Just wondering, I mean sure I know there are less females in other genres of music, such as metal

But I mean female rappers seem to be a very rare thing, at least in the mainstream

is it because the whole culture associated with rap/hip-hop is male dominated? that a female rapper just doesnt sound as good?

any Ideas?

Can't say for sure really. Maybe the rap thing is male dominated and thus detracts females from moving into the space. That said there are some female hip hop artists (Missy Elliot) who are successful so I wouldn't write off their viability completely.

Not a rare thing at all, plenty of female rappers out there. Let me know if you want a list, but it seems like you're just not looking.

Yeah rap is male dominated but then so is rock, metal, jazz, blues, [insert genre here].

I was wondering if this was a similar thing to why there aren't many (particularly recognised) female comedians.

Both rap and comedy is about standing up in front of a lot of people and showing how witty and awesome you are, basically. Which may link in to the male competitive/show off/look better than other males/get attention from females impulse. Whereas biologically, women just need to mill around and look fertile, so they don't have that much of a desire to do the same, or the same drive that makes them good at it.

Maybe? Perhaps?

There are many female rappers. They're just not as many as the dudes.

That being said there are only one female rap Superstar right now, in contrast to there being several males competeting for that spot. That gives the impression that there aren't that many female rappers around.

There's quite a bit of them if you go digging.

Not that many woman want to rhyme aggressively about subjugating women, procuring prostitutes, getting high, and territorial violence, apparently.

I remember when I was watching X Factor with the family, and hearing say how it was 'just wrong' for that girl to be rapping and so angrily to boot. So I'm going to have to say it's some sort of social norm for it to be just men.

Which I don't agree with btw.

Got nothing to contribute to this discussion, but I thought I'd post this;

Skip forward 20 seconds if you want to. Annoying intro.

Good call. In both cases, I would say a good portion of the female comedians and female rappers are lesbians. (Rosie O'Donnell, Ellen DeGeneres, Paula Poundstone [who says that she is asexual, not a lesbian, but whatever] were all stand up comedians. In the rap game, there have been rumors of Queen Latifah and Missy Elliott being lesbians, though they have not necessarily been confirmed.)

Why, it is because women don't swear of course.
LOL

If it weren't for the low content post rule, I would've ended my post with the LOL. Women don't swear? Bwahahaha!

And what does swearing have to do with rap? I swear, the people who are most ignorant about rap are the ones knocking it.

EDIT: Sorry, kind of jumped to conclusions with that last part. -_-

There are loads of female comedians. Probably not as many as there are guys, but still loads.

The same with female fronted bands really.

If you dig for them, you will find tons. They just don't get very successful, which is a shame.

I know of Miss Dynamite, who in her early career was more of a R&B singer, but more recently she's got into rapping.

She is, in fact, a brave soul.

OT: There are tons of them. Most stay underground because 1. What the above image suggest what you'd have to do to become successfull. 2. Rappers come in cliques and the one girl may have people assuming things, albeit, unfairly. 3. A lot of rappers get by on pseudo-ganster images, based on lives most women don't dare to jump into. 4. Too much talk about their vaginas and sex habits that young fans can't relate to and older fans should be too mature for. 5. It's kinda scary for them to just go out and say "I'm a rapper" it's always "I'm a rapper and I'm hot and sexy and want to do you".
