Why can't we have both?

Buying both costs more money. Stick with one platform and you'll be able to afford more games.

Sure, there are some genres that only come alive on the PC, like strategy games, and some that are sorely underrepresented on the PC, such as 1v1 brawlers. If you like both those genres then yes, you'll want a PC and a console. But personally I prefer sticking with my PC and having more money to squander on games.

I have both a PC and a console, but I'm curious to know you think this "isn't a legitimate argument". What are you standards for a "legitimate" argument? There's a lot of arguments in favor of each platform, and they're all perfectly "legitimate". Whether or not you find them personally convincing is an individual decision.

What I mean is that there are people who think that saying a PC is stronger or more versatile is enough to discredit people who would prefer to game on consoles, because PCs are 'superior' to consoles.

Sure, the weight of an argument is subjective, but in this day and age is the relative power of a system really a selling point anymore? It's not exactly as though the PC market is inundated with loads of Crysis-type games that would make consoles explode for lack of enough power to run them.

My apologies for poor wording. I felt like being more sarcastic than productive.

Yes because disposable income = piles of cash, apparently. And here I thought my ability to buy some stuff I don't require for sustenance qualified. I've got one laptop that can run what I need it to and I've got it because I need it for Uni, I am truly sorry I can't buy a TV and a console - I bring shame to the gamer race so, I'll go hand in my gamer card right now. And I'll return all the games I have, because you, random person on the internet, showed me the way and how I don't belong in this hobby.

It entirely depends on your situation as a person, and what you priorities your money on. If you don't have a TV then how can i say to you personally you must grab a console now! I'm saying these things to people who have money to be able to buy all these things, and have obviously a TV (or access to a TV), to definitely consider buying a console.

Gaming wherever you like it or not is an expensive hobby, and people who barely scrape by shouldn't really be getting into it. As i said, it could lead to pawning system and games just to scrape by, only to rebuy it and sell it again, in a vicious circle. It would apply to other things such as buying Warhammer figures. I would say it would be more worth buying food if you have to choose between the two mind you.

You spent money on going to Uni, and obviously education is more important to you than a bunch of games. It's obvious that's where you priorities lie, and I respect that in disregard to all of my somewhat pretentious glory.

and yes...please hand me your games, and your Steam Account details in a PM thank you, i'll very much appreciate it, as you have revoked your license as a gamer, and not willing to comply you will be forced to play Action 52 for the rest of your life, strapped to a sofa that has cockroaches. :D

Ah, I understand your meaning now. I'm actually someone who almost enjoyed a decade of having games shackled to aging console requirements. Was easier on my wallet.

For my part I always preferred the TYPES of games on the PC, and always bristled at console exclusives. Didn't stop me from getting one to play hockey games on though.

Yeah, I'm not looking forward to the leap I'll need to take to ensure my PC stays on the curve once the new console gen *****-slaps us. Oh well...

I wish I had grown up with RTS games, because I find it nigh-impossible to get into them now. Only Blizzard's games have really been able to hook me (and I'm the worst Starcraft player on the planet). I guess the same would go for all those old CRPGs. When Baldur's Gate came out, I was playing Final Fantasy VII and Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II. Might be a contributing factor to why I can't enjoy those games today.

I always kinda had a PC and consoles, though it's only been recently that I switched to primarily PC gaming with consoles for the titles I couldn't otherwise get. I'm hoping that the trio of Project Eternity, Torment, and Divinity: Original Sin will be able to foster an interest in isometric CRPGs for me, since none of the Infinity Engine games have been all that enjoyable for me.

If we had both systems easily, and if we had one copy of a game that also works as a copy of the game for the other system -- yeah, there wouldn't be that much rage.

But, pricetags on systems and games you buy being limited to that one system says...

don't think i've ever had a problem... Console for disc in auto-play, simplified controls, and amping up the graphics to Zod-levels without hearing my computer whirr and burn itself to a crisp... PC for modding, haxing, and screwing with the establishment... i am a happy gamer :3

But if I like having a console I'm not a "true" gamer. If I like PC games I'm a douche. So I now I ask all of you, why can't we have both?
Because you would be a fake gaming douche?

You can have both. I do.

But when the battle lines are drawn in the sand, you will have to pick a side. If you aren't with us, you're against us. And if you're against us, you will suffer the same fate as all the others.

Amen brother! Console/pc master race ftw!

Seriously, the straight up bull I hear sometimes that makes me argue in favor of consoles and I come off like a fan boy but really I like both and I get why people use either device. Some people just have no empathy and refuse to believe people should game in an "inferior" manner

I tend to play devil's advocate on both sides whenever these arguments arise. Though I tend to gravitate more towards the side of the PC mostly because I see far more ignorance in people on the side of the consoles. The worst traits of the PC gamers tend to be arrogance, not ignorance.

But I fully agree that having both is the optimal setup for a gamer. There are great benefits offered by both paradigms.

PC has the better service and mods. And consoles have first-party games and accessibility.
If you are tech savvy enough to run a gaming PC, isn't the accessibility of a console made rather redundant for you? The accessibility isn't really a benefit anymore when you have both.

For me personally the only benefit to buying a console would be so I could play exclusive titles. This seems so ridiculous to me, because take away the exclusive titles and there is no way in hell I would pay money for a console when I could have/already have a PC. The exclusive titles aren't traits of their respective consoles either, they are an artificial 'benefit' made up by Microsoft/Sony to lever you into buying their console. Why would I buy from companies who use such heavy handed business practices?

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the idea of a console, I don't hate the Xbox and Playstation lines because they are consoles, but because the way Microsoft/Sony handle their consoles is just backwards and insulting.

Add another ally to your fight in this one, I have the advantages of both and love it.

Because humans truly thrive at two things, Fucking and Fighting, this just gives an outlet on warfare.
You weren't the first person to suggest Why Not Both, and you most certainly won't be the last, so as I see it change to the status quo of FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT isn't really going to change with a single thread.
Admirable as the attempt may be of course.

You haven't reached god status unless you own all platforms but being multiplatform elevates you to demigod status
