Why are we so defensive about our music?

I used to be defensive about my music. not so much any more, and no way defensive on these forums!

I wouldn't say I am defensive over the music I listen to but its normally I am worried the person I'm with might not like the music.

I used to be that way when I was younger and lacked facial hair, nowadays I get people who often criticize my primary choice in music as being too loud and angry and I usually just say it's not the sort of thing for everyone. I wouldn't say I'm massively defensive about my music, but when I am, it's generally because people are trying to tell me that I'm not listening to the right sort of music. That "argument" really annoys me, since musical taste is purely an opinion-based idea.
It's mainly because of the ignorant pretentious definition they give of the genre you have obviously been listening to for longer than them. "Metal is just a bunch of guys screaming about cutting themselves and their girlfriends" "Hip Hop is just about guns, cars, and bitches" "Reggae music is just the same beat with a slight variation"
They have adequate reason to be pissed, when people not only tell them that their musical taste is garbage, but they then go ahead and incorrectly define it. It's the closed mindedness that gets people defensive.

well the truth is that metal is just "a bunch of guys growling and noise dur-hur" but that doesen't stop anyone from listening to it I do so myself.Death_Korps_Kommissar said:

But I think we get defensive because we grow attatched to our music because we relate to it so in a way we get defensive because to us it almost feels like people are making fun of similar situations we've experienced by making fun of our music..

Yup, Jurassic 5, Atmosphere, and Dilated Peoples are a good place to start. Give those guys a shot. They sure gave me a better appreciation for rap.Radeonx said:

Some people really depend on music for things like getting thru the day and others thats the only thing that they have for fun and is just part of there life so its just important to some people. As for why people get mad for something like saying raps just about bitches, violence, and swearing is just a sterotype like saying all black people eat fried chicken and all irish people do is drink. Like a sterotype some things are true like rap where they just swear, and talk about money like fags like soulja boy and gucci mane while others make songs that are good and actually have messages, and ones not just about killing or drugs although those songs are never really played on radio or on TV because all those retarded songs every hears are what the record companies think will make money. Look up Hip Hop is Dead by Nas which says how rap and hip hop went all shitty
When people make fun of Muse, I just ignore it because Muse is so unique, I understand not many people will like it.
I don't tend to defend my music that much. Probably because I'm on the offensive alot of the time. I've got nothing wrong with people listening to what they like, I just like people to know that Lady GaGa is pure evil...along with several others I shant mention
