I just started playing it and I'm having fun with it. I just got to new vegas. I'm going to finish the story and then do side missions. Yeah its the same as fallout 3, but i do like that I can play it without only using vats.

Is that a bad idea?

All the way across the thread!

You just have to go into NV with the right mindset, a more comedic one. There's a lot of funny stuff that happens in the game, some that isn't supposed to even happen. I've played 50 hours so I don't plan on playing again, but it was worth it.

One possible problem about getting killed every time: when you headed out of town startings-ville, did you head straight north, or did you go around? Straight north is an opportunity for pain without a bazillion stimpacks.

hmm, i dont know about the difficulty, but i started immediately with the hardcore on hard mode. yeah i was getting my ass handed to me a zillion of times tho :p but every time i complete a battle it was very worth it. and yeah, travel around, dont stick with the main story too often. it kills the game immersion.

IMO, NV is better than Fallout 3, putting aside some(?) minor(?) glitches and bugs :D
the hardcore mode really gave it to me, i WUV the hardcore mode!

Just to be clear, I love Bethseda games. I've played through Morrowind, Fallout: 3 and Oblivion several times but I just can't seem to get into New Vegas. Why is that? I did almost every single mission, sidequest, and dlc in Fallout 3, and really loved them. I thought Fallout 3 had all the familiarity of Oblivion (mostly the controls, gameplay, and npc interaction) while still being original and unique.

So why is New Vegas different? I've had it for a couple of months and I haven't gotten very far in it. I like the beginning, you know, where you get shot in the head and the game introduces you to new and returning gameplay and you have to protect town-whatever-its-called or not. Also note that I really like they way they play the whole factions like/dislike into the game. Anyway I've only gotten far enough in the game to to exact my vengence on the dick that tried to kill me and Yes Man wants me to go talk to some people or something.

I've only been playing for a couple hours so I'm pretty sure I'm not near the end or anything, I'm only a level 10 too; but the game has sort of lost its luster for me. Is this just me or has anybody else run into this situation themselves?

Edit: Oh yeah and as somebody pointed out -> the difficulty is another thing. I started off on normal, because thats normal, and I was killed by all sorts of things right out of the gate. so I turned it down to very, beary, blue berry easy and I think it was just as hard as normal; everything still fucking kills me. And its not like I'm still a NooB to Fallout: In General either. I know what I'm doing but I'm still getting my shit kicked. But thats not enough to keep me from playing tho, the absence of the general feeling of insertion does that well enough.
The biggest problem with Vegas is the character and weapon designs. They're shit.
I mean ugly. It's not that their poor quality graphically, but by design they're just hideous. Faces for radio. Badly proportioned.
I picked up 2 mods and it fixed the models, brought them to above Fallout 3 quality.
It made a humongous difference.

If you're on console then tough luck.

Other problems are minor and can be traversed around with the difficulty meters and by playing carefully - ie not pissing off major factions until you're actually equipped to take them on.

difficulty : did you try and go north at start? if you don't stay to the road the game wants you to follow (the one benny took), you'll likely run into ridicoulusly powerful enemies, such as the wasps (cazadores) or deathclaws. i couldn't handle more then one cazadore until about lvl 15ish, and as for deathclaws, i simply needed highly powerful or tactical (read: sniper) weapons or it was no fucking dice.

gameplay : Somethings i agree with yahtzee on: its too familiar, it feels like a large expasion pack of fallout 3 really, and also, its buggy as shit. I'm guessing when you give up on this game, it will be because it has frozen 3 times in a row. It will not end there, however, for it will feel like this bug ridden disc has somehow infected your ps3... assuming thats what you played it on.

story : do not do shit for ncr or the legion, they don't give a fuck when you do shit for them, the ncr is always dull and depresing and the legion is always dull and annoying. stick with the house or yes man, i find theyre the only major faction choices that are enjoyalbe.
have you found yourself a sidekick by the way? if not you should meet up with Boone in Novac or Veronica at 188 (world map), the earliest and almost easiest allies you can get. You can have alot of fun just talking to them and doing each ones personal side quests, but when they die they die for good which may be annoying.

Im not really sure what to say mabey your just not into the game. They changed a lot of things from fallout 3 and the game has a very different feel and play style. The only advise I can give you is keep on at it. Start exploring more, doing side quests, companion quests, etc. You will find some really crazy things out in the Mojave.

I think the biggest problem most people have with it is that its not fallout 3 and if you try to play it like it is your going to have problems.

*cough* Fucking Cazadors *cough*
You mean those bugs that go splat with one shotgun shell or sniper bullet?
If you're high level and don't get completely mobbed and have a really good framerate, yeah. Unfortunately, not all of those factors work in your favor. Especially since, in Hardcore mode in particular, there's a bug (it may have been patched) that GUARANTEES that if a companion gets stung by a Cazador, they WILL die.

The wasps? what? how the balls did you snipe that thing!? were you 3 feet away in vats mode or something, cause i sure as hell didn't once land a sneak attack on them with anything short of a grenade launcher. also which shotgun are you using? the early ones don't do 200 damage a pop and even if they did, they had 1 or 2 shells a clip, so how did you deal with the other 3 cazadore that spotted you from several miles away?

I remember that crap. Actually, i tried giving my ally an antivenom and it seemed to work, even though they didn't use it lol. Maybe it just a coincidence and somthing else saved her.

I liked NV more than Fallout 3 in just about every way (I enjoyed Fallout 3 but it never felt like "Fallout").

New Vegas feels more alive, you encounter other random people just trying to survive / exist. From Traders, to roaming squads of one faction or the other... and when I think of fallout 3... I struggle to think of anyone that I encountered one a random basis who wasn't hunting me.

In regards to game play: They fixed aiming. What's not to love?

But reading through the thread with the combat difficulty complaints... unless your immediately going North from the start area, there really shouldn't be an issue that you can't beat after one death.
My first character was on hardcore mode on normal difficulty, and my current character I'm playing is hardcore mode, very hard, with the HUD turned off (well turned down to the point of invisibility) and not using VAT's.... it's difficult, but it's damn far from impossible.

Ok, before you go ahead and do that, once you finish the story that's game over.

I would suggest getting to the point where it gives you a prompt telling you that if you proceed you can't go back, saving there, and then finish the story. Then go back and load that save and explore.

Cazadores were fairly easy.

Cripple their movement (like most things) and then you can pick them off at your leisure.
Also, drugs help.

I liked New Vegas a LOT more because it was more narrative-driven, faction system>morality system, and the difficulty. I felt like an ordinary man. I had to keep on my toes. You could be ambushed and killed at anytime. It drives home the point of a dangerous post-apocalyptic wasteland.
when you say this all i can think about is the land mines. Sweet jesus their is nothing i hated more in that game.

I didn't quite get that feeling of ordinariness when i pulled out a minigun out of nowhere at ceaser's fort and went one man army on his entire legion.

be glad Black Isle (aka Obsidian) didn't follow the original Fallouts so closely that you had a time limit to finish the game and couldn't explore. I definitely had issues getting into the game, mostly because I need that driving force. I don't explore for no reason, or just wander. I need to have a purpose to get me going. Side quests are one thing, but just wandering? It can be pretty boring, and even the main quests don't keep me running very well

I loved it since it was the story-telling return to the first two Fallouts, especially with the Weird Westland perk.

And with so much wonderful mods like Vegas Bounties and such, I have 170 hours played already and still counting. Also with the upcoming HH DLC it can only get better
