Why aren't more realistic and serious animated movies being made?

The movie Rango comes to mind. It was certainly made for the Clint Eastwood crowd. The movie itself wasn't terribly good, but it passed on my ranking spectrum.

Also, UP has some adult aspects to it. Ellie dies, Carl and Russle become best friends, The hunter guy shooting at Carl with a rifle, Hunter guy falling to his death, stuff like that.

While I'm not big on anime, I did see one called "Perfect Blue" that was pretty much about a pop start and her stalker who essentially wanted to "become" her. If I recall correctly, it could have easily been a live action movie.

Lionking... Cinderella,,, Beauty and the beast... All the classic animated movies aren't only for kids. They were made for adults to, they just made them in such a way that a kid wouldn't pick some of the things in the movie up. Sides, if you want something like that, go check out all the anime available. There has to be a movie that fits. If nothing else, there's series.

Possible for a kid to watch doesn't mean its not aimed at adults. As for your 4 criteria?

1. Are completely realistic in plot and look,

2. Include swearing where appropriate,

3. Don't sound like a kids' movie when you describe the plot.

4. Aren't comedies.

Number one cant be passed by any move. EVER. Even documentaries fail on this point as you for one, gut out massive amounts of information we need to make it realistic. Not to mention Halo effects and the like.

Number two? Swearing is never appropriate. Even if it is, you have to mind the global market where some words will get you in big trouble.

Number three. Define kid's movie first. No matter what criteria you use you can always abstract any movie to fail this criteria.

Number four. Everything is funny to someone, thus everything is a comedy.

Those are just off the top of my head. They don't all fit all of your criteria, but none of them could be mistaken as, "only for kids." Are we done here?
I'm afraid not, because as you said, none of them fit my criteria.

UP contains a dog speech-translator. Rango, as far as I can gather, is about talking animals wearing clothes. So... yeah.

Pefect Blue is a psychological thriller. Does that suit your criteria?

And I'm just going add this sentence just in case I get slapped with a low content post.

Almost forgot: GI Joe: Resolute.

Watch it. It is how GI Joe live action SHOULD have been.

There http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1185616/ .

Just because you are ignorant of something, doesn't mean something doesn't exists. Sorry if i sound a little offensive, but the way the OP is redacted pissed me off a little.

Also, it's not the only one, not by a long. Sorry to see that you still have a long way in animation.

Edit: Ahh, swearing, looking realistic and stuff... as a parameter of something being for adults... sigh.

As far as I can tell, yes, it does. Thanks! That's three.

Apparently someone has missed out on a massive selection of Anime. So I will just list two titles:

Akira, Ghost In The Shell. That covers your list nicely.

Now if we are talking only American animated movies (where your list holds most of its strength)...hmmmm 9 perhaps?

Yeah, I will go with 9 on that. Psychological, not a kids movie, and not a comedy. However I don't remember any swear words, but I am going to give it a pass considering the characters in the film would lack context really.
I've read Ghost in the Shell and Akira, though I haven't watched the movies. Both of them contain sci-fi elements. Not that realistic, really.

I can think of a few:

Sky Crawlers
Sword of the Stranger
Millennium Actress
Jin Roh
Perfect Blue
Grave of the Fireflies

Though I'm struggling to think of any western animated films that fit this bill...

You want an adult oriented animated film. Akira is one, Princess Mononoke another. The 90's Gundam film. Heavy Metal (still has a story but it's quite smutty). ANd I'd think of more but I need to go write up the grocery list, lol.

Michael, did you just say that anything containing sci-fi elements can't be a serious movie for adults??

P.S. (I think) the whole thread is flamebait.

Well, I edited out the swearing thing, and the look is definitely realistic enough. And it's worse than me being ignorant. I knew about this movie but forgot about it. So that's four movies now.

I love comedies. But not every animated movie should have to be for the laffs. (But hey, watch whatever makes you happy. After all, that's the point of movies.)

Ohh, anime is allowed as "realistic". Then the illusionist and persepolis would be there too.
