The answer is simple really. All you need to do is watch, listen, read, play, and pay attention to the things you think are interesting and share them with others. You can't force people to care about something and you can't force someone to stop caring for something they do care about. It is not a crime to like or dislike something nor should it be.

Also the whole "There is no longer any bastion of intelligence in the media" is way overblown. There are plenty of sources for thoughtful/interesting discussion, news, and so forth. Go find some of them that suit you're interests.

Man, I love xkcd. Every single comic is just pure gold.

OT: Hmmm. Well, it doesn't really matter in the end, does it? Science will keep on being science, scienceing up the world and making it a more scientific place while the rest of the world watches the Kardashians live life. It'll go at it's own pace. The world moves on, an. You don't have to care, I don't have to care, no one has to care. It doesn't really effect anything.

But I will always firmly believe that the Kardashians, the people on Real World, and such shows are actually way, way waaayyy smarter than all of us. Seriously, think about it. Are you being payed thousands of dollars a day to just sort of exist? I didn't think so. The must have something figured out that we don't. I'm on to them...

[small]But Jersey Shore will always be stupid. Always.[/small]
[sub][sub]Also, I don't really think that. So calm down.[/sub][/sub]

Eh, way back when, when hating Justin Bieber was at its height, I'd be constantly coming across people who'd say they were sick of hearing about him. For several months, this was all I knew of him, people would shut up about how bad it was that people wouldn't shut up about him.

To this day I've heard that he's young, Canadian, sung some songs, one had a clip with a traffic light, there might have been a scandal with some US girl...and many many people complaining about how terrible it is to have to hear about him.

...

My point is, you seem to have media sensations built around people complaining they shouldn't be media sensations.

yeah... im a christian, and as a result of that, i've met far too many "zealots" if thats what you call them. they say im the devil incarnate trying to infiltrate the ranks of god when i tell them they're the exact reason people hate our religion and what it turns people into: retards.

Spending too much time reacting to what the masses do is a sure way to give yourself an unneeded headache and be dragged down to their level. However, complete apathy to the world and life itself, as many posters have been suggesting, is not the answer either.

Concern yourself with how one *should* live and strive to live that way. Refuse to buy into the poison as best you can.

So... should I be proud of the fact that I still don't know who the Kardashians are?

All I know is that they have money and people hate them.

I feel for you younger pups. You haven't had the time to realize that every generation asks those questions. Why is everyone so stupid? Why aren't we better people? Why do people watch/read that stuff? The answer is plain and simple. We are people and soon you will be one of them also.

But no you might say. I will never do that. Each generation finds its own version of stupidity and moral decay to relish in. So you don't like reality TV? What about your fetish for memes? Yes they are cool and nifty now but wait, just wait. The next generation that is being formed right now (yes older people have sex) will hate them and call them stupid and wonder why anyone would think them funny or cute and you old fogies will still be putting memes on everything oblivious to the fact that you are no longer hip or cool. That very fact right there will make young people depressed and wonder how the world got into the shape it did and what can be done about it. Then someone will come up with a catch phrase like 'I don't want to live in this quadrant anymore,' or 'I took a laser to the ass,' and you as an older person will be going but but but but...

Its the cycle of life.

There are so many idiots because there are so many PEOPLE. It's a target rich environment and DUH moments increase exponentially the bigger populations get. Since the human race is in the billions, the duh-factor is currently leveling at KA-DUH, a few steps under "This planet won't be LIVABLE anymore".

agreed. I never count myself among the intelligent because I doubt the people we believe are stupid think themselves to be imbeciles. To many in this world I probably seem ignorant but I certainly don't see myself that way. I always just assume myself the dumbest person in the room because it's always more satisfying to receive unanticipated compliments and I won't make an ass of myself if I am the dumbest.

People who take the opposite route annoy the hell out of me because I feel they're underestimating the rest of us.

Cause most everyone despite what seems like good intentions are only doing x for their own gain. Not that they mean ill harm most of the time.

Humans are intolerant due to centuries of it. The media, politics and typically right winged religion perpetuates the problem.

People are stupid cause they are, and its only gona get worse cause the older generation got the idea of shielding their children from the horrors of life that they may never experience the troubles they went through. What they fail to realize though is that it just sets them up for bigger and harder falls. I could also add on about 500 reasons to all of these but I don't like to type to much as I've said to much already.....

I must go now. My hate bunker needs an occupant to man it as my hatedar is picking up activity. Good day.

This.
There's something about the entire student body of Yale law students singing "Friday" at a formal dance that makes one realize that there is little behavior that is exclusive to people of a specific mental capacity.

Also, the internet is probably the best humanity has ever had in terms of the wealth of human knowledge being widely available. And the media of the past wasn't exactly filled with bastions of intelligence.

In fact, OP, you should probably stop for a moment and realize how fucking amazing the world as is can be right now. I mean, cell phones are honest-to-God space calculator communicator face-phone canvas virtual-world data accessor everything devices that make great flashlights, to boot. Available right now, to a huge portion of the population of your society.
HOW IS THAT NOT THE MOST AWESOME THING EVER?!

I find it highly suspicious (and not to mention unlikely) that you two would bring up the words "bastion" and "calamity" by coincidence... IT'S A CONSPIRACY, I TELL YOU!

OT: I feel you, bro. I feel you hard.
Everyone feels me hard, I'm just that sexy.

Not just the news, reality tv and the like. Why are entire families of dumbasses like the kardashians given so much admiration and publicity?
In the 16th century, some of the most popular forms of entertainment were bear-baiting, bull-baiting, cock-fights, dog-fights, and public executions. Shakespeare's Globe was one of the few theaters that didn't have to rent out space to blood sports in order to stay afloat. Because a guy with a bull and a few vicious dogs drew a far more reliable crowd than even the best play.

People are people. They find weird things entertaining. And this is never going to change.

I know right. but the problem is media sensation about how terrible media sensations are are themselves terrible. if you stay quite you'll constantly have to listen to everyone else talk about how horrible Justin Beiber is,
and if you take the opposite approach, trying to convince everyone that Justin Beiber sucking sucks, everyone will agree with you and just how much Justin Beiber's suckiness sucks will form a media sensation.
its like the optical illusion with the circle of stairs. you can run uphill or downhill, but it won't get you anywhere.

Your view of the world is precluded on the notion that you are better then everybody and that the world is burning because it is full of people who are dumb and below you. That's not exactly a clear view of the world and even if it was its horribly conceded. My suggestion is that you learn to live with it because the world isn't changing (or go into politics and maybe change something).
I'm not better than everyone, just the entire kardashian family and the cast of The only way is essex. The world is "Burning" because the stupid people are numerous and the greedy people have figured out a sytem that fucks people over and then makes them thankful for it.
