Around my 18th. When I was nervous for something, I never showed. But it gave me hellish pains in my belly afterwards sometimes, just lighting one up, took the pain away.

For some reason, it always calmed me in periods of stress, though I'm not very consistent in my smoking ways, it just depends on the time, location and funds.

Honestly...I smoked for about a week in college, and my reason was "to see what the big deal was".

Made me physically ill, so I stopped.
Exactly what happened to me - except earlier
My body rejects drugs, which is a good thing

yeah i never started up smoking i tried it once or twice back in the day and didn't understand the appeal. i've never had friends who have tried to pressure me into smoking...more specifcally i would never keep friends that did so really i can't think of a good reason for people to start smoking.

i dont, it just doesn't have any pro's i care about, too many cons, such as the expense, eventually really bad for you, and the addiction that alot of people have, its just not needed to me

I don't smoke. I just want to live for as long as possible. I don't care if people do though, and their reasons for smoking are no big deal either. If it helps them relax, that's okay with me.

Don't smoke. Never even tried, not even when drunk. Morally superior ain't I? *Titter*

My brother does. He was 14 when he started - now he's 15 - and it's definitely because of his friends, who are all probably going to jail (not because they smoke, for other things, smoking is just one of the things they do).

Now if you want to know why I started drinking, it was initially to alleviate some girlfriend blues (I'd been dumped recently). It works at a certain level of drunkness, just not when you slide too far over the threshold, if you get my meaning, otherwise you can become a wreck in a few seconds (and that ain't good when the girl in question is in the room - that was an amusing night in hindsight). Then I liked the feeling of being drunk, and began to get accustomed to the taste. I'm a social drinker now (usually spend about 3 or 4 months without a drop, since it doesn't particularly bother me), and I think I'll stick to that. I'm unlikely to regress to a state of nothing, or progress to all sorts of narcotics (interesting usage of regress/progress there).

The whole 'I am stressed, and this will make it seem very interesting and intellectual' situation.
I've tried to kick the habit a few times since, with varying degrees of success. I'm hoping college will finally get the job done, what with the lack of requisite funds.

I don't smoke cigarettes.

They're just something I don't want to be involved with. I'm not against the baccy; nor am I for it; I just don't wanna try it.

On the other hand; I have been known to indulge in a nice evening with a loaded bong and some Spongebob.

God, Spongebob is SO much better when you're high.

I first started smoking during finals of my first semester at college. Then I quit about four months later. Then I started back up after my girlfriend died, and I'm in the process of quitting again... it's rough. I really just want to get down to about a pack every few weeks, that way I can still indulge every now and then, but not make a habit out of it (if that makes any sense).

I initially tried it because I was curious. My brother and I bought a pack and smoked one each. I enjoyed the relaxing feeling of the deep breathing with the Nicotine buzz that came with it. Soon after that I realized that after a meal having a smoke was excellent!

My habit turned into heavy smoking for like 5 years and now I just smoke when I'm drunk becaseu it just goes so well with it. A pack lasts me about two to three weeks now rather than a pack and a half a day at my heaviest.

I find cigarettes to have a smell that makes me sick, not with cigars though. Cigars have something about them that I find appealing, it might be the fact that they are hand made in Cuba and all natural (my dad smokes Cubans).
I hear that. Few years back I tried a real cigar and rather enjoyed it. I still buy one from time to time but they take me ages to smoke. The difference between a gross ass cigarette and a real, hand made cigar is so vast as it might as well be a different thing altogether.

Ugh, I can't stand cigarettes. Don't even like to be around them. You can enjoy a nice cigar though.

I started smoking because my girlfriend did.

I stopped 3.8 seconds later.

We broke up 3 minutes later.

I never smoked anything, nor have I ever used drugs or alcohol.
I always wonder why people start with that kind of stuff.
Really you wonder why people do stuff like that? you can't put two and two together and realize that maybe those things make them feel good? I dont have a problem with people not doing drugs or alcohol but its this kind of attitude that always rubs me the wrong way.
