male nurses or teachers? Same type of thing.

Oh, and I don't think Sarah Silverman is funny either.

Now, I got to go back to MY job before I get in trouble.

Debra Digiovanni is the funniest female comedian I can think of off the top of my head. She is frequently on Video on Trial, she is kind of heavy looking and she makes many fat jokes at herself. She is really clever, and is fun to watch in stand-up as well.

Actually, Nikki Payne pretty funny too, her being a psycho and all. I believe she was in Comedy Inc. and is also on Video on Trial. Most of her stuff is really twisted and you have to have a twisted sense of humor to find her funny, plus she has a speech impediment (or maybe just a strange voice) that she uses to her advantage.

I would put up links, but I can't be bothered to right now. Sorry.

OK to be honest there are a few, like Wanda Sykes, but very few. It seems men dominate the comedy world why is this?
What about Sarah Silverman or Ellen
Just for even thinking about SS you should be banned. Not only from these forums, but anything related to 'fun'. Respect to Ellen however, she's a lb so at least she knows what men are thinking.

Not a single female comedian has ever even came close to ringing the doorbell of the part of my brain which controls my laughter. The reason people 'laugh' about their [female comedians] jokes is either they look cute and act adorable [this does definately not apply to SS] or they make the unevitable sexual-related joke [in which case all men in the audience laugh, because hey, we got hormones too] or because the people laughing are female and feel the need to support their fellow gender.

*Note*
Please do not take the above too serious. Take into consideration that I am a bitter person, with even less humorous content then the aforementioned women, and only the internet to comfort me. I DO support women in their strive to equality with men. I hope no females read this. No I'm not a Republican.

Jo Brand is the only woman comedian I've seen that is even remotely funny, including those on sitcoms.

Edit: No wait hang on, Dawn French is pretty good too. Vicar of Dibley being the prime example.
