I guess it's just easier to rape a pre-existing IP than create a new one. Video games are falling into that too, not necessarily with remakes (yay arcade) but with sequelitis.

if you make a new film, you risk losing millions of dollars. but if you make a new film that is a remake of an old film that was very successful, you are almost assured to make money.

They are remaking Red Dawn? Awesome. We need a good Reagan-era ass-kicking movie. There has been a noticeable drought in them since the last Rambo.

Unless they change it to be the Chinese or North Koreans to make it more timely. Then I'll just be sad.

Along with those remakes I'm getting tired of all the reboots that keep happening. Spider-Man and Superman are both getting reboots within a four year period. Shouldn't movie execs wait at least a little while for the bad taste of the last movie to get out of the public's mouth before shoving a new one in?
There's a reason for this, Marvel want a Spiderman reboot becuase the others where really bad films and they want a good Spiderman film for The Avengers film. With the Superman reboot, DC are making a Justice League film so they want a decent new Superman film.

P.S. Superman Returns was one of the most god awful films I have ever seen.
That's not true Marvel doesn't own the rights to the spiderman movies.

I really wont complain until they decide to remake the Back to the Future movies, then they will have to die.

Red Dawn remake has a possibility to be good, because it's Red Dawn. You can't really make it bad; it's so good
Seriously? Red Dawn was good? Maybe as a comedy example of the Shatner style of overacting compared with paranoia like propaganda from the height of the US-USSR cold war.
Red Dawn is the greatest movie ever made and the only people that think otherwise are pinko commies, you pinko commie

Eh. Remakes don't bother me, for one thing, I don't have to watch them, and they just may introduce people to the original.

Well it is not a lack of new ideas, but the safety found in old ones. They know people will spend money to see the shitty remake, and will turn a profit. They have to gamble on new ideas.
This is pretty much it. It's also similar to why movies like "Epic Movie" kept being made. No original content, cheap to film (In the case of those Crappy Movies) an people would watch them.

Oh. There also making an 'Indian Jones 5' and a 'Terminator 5.'
These films will be out 2011-2012 along with a lot of other shit and some hopefully good movies.
You need to do a little more digging than just looking at dates on imdb.com, it's not the most up to date on these things. First of all, the company that owns the terminator rights haven't even given permission to the company that is trying to make it yet. And second there isn't even a story idea, let alone a script for a new Indiana Jones movie. If we see either of these before summer 2013, if at all, I'll eat my keyboard.

I have no high hopes for The Thing. They're gonna tone it way the hell down to go for a 12 rating so there'll be no iconic scenes like this;

And even if they don't tone it down, which would be a bloody miracle in itself, there's no way it'd be anywhere near as good as the original.

I do agree that neither of those movies need ever be made though.

They're remaking Conan the Barbarian? What the fuck hollywood. And Red Sonja too? Wow talk about scrapping the bottom of the barrel. Those movies have a certain epic quality to them that I just don't see them replicating properly today.

And another Mad Max apparently... Apparently we got beyond thunderdome.

And holy shit they're remaking Troll. What the Hell Hollywood. That movie was terrible (but hilarious to watch) why are you subjecting us to it again.

Combine the weird remakes with the sheer amount of sequels and the next few years look a little bleak.

Edit: why is this guy Conan!!!!

Seriosuly this is Conan:

AND HE IS NOT AMUSED!
Because he's Ronon fucking Dex!
That's why!

Seriously though, I've seen him act and I think he could pull it off.

The fact they're remaking Total Recall, a 20 year old movie that I thought was fantastic is ridiculous.

Films have existed for less than a hundred years and we're already dry of fresh ideas? I can understand remaking some movies perhaps with up-to-date special effects, but I mean jeez, they just seem to be ruining a lot of classics these days.

Imo the worst crime is remaking Stieg Larssons 'Millenium Trilogy' the original 3 films are very good and far more faithful to the source material than anything that hollywood will churn out...

Why are they remaking great films into what most probaly will be shit? Seriously My favourite horror film of all time 'The Thing' is being remade and there also remaking another great film 'Red Dawn' and a remake of 'Total Recall' a film that was only good because of Arnie. I don't understand it, do directors and writers actual not have any new ideas!?

:/

I know it's a silly thing to be pissed off about but I am. lol. Anyway discuss, give your views blah blah blah.

EDIT: The new 'The Thing' is a prequel... Still completly unnecessary and there's a big chance it will be very shit.

John Carpenter's the Thing has been for many years my favorite horror film perhaps favorite film period. The fact they are doing a prequel has pissed me off since the day I heard about it.
