I am a Reel Big Fish fan. One of their songs is entitled "Why Do All Girls Think They're Fat?" and honestly, it really got me thinking. Not being a girl, I started thinking, "Why do all girls think they're fat?"

I am in high school, so I'm not sure how it is in the real world, but almost every girl I know thinks that they're fat. Most of the time, they're not fat at all and they're just saying that. I was also reading that teenage females have the lowest self confidence and the highest percent of people with anorexia are teenage females.

My question is why are teenage girls like that? I want serious discussion here, not "Because you touch yourself at night."

I really think that it's the media. Constantly being shown touched up pictures of models can make people start comparing themselves to other people and are always looking for the negatives. What do you think?

"All" girls?

Sounds to me like you are just being sexist, applying such a shallow stereotype to all girls is just wrong.

Because that's what those magazines featuring anorexics tell them what to think.

It's wrong morally, but i'm pretty sure if someone is talking about 95% of a certain people, it's acceptable to push those 5% aside, don't you think?

Because slightly more than half of all the women in the world are, and voice their disgruntlement aloud, and the the other less-than-half want to fit in, because the fat ones might eat them otherwise.

Because they want to think they are. Because if they say they're good looking people will call em arrogant and bitchy/slutty

Well, you know what I meant. I've only met one genuinely confident girl in my life.

Because people are shallow and strive to meet those shallow expectations in hopes only to realize that a relationship with a shallow person is doomed to fail from the beginning?

Or something like that.

I don't know, probably because the media has this whole "Perfect Woman" thing and if they don't fit the profile (and let's be serious, NO ONE DOES) they get depressed and think they aren't pretty. However it is worth remembering that the media is one step below Larry the Cable Guy on my list of things to be taken seriously, so I don't listen to them. And the girls I hang around with are fine the way they are.

Some of them want attention on themselves and will get it at any cost, some want reassurance that they're [i/]not[/i] fat, others truly think they are fat because they maybe 2 lbs. over Kate Moss' weight.

Pick your favorite.

I'm not a girl, nor do I think I hate, but I'd say that they see the extremely thin girls on the Internet/television, and they probably are not as thin as them.

No it really is majorly affected by the media 3.141592654, they don't cater to peoples image of beauty, they created it. If a certain type of image wasn't focused on and then spammed all over the pages, walls, screens, and thoughts of all of existence, people would have only their own taste to believe in. Major media portrays an image of beauty mainly as a stereotype, falling into only a few categories. Overly skinny runway models, who diet with crackers and water, movie stars who can afford to be fit (like we should actually strive to be), movie stars who fake being fit by actually being unhealthy (the method most often chosen by lazy society attempting to imitate said stars), and then the fake implanted top heavy/bottom heavy women, who make their waist seem smaller.

Young girls, especially highschool students are extremely worried about their own image because of the changes they go through. They are unsure of themselves, and if they are good looking/attractive.

If they say they are fat they either believe in the portrayed image of beauty in the media, their parents are negative, neglectful, and aren't encouraging, or they are fishing for compliments.

Tell them they aren't fat. Tell them they are beautiful. They'll appreciate it.

Because they see all of these models, and are held up to those impossible standards. But, that's not the sole cause, just a major one. Throughout history, people have always felt bad about themselves and wanted to look better than they do, it's human nature, and these magazines take people's already high standards and raise them further. Not only that, but these magazines demean women who don't fit the perfect standard and make the readers feel bad about themselves. Just look at the cover of one of them in the store, and it's likely you'll see a story about "Looks like (Insert Celebrity) is getting fat!" even when the girl has average-skinny weight, and looks beautiful regardless. I'm going off on a bit of a tangent here, so I think I'll let Dave Chapelle explain the rest:

so it's a better alternative for people to think their poeple who like to ***** about stuff that isn't important?

one day, one of my friends caught me on a bad day and went up to me complaining about how fat they are, after about an hour of saying 'you're not fat' and them saying I was wrong i finally blurted out "OK, YOUR FAT, YOU'RE THE FATTEST GODDAM PERSON I'VE SEEN IN 5 YEARS, SO PUT THE CAKE DOWN FATTY" she ran to the washroom and cried for half an hour, I'm not sure why though, she was the one who insisted that she was fat, i just agreed after an hour of disagreeing... does this make me a bad person?

I agree billy, those 5% can have their cake and eat it to. More power to them but they're like Female D&D players... exist... but fluke. I have a lot of female friends and i can't think of one who doesn't occasionally ask if they look fat.
