I knew nobody who really cared about the Royal Wedding, I think people just watched it because it was the reason we all had a holiday that day and didn't know what else to do with the time.

Also.

She's actually technically a Duchess, not the Princess. Or so Wikipedia would have me believe.
Meh, technicalities, but Prince William is also Duke of Cambridge, so maybe she is both, also Wikipedia says "Catherine's full title and style is Her Royal Highness Princess William Arthur Philip Louis, Duchess of Cambridge, Countess of Strathearn, Baroness Carrickfergus.", which I believe to be excessive, especially Baroness Carrickfergus.

Because it's nice news. News that isn't rape, murder, rioting, political wrangling, famine, disease or a financial crisis.

We got to sit back and watch two people who love each other celebrate that fact. I think it was great.

You figured out why people watch football??!!

Anywho, I don't really know either. Sure, it's nice with a little celebration and two people making a vow to always love one another, but I don't see the huge deal.
What worries me more is the stupidly large amount of cash poured into this kind of thing. Really, you're spending all that money on people who are already rich? Yeah, that's a great idea. I'm sure the people on the street who're starving to death will whole heartedly support money that could go to them sleeping in a proper bed getting spent on flower arrangement and insanely expensive clothes that will only get used once before ending up in a closet or museum gathering dust.

worth absolutely nothing to society,
The royals bring in millions and millions of pounds worth of tourism every year. I did a debate on this in london. I won. The reason we dont get rid of her (which we might, it is rather... medieval) is because shes worth a SHIT TONNE of money. Ever heard a tourist say "ever had tea with the queen?" Turns out these people will pay to see her house. Hows about that. Royally owned land is also worth a shit load of moolah because its made into parks and gardens.

The wedding? No one did care. No one at all. Not sure who youre talking about.

What I found most interesting is that other people around the world thought that we brits actually genuinely cared about it. I know that the media certainly did and a small percentage of the general population did, but for the most part the attitude was a resounding one of 'Yeah we're happy for 'em and all, but hey, look, extra day off!' Certainly most of the people I know and if they actually did celebrate it or do anything for it, it was mainly out of a vague sense of it was what we were supposed to do/it's as good an excuse for a party as any.

My coworkers were hurrying back to the tv to watch the ceremony during breaks and chattering away about it. I felt like the odd one out being the only girl to think 'what's the point?' It looked so boring and it is beyond pointless. Though I do find history royal politics to be fascinating but nowadays celebrity worship seems like nonsense. On the other hand, I watched Day9's starcraft 2 daily during my break and I'm sure most people don't understand my interest in that.

Because people are pathetic and their lives are so depressing and boring compared to what they wished for so they spend their time checking out celebrities and royalty.

Because they're symbolic to the British people. They are unmoved by changing politics, they're a constant presence in our country no matter how good or how bad life gets. They're a huge part of British history and a Royal Wedding is a happy event that resonates throughout the country at a time when a lot of people are struggling. Even if you didn't support it, you still probably had a lovely day off.

As someone who is currently setting up her business with huge help from The Princes Trust, I resent you saying that the Royal family are worth nothing to society. Go and look up how many charities they patron; and whilst you're at it, go and look at the figures for London tourism and tell me that they don't contribute to our economy.

Because people need something to distract them from the boring dull tedium of their own lives.
Or maybe people just wanted to remember princess Diana, you know hoping to see a real life Fairy Tale. Maybe they should have made a mechanized dragon for the event.

...Can you explain it to me? Because I was never able to get it and it's very annoying when my family screams and I run down asking what's wrong and they just tell me someone scored. Ugh.
well, i think that it's about unity, large groups of people agreeing that they want a certain team to score more goals than the other team and then being happy when they discover that they were right, i still think it's stupid but i think that's why people like it

i'm not great at understanding people, not at all, it took me the best part of 10 years to figure out why people watched football, but i was just thinking about the royal wedding and i've drawn up a blank, i mean why would anyone, much less hundreds of thousands of people give up their day off to watch two people, worth absolutely nothing to society, kiss on a balcony? i mean seriously, WHY?!

edit: for cryin' out loud people! can we maybe stop insulting my reaction times?! i just said i was just thinking about it, i didn't say i'd been planning this thread for the past 3 months!
I don't know whether or not your British, but if your not, here is the reason: Most British people care about their national history and respect their culture enough to give up 10 minutes of their day to witness a momentous moment in British history. Even those who didn't care much about the royals still took part because it was a celebration, where people could be happy and have a good time, while were in the middle of some dark times.

Also, really?
Someone who plays video games can't understand why people enjoy football. its one thing not to like it, but not to understand why its fun o_O
momentus? really?! i dare you to name a single indirect effect the royal wedding will have on our nation and its future, the royal family are a bunch of rich prats sitting in a cosy palace all day, they don't run the country, they don't help! they don't do ANYTHING! yes, if we get a day off there's nothing wrong with having a party, but to pretend we're partying on behalf of some snob we've never met's wedding is just plain wrong

and yes, video gaming and football and extreemly different, video gaming is intense and fun, it lifts you to new and more exciting worlds, in which you can be whoever and whatever you choose (god i sound corny), football provides none of these things, it's just a bunch of pansies running around on a field shouting and kicking a ball around
