I don't think in that way. I like things based off of my personal experiences with them, and not whether or not someone else decides they are "cool" or not. I loved Half-Life and most of its sequels and other games that use the Source engine (TF2, Counter-strike, etc), but I did not like Left 4 Dead when I tried it out. I loved MW1, but I seriously despise MW2, if only for the community of the latter that screws up an otherwise decent game. I loved Fallout 3 for its setting and story, but I also disliked Dragon Age because of its setting and story. I'll even admit that I had alot of fun playing WoW, and yet that game receives a rather heavy amount of hate for its "popularity".

My point is... when it comes to hobbies, I only care about my opinion. Other people can think what they like, but my likes and dislikes are purely formulated from my personal opinions based off of personal experience.

From my experience, once a game or movie becomes popular with "regular people" others who consider themselves as better than the general public instantly consider it akin to the antichrist. For example, popular series such as Halo and Modern Warfare are among the most frequently bashed games on sites such as the escapist. I for one think that this cultural phenomenon occurs because of an anti conformist attitude that runs deep within the hardcore gaming niche. It all comes down to certain individuals not wanting to accept anything mainstream in my opinion.

My question is: what do you guys think?
Halo has always been crap. It wouldn't matter if it was popular or not.

CoD was great up to MW. I've played all of the CoD's except The Big Red One. WaW was meh, but at least it had MW tech back in WW2. MW2 was just bad. Again, popularity doesn't mean a thing in my opinion here.

I love playing games where it's easy to find a game. I love playing WoW, and it's one of the most popular games in the world. I adore Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9, and 10. I enjoy RE4. I like Starcraft.

people do that just so they can be different and have something to brag about. They like it and then when everybody else starts to like it they hate it

I'm no longer sure exactly what we're talking about at this point but here are my theories on popularity affecting this sort of thing.
1. people hating something for legitimate reasons who are annoyed by crazy fans screaming how awesome it is
2. fighting back against the idolatry that can form around some popular things
3. those popular a**holes ruin everything they touch and people fight back simply because it's popular (as a nerd I know this first hand)
4. what starts out as a petty dislike grows into a patriotic war from getting fired up by the other people.

it could be any combination of these things. you know how it is.

I think it has to do with the popularity of the game linking into the people who either aren't fans of it because they don't like it, and want some attention so they voice their opinions louder than normal, or the trolls who bash it because they want the spotlight

I like what I like because that's who I am, but people out there do things for the attention, whether or not their being yelled at for it, it's still attention, like in Robot Chicken, when the nerd thinks about being an "incredibly sexy lady", gets rubbed on by women, then when he's being beaten up says 'it's still skin on skin contact, whoopie!", it's still attention to them
