Have you ever noticed how defensive people get about music? If you make fun of someones favorite color or movie or food they'll just say whateverfloats your boat or something like that. Make fun of their favorite music however and they'll launch into a flurry of defensive arguements and reasons for why its so awesome and how you should fall in love with it. Any theories on why this is?

Because when people do make an argument against say, metal. They just say well it's just a bunch of guys growling and noise dur-hur. The fact that it is a terrible argument is why we get defensive, some asshole just presumes so much about your music that you love.

Because sometimes, music reflects people's beliefs. People don't like you insulting their beliefs. I don't care, though.

I get defensive when someone insults me for liking Country or Soft Rock, even just Rock. Its just that people will insult you for no reason, thats why we get so defensive.

Now saying that I would just like to point this out, I hate Rap and MOST people that listen to it, why, because ALSMOST everyone that listens to it is a 9-16 year old fagget that thinks there cool becaudse it has swears every 5 seconds. Now I'm not saying everyone is like this, its just that the only people that I see listeing to it are people that I hate, or someone who looks like there going to shank me. I just don't understand why people want to listen to people talking and swearing.

No offence if you like the genra, but everyone that I've seen so far is like that, studies show that what kind of music you listen to reflects yourself, so when i hear rap I don't want to be anyware near it.

You're listening to the wrong kind of rap. While I dislike the "Gangsta Rap", there are some other rap artist that make songs with REAL lyrics and a message.

Because them saying my music is bad is them trying to force their view of my music onto me. These are always the type of poeple that assume everyone has to like what they like, and can't accept people that make different choices.

We get defensive because they don't understand what we see in it. So dissing our music is like dissing all that we consider "good."

Look up 'Cigarettes' by Fort Minor (or the lyrics to it). Used to have your view and it was at least a bit eye-opening for me, and still is one of the main reasons why I can respect some rappers.

As for on-topicness... I think it depends who you're talking to. I can imagine a metalhead being defensive about his music because his music is completely misunderstood and everybody has some kind of prejudice about it - if that'd happen to something you like you'd get sick and defensive about it as well. On the other hand, people who listen to electric easy listening music (Daft Punk for example) I find generally aren't defensive about their music at all and simply couldn't care less what people say about it; they just listen it to relax.

People keep saying that music relfects your beliefs, etc... but it DOESN'T. It can, but that's now how it really speaks to us. Music reflects an unconscious part of our minds that is directly relevent to what we find beautiful or at least pleasing or interesting. This is why we are so defensive of it, is because its connections to us are at a deep level we don't even fully understand.

I actually enjoyed Eminem's (believe it or not) song Superman a lot. It has a good tune and the lyrics actually have a message. It's a good song though I don't listen to Eminem otherwise. Supreme, maybe you should give that song a shot.

I'm not particularly defensive about my own, but I'm mightily OFFENSIVE about The Kings of Leon.

No. Well I am, but not to people who like them. I hate getting into music 'debates'. How can there be a winner?!

Not so much with metal in my case but the same logic applies. People will often judge others music based upon their own ideas of what it is rather than what it truly is.

For example: Rap. All rap I have heard is misogynistic, racist (to non-blacks really) and extremely unimaginative. The thing is, I have not heard a lot of rap artists, so for me to say all rap is like that would be extremely unfair and I could understand why Rap fans would feel defensive about it.

In my case it's that most people try and tell me what music I should/do like based upon their own misinformed beliefs. Like when I try and explain that Marilyn Manson is as Goth as Linkin Park.

2 years ago my mom was diagnosed with terminal cancer then shorty after that my uncle black mailed my dad over our house. I was beyond feeling bad, i wanted someone else to get hurt and was very angry and almost knocked out my uncle when i saw him. The only things that helped me was music and drugs which i started using. I am better now and thats all behind me, but i still feel like pink floyd helped me and that is why i defend it.

That's because 'colour' and 'film' are singular. 'Genre' of music represents a pretty huge portion of the music they probably listen to.

If you said 'You like comedy films? God, most are shit' then you'd probably get the 'flurry of defensive arguements'. Likewise, saying that a single song they like is bad will probably nab you the 'whatever floats your boat' thing.

It's all about size and scope - I hope you get me!
