I just found out that Michael Bay is going to direct a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, and I couldn't be more frustrated with that. The first Transformers movie was by far the best one, but it had its flaws.

I can't see this being a good thing...perhaps someone can knock me off of the soap box...

You heard wrong. He's not directing it. He's just one of the producers. Jonathan Liebesman is directing (which might be worse, comparing their filmographies).

Honestly, I liked the transformers films and I grew up with the cartoons and toys.

Long and short of it is that his films have made a buttload of money and considering how commercially successful the transformers films have been, it makes sense to attach him to another older franchise.

Dude it's a franchise called Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles it's not like he's remaking The Seventh Seal here.

Yeas it will be shit but if it surprises you that a film about TMNT isn't being given any respect by movie makers then you need to take a long look in the mirror.

The last cartoon movie was done quite well, and I was looking forward to a sequel to that one.

Luckily I have no attachment to either of those franchises so I can be smug and look down at the people complaining that Bay is selling out on their beloved toy commercials, despite the fact I might be in the same position myself if he was doing it to something I actually cared about.

Yeah, with Bay at the helm it's dead in the water. (does combining those two sea imageries work? I dunno...)

It should be noted that he isn't directing it, only producing it, but then again he still seems to have a lot of control of the project, and the leaked script that came out earlier was an absolute disaster and almost killed the project before it got started (shame it survived that)

Oh Well. Never seen Transformers 3, won't go to see this. Vote with your wallets people!

Because cash money, that's why.

Despite being awful the transformers movies made epic tons of cash. Someone looked at this when they saw a script for TMNT and thought, hey, this guy made tons of money on a film about kids toys before, he could do it again!

I do however think you could have a damn good movie if you respected the scource material....keep it grounded, like the 1990 film (my one and only atachtment to the franchise)

Sadly hes not directing it, but it would be the most appropriate choice given the source material as I have stated before.

He's not directing it, he's producing it and this isn't exactly a recent development. That was announced months ago.

Hey, the first TMNT movie was fucking awesome, comparatively speaking. It was gritty and realistic at times, turned Shredder from the joke he was in the cartoon into a legitimate threat (although the film borrows more from the comic than the cartoon), and really established the characters' personalities. Those guys took the time to do it right. The last TMNT movie was given a ton of respect too, but the plot was too weak to carry it to the trilogy they were planning.

This is how bad it was: http://www.geekosystem.com/tmnt-script-leak/

http://io9.com/5938815/michael-bays-leaked-teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-script-is-full-of-bad-ideas

And just in case you think it was fake (which, let's face it, on the internet is more than likely) Bay responded saying it was real, and called it a "first draft"
http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Michael-Bay-Claims-Leaked-Teenage-Mutant-Turtles-Script-Was-First-Draft-32753.html

Also it should be noted that shortly after this the release date was postponed. We don't have any evidence to say that it had to be delayed because they needed to write an entirely new script now their current one was being crucified online but... yeah that's probably the reason.

For what it's worth, it's more likely that the producers look at the success of Transformers (say what you will but they made a lot of money and the first one was pretty decent) and go "Yeah, he'd be perfect to front this 80s nostalgia cash-in we've got lined up. Hire him!" I doubt Bay is deliberately fronting these projects while grinning perevesly at the thought of all the childhoods he's about to rape.

It's just his style of filmmaking makes him good in the eyes of execs for this sort of thing. The people who grew up with it will watch it for nostalgia and the younger generations will watch it for the 'splosions and tits. It's hard to tell which is sadder.

Yeah, everybody gives Bay crap for not being able to direct action well, but Liebesman does everything he does wrong, and makes it ten times shakier.

OT: You're late to the party. Like...really late.

Anyway, he's not directing, as other people have mentioned, but that's not the only thing I want to point out.

What I want to say is something that I've heard many times, and indeed have said to others:

You aren't the target audience. You may have been earlier, but now the studio could not give less of a shit about what you want in your TMNT movie. They're selling this to the type of people who would pay to go to a Michael Bay movie, and looking at the box office standings for Transformers, they're going to get their investment back on it.

Just be glad that you have the old cartoon, and try to block this movie out of your mind until the wave passes over. That's really all you can do, because unless a higher power intervenes, this is inevitably not going to appeal to you, me, or anyone who has an above average taste in film.

You know, Bay gets way more shit than he deserves.
The only really bad movies he's directed were Pearl Harbor and Transformers 2.
Bad Boys, The Rock and the Island were really good. Armageddon and Bad Boys 2, while not as good, were still entertaining.
Many people don't even remember it but the first Transformers movie was actually well received. After that though, Bay directed the 2nd one which was really bad and from that point on, people started to hate on him and everything related to him. A lot of people claim that everything he's done is as bad as Transformers 2 (which is bull shit), often never having seen anything else in his filmography (some haven't even seen that but are still claiming that he's a bad director because the internet says so).
I probably wouldn't like him as a person but that has nothing to do with his movies.

Also SPOILERS!!! he's not directing this one.

I would love to see Bay remake Seventh Seal. I can just see the knight overthrowing the chess board and pulling out dual machineguns on Death.

(and then the chess board explodes)

And the dance of death will be preformed by the Chippendales.
