Why buy consoles?

Why would you buy a Honda over a Saturn?
Why would you play one MMO over another?
Why would you buy bananas over apples?

Preference.

Same thing with PC vs. console. The Epeen displays, merit arguments and pissing contests really amount to idiots arguing over personal preference.

If you are a PC gamer, there is no reason to buy a console and vice versa. You will not magically go - Hot damn, why haven't I done this before!? Chances are you will still play the one you prefer and possibly lament the purchase of the other that you dont play and wonder why you wasted the money.

A mediocre trained monkey can change a graphics card. or even build a whole PC i learned it with 10yrs just by reading the manual. Motherboard here, harddrive in that slot, graphics in there, ram in there, put the cables together , Profit.
Just because you know something doesn't mean everyone does, most of the people I know wouldn't know where to start replacing a graphics card I certainly wouldn't, and these people aren't stupid computers just aren't there area of expertise

My wifes PC I got her 7 years ago is still viable today due to lifetime warranty on parts, its been updated to a quad AMD with 2 9600's in SLI for no cost to me when a part fails.
How in the hell did you manage that? 7 years old and some company gave you a new pc when that one died?

Wat. Yes you do?
Only if you don't know anything about computers. It's childsplay to just replace the parts needing replacement.
Childs play for someone like you who has obviously used PCs for gaming since the invention of gaming. Someone like me definitely couldn't go out and buy and install a new graphics card. You might think "Oh, what a retarded console user." but that isn't fair, because I've never done it before. The most you ever have to do with a console is turn it on and download an update.
Replacing a graphics card isn't actually much harder than a simple jigsaw puzzle, especially if you have someone near you who can show you the first time. Other parts are usually equally simple to replace. However, I can't deny that there's a lot you have to bear in mind when replacing parts. It all has to be compatible and THAT can be a pain in the ass. I'm lucky enough to have a massive computer geek as a brother who can show me a thing or two when I don't get it myself.

Well there IS a manual as i said.3 pages with a few images, thats all you need even todays kids should be able to handle that, it takes 2 healthy hands and about 5 seconds of work, pull out old card, put in new card. And if you are unable to do that task with a manual, than you A)can't read, wich i doubt because you can write or B) just dont want to try.
(and with B i mean the word that i avoided to use in this response)

Cause the PC doesnt have Persona.

Also, just cause I like them better. And my PS3 as it sits now is more functional and powerful then a PC, but I've modded the shit out of it.

Mainly because: I prefer controllers
I like the library on consoles
I've never had a PC that didn't meet an early death. I just figure that consoles are more reliable. I've only gotten RRoD'd once, and that was the only problem I ever had with a console.
More of my friends play on consoles rather than PC
Overall I just prefer them. I have the money and I know building a PC isn't that difficult, I just don't really feel like it. I like consoles better.

I have a playstation and a laptop, both are pretty good at playing games on as i dished out for the laptop. the reason i like consoles is simply because i can buy any game for that console and not have to worry about whether the ps3 will be able to play it. they also tend to be more reliable than pc's when it comes to gaming in my experience, less crashes graphics problems etc.

I thinks its B), about half way through reading the manual i'd just be like "Screw this" and go lay my console while lounging on the sofa with some maltesers :S

Register and warranty your parts right away, the CPU died after four years and they gave her the current gen socket proc in the same price range same thing when the video cards crapped out. This is why you always build your own, almost all parts come with lifetime warranties(which are usually 10 years). I have never paid for a broken or burnt part because of this in any PC I have ever owned.

Don't you mean And My PC as it sits now is more functional and powerful than a PS3?

Or when you said "Then a PC" you meant your PC.

I have been gnawing over the idea of going to PC... but I have a Mac and all the things I've heard uttered around the PC players areas with mods and stuff that's out of my league right now seem to say they are twice the hassle.

I grew up with a console. That's the main reason. Got my original Nintendo when I was 8 and it was all mine - Atari, Intelevision, all that was my dad's. That was the only one I got "for free" - my parents weren't blue-ribbon winners let's say - and after that... well when you're saving up Christmas and Birthday money to boost that Babysitting money fund up enough to buy the next new thing a big computer that you KNOW everyone in your house wants and will totally monopolize time away from your games on (this was when homes had either 0 or 1 computers in my income bracket). Choice seemed clear: go Super Nintendo! go Playstation! go Playstation 2!

... and then I was a grown up.

I still didn't have my own computer, being out on my own paying bills I couldn't quite afford one. I finally went back to college and got one (yay! that was such a big day for me), but I already had the PS2 so I never thought to put games on it - it was for school, for the internet, for making a printer work so I could turn in assignments, etc.

I know, I sound old but I'm only 29 for crying out loud!

So when my (now) fiance and I moved in, we both had PS2s, we both used them to play an MMO for some years, and eventually they started to die - incapable of playing anything OTHER than the MMO. I guess those things happen? In any case - it was time to get another gaming device.

I had my computer by then, and I had a laptop too (fancy dancy I know), but I didn't really consider them because they were the workhorses.

We bought a PS3, and we love it. - to be fair, he wanted an Xbox 360... but I persuaded him to stay with Playstation because I just like them better through familiarity.

Now... we're wondering if we should look into the other stuff, PC gaming, an Xbox finally, or another PS3 (we like to play at the same time... sharing is fun but after a few years you just wanna have convenience).

I really don't know what my next gaming system will be or what it will look like, but that's the story of why I've been console all my life.

Oh - we did put Starcraft II on the computer! It was a big discussion too, should it be there, should playtime interfere with regular computer use, ect, but it all worked out just fine.

Controller, game, no building, minimal set up, no installing, cheaper for those who dont know how to make a PC for low cost, no place to put PC.

So you would stop at

"1) Open the Case of the PC
2) locate the graphics card as seen on this Image

3)pull out graphics card
4)put i......."

I really don't know I got my PC 6-7 years ago for ~500$ish and I've upgraded it twice the first update was a better graphics card and the second one was more ram, and it can still run most of the newer games with decent graphics. Maybe it's because PCs seem so hard to use but since I grew up with one and I can look crap up on google I've never had problems with that either, and putting computers together isn't hard either heck during a biology class that was in a classroom with computers I "stole" some ram from a computer and put it in the one I was using because mine was too slow :p Consoles do get some nice games though ( I was pissed when they announced that Red Dead Redemption wasn't going to be on the PC) but other than that I really don't see many advantages

I very much like being able to play games from my comfy couch and on my large, HDTV. I also like being able to play games while my friend lampoons me or watch him play games while making fun of his own variations of incompetence. I also like that my ps3 plays BluRays. I also like not having to muck about with a keyboard when playing my games, or a mouse. The analog sticks have always been more convenient and intuitive to me.

The exclusive titles, ease-of-use, controllers being a better fit for some game types, the comfort of gaming from the couch, and it being significantly cheaper than a gaming PC when you already have a TV to hook it up to.

Not that I could live without having a PC too, but with a console you can run all the AAA titles (well, except RTS's and the few PC exclusives); And thus keep the specs/price down on your PC, compared to if it had to run the latest FPS's at a graphic setting that'll give the same perceivable visual quality from 40 cm away that a console will give you from 2,5 m away.
