Why are we so defensive about our music?

Simply put: "The can with the fewest beans rattles the most."

Anyone who gets in an argument over your opinion of music or whatever is an idiot. You like what you like, I like what I like, nothing will change that, get over it.

If someone gave me a dime everytime I've had to defend him I'd be retired by now.

You know, if you say: "I listen to hip-hop", everyone fucking pauses as if you had your little explanation time to justify your goddamn choice. As if you said you eat babies. That's why I get so defensive about my music. You know, I also dislike the "college-rappers" or "eco-rappers". They're sometimes so stuck up their own asses with messages they bore me. There is a local rapper in GER who always raps about pimping and dealing, but it's so "over the top", ironic and in a form of language which you find only at the royal family's table, that I just adore it.

Music has always held a more important role in an individual's life and in society than something like a favorite color. There's a reason for years the catholic church tried to monopolize music for religious purposes. There's a reason that many societies today still control how people can use music.

Music is a release for people to find balance and meaning in their life. Always has been, still is to this day, and will continue to be in the future. So insulting someone's taste in music is a more personal attack than insulting a favorite movie or color.

OMFG A FELLOW DAVID BOWIE FAN!!!!!!

HEEEYYYYY

I agree with the defending part, everytime I say how I love his music, someone just has to go with 'BUT HE WAS BISEXUAL!!!!!!!' because they couldn't find a better reason to diss him.

Ignoring all the trolling going on in here...

I think we are very defensive of the music we like because music has a lot to do with feelings. I believe most of us like music for how it makes us feel (even if not consciously), so someone attacking something you like to listen to is kind of saying "you shouldn't like to feel like that", which is obviously infuriating.

If it is for no good reason at all or a completely awful reason for disliking it eg. Rap is just people talking about hoes and getting shot or metal is just scream + guitar solo if you make a decent arguement I won't mind at all.

Have you ever noticed how defensive people get about music? If you make fun of someones favorite color or movie or food they'll just say whateverfloats your boat or something like that. Make fun of their favorite music however and they'll launch into a flurry of defensive arguements and reasons for why its so awesome and how you should fall in love with it. Any theories on why this is?
Because people like music that they think reflects them, me personally, I love a nice composition of Mozart or Bach, because I feel that what reflects me, and if they insult my music they hence forth insult me. In my opinion music is the voice of each ones soul and how their inner feeling are expressed and many can feel personally insulted and hence forth defencive about their music.

To me it's just when people i.e. my ex and her friends say that the Jonas Brothers are more skilled than Steve Vai, Satch, even Hendrix.

People use the music as a way to identify themself, and when you insult the music genre people feel insultet (as they use the music, like said, to give them identity)

Agreed. Especially, say, Protest the Hero, or Cannibal Corpse. PtH's music is so complicated that some people would say "ARGAGRAL IT'S JUST NOISE!!", and other's would say CC is too growly and violent.

I'm very passionate about my metal.

Sounds a perfect summary of all metal "music" to me.

Just kidding. But before you read this sentence, were you irritated, right? Or you just thought to yourself "What an asshole". People who find value in music will get upset when it is made fun of because it is something you hold close to your heart, something you look to.

Its for that reason that I dont like certain metal or rap. I dont find value, deep meaning, or passion in screaming, growling, or constant swearing, and all of those turn me off the genre instantly. You can say that im not giving it a chance, but I already have, and to me, I didnt find such things neccesary in order to prove a point or give meaning or solidity to music, so I dislike songs like that.

But everyone is different, and some people can look past that.

don't think i've met anyone who acts like that actually.

i certainly don't do that.

maybe it's to do with the emotions music provokes.
